CHAPTER 27Bannister’s flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles lifted off at 1:35 p.m. Scheduled arrival was 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. Bannister wished he knew what Madison was thinking right now. Her mother was all she had. Madison was aware it was only a matter of time, but that time had come. Bannister guessed it would be normal to feel sorry for oneself. Sorry that your mother would not see you graduate, would not be there to help you plan your wedding, would never see her grandchildren, and would never pick up the phone again to answer a simple question. Maybe they had time to talk about some of that stuff. He’d try and get a sense of where Madison’s head was when he saw her later. He’d suggest picking her up at her apartment, driving over to Santa Monica, and then walking along the beach.
