4 "I am pregnant."

“Are you alright?” Carrie nodded to Stephanie as she brought the files for her to check. She reached for them and placed them on her desk. She took a deep breath as another bout of nausea bubbled through her. Since she arrived at work she vomited twice. She didn’t think she could do it again. Her stomach was empty and she was hungry. But she didn’t think she could eat either. She opened the files, and blinked as saliva pooled in her mouth. She hummed, forcing her body to cooperate with her.  She refused to give attention to what was happening to her. She didn’t even want to think about it. She was determined to get through work, and get back to her normal life. She wiped her face and concentrated on the file she had opened on her desk. Stephanie walked back into her office and placed a cup of tea on the table. She lingered at her desk as she waited for her to raise her head. Carrie looked up, and stared at her. Stephanie gave her a warm smile. She was one of the nicest humans at the firm. And Carrie liked her. She met her share of humans in her life. While most supernatural beings went to supernatural schools like Benford Academy, she went to human schools because she didn’t have parents who could pay her way through a supernatural school. And to make it worse, she wasn’t one of those special werewolves who have gifts like Mikaela or werewolves who have strong wolves like Marcus, who were destined to be great. Her wolf was average, and without parents to bring her up, she had to fight for her place in the pack, which was still at the bottom. Carrie realised pretty early that she had to make her own way in the world. She couldn’t rely on pack life like other wolves did. As an orphan her pack tolerated her. And she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life fighting for scraps. And so she went to school, and made her own way in the world. She made sure that she was independent, and could survive on her own in the world. Though that was not what she wanted. She wanted to have someone in her life, that’s why she stayed in the pack, even though her parents were not there. They were with her somehow.  “It’s chamomile tea,” she whispered looking behind her at the door. “It will help with the nausea. I couldn’t help but overhear you in the bathroom.” Shit. She tried to make as little noise as possible. She didn’t want anyone in her business. But she couldn’t control her body when everything inside her was going crazy.  “Are you really alright?” she asked again. “I’m fine. Thank you,” she said picking up the cup of tea. Stephanie gave her one last look and then walked out of her office. She scrunched her face as the scent of the tea filled her nose. So far every scent that she breathed intensified the nausea. She wasn’t sure how she was going to react to the tea. But the scent wasn’t so bad. She sipped a little of the tea, and sighed as her hot liquid filled her mouth. She drank some more as it seemed to do the trick. Her stomach settled and she could breathe easy again. She made a note to buy the tea before she went home. She went back to work, catching up on the financial data accrued while she was away. She thanked God that she had Stephanie as her PA. She compiled the files neatly and captured every transaction the company made. Carrie worked as the company’s accountant. Although she didn’t miss much. She hated the fact that she wasn’t at work. Her job was the most important thing in her life. For her it represented her independence. Without it she knew she will be a lowly female, who didn’t really bring much to her pack. Orphans were a liability to a pack. Even though, she didn’t rely on the other members of her pack for anything, most of them felt the burden of having her around. Alpha Fin was supportive, but he didn’t really give her the attention that she craved. No one could. Only her parents could give her that. To this day Carrie missed them so much. A gloomy feeling settled on her, and Carrie shook it away. She went back to work. She skipped lunch not wanting to upset her stomach again. She worked until it was time to go home. She finished off her work, and then stood up to go home. A dizzy spell hit her as she reached for her hand bag. God, not again, she thought as she took deep breaths. She stood there breathing until the feeling went away. She steadily walked out of her office. “See you tomorrow, Carrie,” Stephanie said. Carrie waved to her as she made her way to the elevators. She got in, and pressed the ground floor. She leaned against the cool metal, praying that her body will hold off until she reached home. She hated that this was happening to her. She shook her head, closing her eyes. God, no…. please…this can’t be happening. She begged. She placed her hand to her tummy. She bit into her bottom lip, begging harder. She didn’t want this. She sniffed, feeling tears fill her eyes. Please, don’t let this happen. If she didn’t acknowledge it then it won’t be real, she said to herself over and over. The elevator doors opened in the underground parking lot. Carrie walked to her car. She pulled out her keys from her handbag and unlocked the car. She got into the car, started it, and then drove off heading home. She realised as she parked in front of her cabin that she forgot to buy the chamomile tea. She knew she didn’t have any in her cabin. She groaned as she got out of the car. Her dizziness returned with a vengeance. She walked to the door, and opened it, since she left Mystic standing there. She didn’t get the chance to lock it. She walked into the cabin. But her eyes rolled to the back of her head, as she took a step to her bed. She whimpered as her legs felt like jelly beneath her. She dropped to the floor with a thud. Carrie looked around her cabin as the world turned dark. She woke up a few… Carrie wasn’t sure what time it was. But it was already dark. She looked through her window at the darkness outside.   