Chapter Eleven: The Truth Between Us

314 Words
The moment the doors closed behind them, the silence became unbearable. “You let him touch you.” His voice was low. Controlled. But beneath it— Anger. Li Yue pulled her wrist free. “It was a dance.” “It was a message.” She turned to face him. “And what message is that?” “That you’re willing to play both sides.” The accusation hung between them. Sharp. Unfair. Her chest tightened. “You think I’m working against you?” “I think,” he said slowly, “you’re hiding something.” Silence. Because he wasn’t wrong. And that was the problem. “Everyone in this palace hides something,” she replied. “Not from me.” His gaze locked onto hers. Intense. Demanding. “Then maybe,” she said quietly, “you’re not as in control as you think.” That hit. She saw it. Felt it. The shift. He stepped closer. “You went to the western wing.” Not a question. “Yes.” “You listened.” “Yes.” “And you didn’t come to me.” That was the one that mattered. Li Yue hesitated. Because the truth— Would change everything. “I didn’t know if I could trust you,” she admitted softly. The words landed harder than anything else she could have said. His expression didn’t change. But something behind it did. Something closed. “Then you’ve already made your choice,” he said quietly. Her heart dropped. “That’s not what I—” “Be careful, Li Yue.” His voice wasn’t angry anymore. That was worse. “Because the next time you stand between me and a threat…” He stepped closer— “…I won’t hesitate.” Silence fell. Cold. Final. And for the first time— She wasn’t sure where she stood with him anymore.
