The Dinner Party

1183 Words
The evening sun cast a golden glow over the city as Joshua stood at the window, his eyes fixed on the distant skyscrapers. He could hear Jane calling out to him from downstairs," ain't you ready yet ? "Let's go," the soft sound of her voice calling out to him. A reminder that it was time to put on a show. He took a deep breath, smoothing out his tie as he turned to face the door. Jane walked in, a vision in red, her dress hugging her curves in all the right places. She smiled, her eyes sparkling, and Joshua felt a pang of guilt for not being able to muster up more enthusiasm. "Ready?" she asked, her voice bright. Joshua nodded, forcing a smile onto his face. "Let's do this." The drive to Jane's family estate was a short one, the silence between them punctuated only by the sound of the engine and the occasional passing car. Joshua's mind wandered, his thoughts drifting back to Annie and the way she made him feel. As they pulled up to the estate, Joshua's anxiety spiked. He could see the lights of the house, the sound of laughter and music drifting out into the night air. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the evening ahead. Jane's parents greeted them at the door, their faces smiling but their eyes cold. Joshua's gut twisted with annoyance, but he pasted on a smile and played the part of the dutiful son-in-law. As they made their way into the dining room, Joshua's eyes scanned the table, taking in the familiar faces of some business partners and friends. He spotted Annie's name on the guest list, his heart skipping a beat. Why was Annie invited? As the evening wore on, the conversation flowed like wine as they made small talk and laughed and joked. But Joshua's mind was elsewhere, his thoughts consumed by the woman who had captured his heart and why she was invited to the party. Jane's parents had invited Annie. She was to come view the dinner and write some articles on it, giving their company more publicity. The dinner was filled with top business people and associates. She hadn't had time to tell Joshua because the invite came late. It was after she left Joshua's house. As they sat down for dinner, Joshua's eyes scanned the table, searching for a familiar face. That's when he saw her - Annie, sitting across from him, her eyes locked on his. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the noise of the dinner party fading into the background. Then, Annie looked away, her cheeks flushing slightly. Jane, oblivious to the tension, launched into a story about her latest charity event. Joshua tried to focus, but his eyes kept drifting back to Annie. As the main course was served, Joshua's phone buzzed under the table. He discreetly pulled it out, his heart racing as he saw a message from Annie. She was telling him sorry for not alerting him earlier that she was going to be at dinner. He quickly silenced the phone, trying not to draw attention to himself. But Jane noticed, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Everything okay?" she asked, her voice low. Joshua nodded, trying to play it cool. "Yeah, just a work thing." Just then, the doorbell rang, and the sound of laughter and chatter filled the room. Joshua's eyes flicked to the entrance, and his heart skipped a beat as he saw a tall, dark-haired man walk in. It was Alex, Annie's ex-fiancee. Annie's eyes locked on the man, and her expression changed in an instant. She looked... uneasy. "Ah, Alex, right on time," Jane's father said, standing up to greet the man. I'm glad you could make it tonight. I wanted you to meet my son-in-law, Joshua, and some of our other business partners. Joshua's eyes narrowed as he stood up to shake Alex's hand. There was something about the man that didn't sit right with him. "Alex will be overseeing my share of the company from now on," Jane's father explained, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I'm sure you two will be working closely together soon." Joshua's eyes flicked at Annie, who was watching the exchange with a mixture of interest and wariness. He wondered what her relationship was with Alex, and why she seemed so uneasy around him. As the dinner party continued, Joshua couldn't help but notice the way Annie's eyes sparkled whenever Alex spoke. She seemed... drawn to him, like she was being pulled back into a familiar orbit. Joshua's curiosity got the better of him, and he found himself trying to catch Annie's eye, to see if he could get a better read on her emotions. But every time he looked at her, she seemed to be gazing at Alex with a soft, wistful expression. Alex stood up to refill his glass. As he walked behind Annie's chair, he reached out and lightly touched her shoulder. Annie's reaction was immediate. She turned to him, her eyes locking onto his, and for a moment, Joshua thought he saw a flash of something more than friendship between them. "Thanks, Alex," she said, her voice low and husky. Joshua's eyes narrowed. What was going on here? He never knew Annie and Alex were once engaged. They dated a while back and were engaged, but Annie had to break off the engagement. As Alex returned to his seat, Joshua caught Annie's eye, trying to convey his question without words. But before she could respond, Jane's father stood up, his glass raised. "To new beginnings," he said, his eyes shining with excitement. "And to the future of our company." The room fell silent, everyone's eyes on Jane's father. But Joshua's gaze was fixed on Annie, who was smiling at Alex with a look of warmth and familiarity. The dinner party drew to a close. Joshua felt a sense of relief wash over him. He had managed to make it through the evening without any major awkwardness. But as they all stood up from the table, Alex turned to Annie and said, "Can I give you a ride home? It's on my way." Annie smiled and nodded, gathering her purse and coat. "Thanks, Alex. That would be great." Joshua felt a surge of fury and jealousy at the same time. Why was Alex offering Annie a ride home? And why was she accepting? He tried to push the feelings aside, telling himself he was being ridiculous. But as he watched Annie and Alex walk out of the dining room together, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in his stomach. Jane, oblivious to the tension, turned to Joshua and said, "Shall we get some coffee? I'm not ready for the night to end yet." Joshua forced a smile, trying to play it cool. "Sure, that sounds great." But as he followed Jane into the living room, he couldn't help but wonder what was going on between Annie and Alex. And why did he feel so threatened by it?