Carrie looked down at herself, surprised that she was lying on a bed.   “She awake,” a familiar mean voice said. Carrie turned to find Haile staring at her with her arms folded to her chest. Her long black hair covered half of her face as she leaned down to sniff around her. She straightened, looking at her weirdly. “The next time you fall. Make sure to close the door. So we don’t see you. No one wants to see that. It’s weak.” “What?” Carrie asked weakly. She tried to pull herself to a sitting position but her body was just too drained. Haile shook her head. “You really are pitiful.” “Haile, stop being mean to her. She been through a lot,” Mystic said coming into view. “Who picked her up from the floor. If I was being mean, I would have left her there and not called you over,” Haile said. She dropped down in her chair. And gave her a mean look. Carrie stared at her. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. She understood that she was an alpha and all but it didn’t give her a right to be mean to her. “Here drink this. You are so pale,” Mystic said giving a cup of something. “Did you eat at all?” she asked staring down at her. Carrie didn’t answer her. She brought the cup to her lips. The liquid was warm and sweet. It tasted delicious. “Thank you,” she said. “You can thank me by taking care of yourself,” Mystic said. She sat on the bed. “What is going on with you?” she asked. Carrie looked at Haile. Haile stared at her, her eyes hard and piercing. “Don’t mind me. I don’t really care what happened to you.” Mystic growled. She turned to Haile. “You do know that she was in that lab, because of you being a brat right. Show some respect.” Haile turned her hard eyes on Mystic. Mystic’s growl deepened. And she challenged Haile. “Whatever,” Haile said and walked out of the cabin. Mystic walked to the door and closed it. “God. I can’t stand her,” she said walking back to the bed. She focused her eyes on Carrie. “Are you going to tell me what happened. Or should I call Sky. She seems to make you talk.” “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it. I guess I am still tired from everything that happened,” Carrie said. She got out of bed, and walked to the bathroom. She closed the door, and leaned over it. She sighed. She walked to the basin and stopped shot as she found a pregnancy test there. She turned to the door. “It’s for you. I bought it this morning. You need to know Carrie. I don’t know what happened between you and your mate. But it would be better if you knew, so that you can take care of yourself and the baby.” Mystic said through the door. “I think he would want you to.” Carrie closed her eyes as her last words slammed into her. Mystic thought that he was her mate. Carrie bit into the inside of her mouth. He wasn’t her mate, she thought as she opened her eyes and stared at the pregnancy test. She didn’t need it because she already knew. She was pregnant with his baby. And she didn’t even know his name. Carrie walked to the toilet and sat down. She stared into space as the memories of that night in that room flooded her mind. A tear rolled down her cheek as she remembered what she had done. She had no one to blame but herself. “You are mine.”    The words echoed in her mind as if he was saying them to her all over again. She clenched her jaw wishing she had chosen differently. She should have been brave and faced her fate by herself, and not tricked an alpha into mating with her. Now, she was having his baby. What was she going to do? Carrie asked herself. She was going to be the laughing stalk of the whole pack. She couldn’t make Marcus mate her as his Luna. Now, she was having a baby all by herself. Haile was right. She really was pitiful. “What does it say?” Mystic banged on the door. “Put me out of my misery. I’ve been waiting all day.” Carrie didn’t respond. “Carrie, come on. I know you miss him. You should look on the bright side. At least you have a part of him with you. It’s more than we can say for most females.” Carrie slapped a hand to her mouth as a sop ripped out of her mouth. Mystic’s words punched her in the chest. She felt her heart break to a million pieces. What she was describing was something she’s longed for all her life – to have something, to miss a mate, to have a family. But that wasn’t what this was. She shook her head. She was definitely being punished for this.   “Carrie?” Mystic called her name impatiently.    “Okay. Give me a minute,” she said. She stared at the pregnancy test. And then walked to the basin. She opened it, as she walked back to the toilet. She opened the lid, and pulled her pants and underwear down. She peed on the stick. She waited for the stipulated time. She held her breath as she waited for the two lines to appear. The lines appeared. Right, Carrie thought. She cleaned herself and got dressed. She walked out of the bathroom, and gave Mystic the stick. “I am pregnant,” she said. Mystic pulled her into a hug. “You’re going to be fine,” she said. She pulled back and smiled. “Let’s go find something to eat. I am starving.” Carrie nodded, even though she didn’t feel hungry at all.
