Lies And Secrets

Annie's words hung in the air like a challenge, daring Joshua to deny the truth. "I know," Joshua said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.I know that I'm married, and that I have obligations to Jane. But Annie, I swear to you - my marriage is a sham. Jane and I, we're just going through the motions. We haven't been happy for years." Annie's expression didn't change, but Joshua could see the skepticism in her eyes. "That's not true," she said, her voice firm. "You and Jane, you're a power couple. Everyone knows that. You're married to Janes family's money and influence, and you'll do whatever it takes to keep it." Joshua felt a surge of anger at Annie's words, but he knew she was right. He was trapped in a loveless marriage, tied to Jane by threads of duty and obligation. But he couldn't bear the thought of losing Annie, not now that he'd finally found her again. "Annie, please," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "Don't give up on me." I'll do whatever it takes to make this right, to make us work. Just don't leave me." Annie's eyes searched his face, as if looking for something - a glimmer of hope, perhaps, or a sign that Joshua was truly committed to their love. But as she looked at him, Joshua could see the doubt in her eyes, the fear that he would never be able to truly be hers. Just then, Joshua heard the doorbell ring. It was Jane, his wife. Joshua's eyes locked onto Annie's, a spark of panic igniting between them. What was Jane doing at home at that time? She was supposed to be at the charity meeting. And how would she react if she found Annie here, in their house? Joshua and Annie hurriedly tidied up the living room, so Jane wouldn't suspect anything. Joshua's eyes darted to the door, his mind racing with a plan to deflect Jane's suspicions. He forced a smile onto his face, trying to appear nonchalant. "Ah, Jane, perfect timing," he said, standing up from his sofa. This is Annie, the journalist I'm working on a business article with. Remember the article I told you about? Annie here is helping me put together a piece on our company's latest developments. Jane's eyes narrowed, her gaze flicking at Annie and then back to Joshua, who was busy lying. She knew Annie, of course - who didn't? Annie was a renowned journalist in town, known for her incisive reporting and sharp wit. "Annie," Jane said, her voice cool and detached. "I didn't know you were working with my husband on a story." Annie's expression was neutral, but Joshua could sense a hint of wariness behind her eyes. "Yes, well, it's a big piece," she said, her voice smooth. "We're just putting the finishing touches on it." Jane's eyes lingered on Annie's face, and Joshua could tell she wasn't buying it. If Annie was working on a story with Joshua, she would have been assigned a team of researchers and assistants, not working one-on-one with the chief executive officer at his house. And Annie wouldn't come to their home to discuss the article - that wasn't how she worked. "I see," Jane said, her voice dripping with skepticism. Well, I didn't mean to interrupt. I just needed to discuss some...matters of urgency with you, Joshua. That was why I came home early. Joshua's heart sank, sensing that Jane was onto him. He knew he had to think fast, to come up with a convincing explanation for Annie's presence in their house. But for now, he just smiled and nodded, trying to appear calm and composed. "Of course, Jane," he said. Annie, thank you for coming in today. I'll be in touch soon. Joshua said to Annie, stylishly signaling her to go. Annie nodded, her eyes flashing with a hint of amusement. She knew Joshua was lying, and she knew Jane wasn't buying it. But for now, she just smiled and turned to leave, leaving Joshua to deal with the fallout. Jane sat on the sofa with her legs crossed, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "I got a call from my father when I was out at the charity meeting," she said, her voice light and casual. Joshua looked at Jane, with a questioning expression on his face. "Oh? What did he say?" Jane's smile grew wider. He's invited us to dinner at the estate tonight. He wanted to discuss some... business matters with us and this new finance guy he found. It is just a small dinner with some friends, family and business associates. There is nothing to worry about josh. Jane persuaded him. Joshua's expression changed, a flicker of unease crossing his face. "Tonight?" he repeated, his voice a little too casual. Jane nodded, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Yes, tonight. He's expecting us at 7 pm. And he's made it clear that he wants us both to be there." Joshua's eyes dropped back to the design on the sitting room wall, his face a mask of calm. But Jane could sense the tension in his body, the hint of reluctance in his voice. "I'll make sure to clear my schedule tonight," he said, his voice smooth. Just as Joshua sat back on the sofa, staring blankly at his watch, his mind began to wander back to the countless dinner parties he had endured at Jane's family estate. He couldn't help but feel a knot of anxiety forming in his stomach at the thought of facing Jane's parents again. They had never made it a secret that they disapproved of him, that they thought he was beneath their daughter. They had always looked down on him, treating him with a condescending disdain that made Joshua's skin crawl. It didn't matter that he had built a successful company from scratch, that he had worked tirelessly to provide for Jane and his family. In their eyes, he would always be the poor boy who had somehow managed to snag their daughter. Jane had always defended him, of course. She had always stood up to her parents, refusing to let them disrespect her husband. But it wasn't enough. The constant belittling, the snide comments and condescending smiles, had all taken their toll on Joshua. He always tried to brush it off, to pretend that it didn't bother him. But deep down, it had eaten away at his self-esteem, at his sense of worth. And it had contributed to the slow death of his love for Jane. He couldn't help but compare the way Jane's parents treated him to the way Annie made him feel. Annie, with her sparkling eyes and her bright smile, had a way of making him feel seen, of making him feel like he was worth something. Joshua was lost in thought. He couldn't help but wonder what the future held. Would he be able to find a way to reconcile his feelings for Jane with his growing desire for Annie? Or would he be forced to make a choice, to decide which path to follow? He was still wandering in his thoughts, when Jane patted him on his shoulder. Jane's eyes narrowed slightly, as if she could sense the tension in his body. "Don't worry too much about it, the dinner will go well just fine," she said, her voice light. Joshua nodded, his eyes avoiding hers. As Jane turned to go upstairs, Joshua's eyes followed her, his gaze lingering on the back of her head. He felt a pang of frustration, a surge of annoyance at the prospect of facing Jane's parents again. He walked over to the window, staring out at the city below. He could feel his anger and resentment simmering just below the surface, waiting to boil over.
