PAXTON
Being the alpha of the strongest pack in the United States has a lot of advantages and perks. You can go anywhere, and people are willing to serve you. You might see new faces, but despite that, they all act like they know you. You get the best treatment without asking for it.
It's just a good booster for my ego.
"I can't smell her," my twin brother, Pierce, scrunched his nose while subtly sniffing the air. I can also taste the disappointment in his words.
"Me neither," I replied as we walked towards the Moonlight Claw's pack house. Apparently, they prepared a feast for us.
Our guards covered us in every direction. Some of them carrying the few clothing and properties we needed for our travels. Did I say that being the alpha of the strongest pack makes you a target of danger?
"I don't know where to look anymore," Pierce sighed silently as we got nearer to the pack house. "I'm starting to think that we're mateless."
"Don't be too pessimistic," I clicked my tongue as my eyes darted around the facade of the pack house. It was...decent. But this cannot pass my standard.
Even if I disagreed with my brother's words, a small part of me wanted to believe the same thing. According to Alpha Jackson, all of their pack members will be attending the celebration.
If our mate is in this pack, then we should have smelled her once we're in front of the pack house. But we have already stepped inside the noisy environment yet we still couldn't smell anything.
Are we really going to be mateless?
"Alpha Paxton! Alpha Pierce!" the alpha of their pack greeted us with a respectful yet joyful tone. "We are very pleased and honored to have you in our territory."
Pierce just nodded, as nonchalant he is. "Greetings, Alpha Jackson. We appreciate the feast you prepared for us," I accepted the formal handshake he offered.
"Of course. Just the best treatment for the best alphas," he laughed it out before escorting the two of us towards the most extravagant table you can see in their pack. But it still cannot be compared to the ones we have back there.
"This is my son, Jared," Alpha Jackson motioned his hand towards a younger male, who's walking very funny. "He will be the next alpha in line."
Jared bowed to the two of us. "Greetings, Alpha Paxton, Alpha Pierce," he spoke so formally that I can smell his nervousness. This must be this young man's first time seeing a real, real alpha.
Pierce's eyes went down to his legs to his feet. "Your walk is not normal," he spoke his thought out loud. He might be nonchalant, but his intrusive thoughts always win.
"I...," Jared looked at his parents with an awkward smile. "I just had an unfortunate accident just hours earlier, but it's nothing. It will be healed by tomorrow."
We just shrugged and accepted his answer even if we are not satisfied. After all, we don't really care about him.
The feast started immediately after our arrival. A lot of pack members wanted to approach us, but of course, they can't do that. Being near us is already a privilege.
"Your dishes taste good," Pierce commented as he just finished his first plate. "Can I meet the cook who made this?"
The alpha was silent for a moment, and I could almost see the panic rising in his eyes. He stood up before his eyes looked for someone. He called the older woman's name and asked her to come.
"She's our main cook. She made each dish in this feast," Alpha Jackson spoke while gently patting the back of the woman.
The woman's hands were shaking as she faced us. "Alphas, I'm glad that you like my cooking," her voice quivered while speaking. "I made sure to cook it according to your taste."
Liar. I whispered to my brain. I can smell not just his nervousness but also the dishonesty filling the air between us. Why is this man hiding their cook?
"You did a good job," Pierce replied before sending the woman away. I'm sure he also knew that these people just lied in front of our faces.
While their alpha was busy yapping about the strategic location of their pack and the achievements they have, Pierce and I were busy locating our mate.
We had already sniffed around. I could sniff every corner of this pack house, but we still couldn't find anything. This is the last pack house we had visited in the United States. If our mate is not here, it's either we're mateless or our mate is on the other side of the world.
Fuck the first choice. I'd rather travel for a year again than be alone forever.
Pierce and I excused ourselves to go to our guards and inform them about our next steps. Our mate is not here, so there's no need to stay longer. We need to prepare for our next travel.
"Alpha," a feminine but annoying voice from a woman called for us.
Pierce couldn't give a s**t. He kept on walking as if he didn't hear the woman talking to us. I just chuckled deep inside before turning to the woman.
Pheromones. I can smell her bathing with it, but it's not just the natural pheromones; it's the artificial and s****l one.
My face almost contorted in disgust. Almost. I know what this woman is trying to do. Did she think that I will ram her cunt if she has that stupid s*x pheromones?
"Good evening," I greeted her, putting on a polite facade even if I wanted to push this woman away. The artificial pheromones she used are starting to irritate my nose.
"My name is Angel, and I'm sure you're Alpha Paxton," she moved closer as she brushed her hair to expose her neck. "Are you enjoying tonight's feast?"
Despite my irritation, I made sure to have a friendly face. "Yes. The food is good and the environment is inviting," I answered.
"That's so nice to hear, alpha," she got closer and was about to rub herself on me when I took a step back.
She was about to fall down, but she was about to get herself up because of her wolf reflexes. Too bad. Seeing her fall must be amusing.
"I would like to invite you to check our wine collection," she pointed at the other wing of the pack's house. "My father's taste for wine is immaculate. We can give you something you will like."
Her hand landed on my bicep, softly caressing it while looking up at me. I grabbed her wrist, and before she could think of something else, I pushed it away, but gently. I don't want to permanently injure someone in another's territory.
"That must be a tempting invitation," I falsely claimed. "But my brother and I don't have any intention to stay here longer, let alone check your wine collection. I can assure you that my collection is much more immaculate and extravagant than your father's."
I fixed my suit and my tie before landing one last glance on the woman. "And next time, stop wearing that pheromones. It's irritating and it won't work on us," I spoke with disgust. "Use that on your son's alpha. That might bring him to his knees."
I left the woman dumbfounded and joined my brother orienting our guards. He already has a map ready and what places we should go next. Of course, I am the one who made that.
During the discussion, my eyes caught a shadow running from the outside. Its movement was so fast that it passed like a wind.
But not only the shadow lingered in my mind. The scent it left trespassed our noses, carving itself in our heart, and giving us the thing we have been craving for a long time.
Found you, our mate.
