“How does he fare?” she asked, not realizing the man had been dozing off. “Oh, Captain!” he gasped in worry. “Sorry, I didn’t know you were coming down. I was just catching a small rest.” She rested a hand upon his shoulder. “Even you need sleep. How is he?” “I thought for sure we’d have lost him a handful of times,” he said honestly. “But his fever seemed to have finally broken, and he has come around for a few minutes here and there the last few hours.” “He will live?” “He is not out of trouble yet, but if he can stay awake long enough to eat and drink, I believe he will. His wound has closed, and I have done everything in my power to stop infection. But he is weak, and it will take him a fortnight or more to recover his strength enough to be back on deck to do any real work.” Call
