The first sound Selene heard was Cora’s muffled cry, soft, scared, barely there, but it was enough to make her nerves on fire. Blood pounded in her ears as she turned the corner and froze. Lazarus stood like he owned the room, calm and collected, not a wrinkle in sight on his immaculate suit. He had one hand wrapped tight around Cora’s arm.
