Glass exploded inward, raining down like jagged diamonds. Selene hit the floor hard, the breath knocked from her lungs, pain blooming across her side. Smoke flooded in, thick, burning, relentless, curling through the penthouse like a living thing. Sirens wailed somewhere outside, but all she could hear was the high-pitched ringing in her ears and the wild hammer of her heartbeat. “Darius!” she choked out, blinking through the haze. “Darius!” A groan answered her from the corner. Her chest seized. He staggered to his feet, blood sliding down the side of his face from a cut near his brow. Glass glittered in his shoulder like twisted jewels, his breathing ragged. “I’ve got you,” he rasped, reaching for her. She grabbed his arm and pulled herself up, coughing as smoke invaded her throat.
