Chapter 6: The Truth, Infront Of Everyone

1409 Words
The second gathering in the Hollow came together fast, called at Cassian's order the morning after the northern boundary fight, word spreading through the pack with the particular electric urgency of an announcement nobody had been given details about in advance. Sienna stood at the edge of the crowd as it assembled, her side still tender beneath her shirt where the Ashgrove wolf's claws had caught her, watching two hundred familiar faces fill the same clearing where, weeks ago, she'd knelt in the cold grass and had her heart torn open in front of all of them. The symmetry of it wasn't lost on her — returning to the same ground to have the wound, at last, explained and healed in front of the same witnesses who'd watched it opened. Cassian took the center of the Hollow with Tobias at his side, and the crowd quieted with the particular immediate attention a pack reserved for its Alpha. "Three weeks ago," Cassian began, his voice carrying clear and steady across the clearing, "I rejected my mate bond in front of all of you. I told you it meant nothing. That was a lie, and I owe every one of you, but especially Sienna Marsh, the truth of why I told it." A murmur rippled through the crowd, heads turning to find Sienna at its edge, and she straightened her spine, refusing to shrink from the attention this time the way instinct urged her to. Cassian laid it out plainly — the threat from Ashgrove, the pattern of mate bonds targeted and destroyed in neighboring packs, the decision made in a matter of hours after the bond snapped into place, to protect Sienna by convincing any watching spy that the bond meant nothing. He didn't spare himself in the telling, didn't soften the cruelty of what the deception had cost her in the eyes of the pack, standing exposed in front of everyone in a way Sienna understood, watching him, was its own kind of penance. "Marcus Ashford was the leak," he continued, and the murmur through the crowd sharpened into something closer to shock. "He's gone now, taken back across the boundary by Ashgrove after his usefulness to them was exhausted. I don't know what becomes of him, and I won't pretend that troubles me more than what he nearly cost this pack. But the threat isn't over. Ashgrove knows now that the rejection was a lie, which means the danger that prompted it hasn't passed — if anything, it's likely to escalate." He turned then, looking directly at Sienna across the clearing, and something in his expression shifted from Alpha's formal address into something far more personal, unguarded in front of the whole assembled pack in a way he'd never allowed himself to be. "I asked Sienna to forgive a decision I made without her consent, about her own safety, her own life," he said. "She hasn't fully forgiven me yet, and she shouldn't have to, not on any timeline but her own. But she chose, despite everything I put her through, to help me protect this pack anyway. She fought beside me last night. She very nearly died doing it." His voice caught slightly on that, the memory still raw. "I don't deserve the grace she's shown me. But I intend to spend as long as she'll allow proving myself worthy of it." Sienna felt every eye in the Hollow turn toward her, the weight of the attention entirely different now than it had been three weeks ago — not pity this time, but something closer to genuine curiosity, even respect, several pack members she barely knew looking at her with new understanding. She walked forward into the center of the clearing, closing the distance between herself and Cassian under the weight of two hundred watching eyes, and found, standing there, that the fear of public exposure that had haunted her since the Hollow had simply, quietly dissolved. "He's right that I haven't fully forgiven him," she said, addressing the crowd directly, her voice steadier than she expected. "I want to be honest about that, standing here, the same way he's been honest about everything else. But I've also come to understand, over these last three weeks, that the man who rejected me in this clearing and the man who's been fighting beside me since aren't actually in conflict with each other. He made an impossible choice, badly, without asking me, and then spent every day since trying to make it right. That matters to me. More than I expected it to." She turned to face Cassian fully now, the crowd fading into background noise around the two of them. "I don't know what happens next, with Ashgrove, with any of this," she said, quieter now, meant more for him than the assembled pack, though she knew everyone could hear it. "But I know I don't want to keep hiding what the bond actually is. I'm done performing distance from something I don't actually want distance from." Cassian reached for her hand then, slow and deliberate, giving her every chance to pull away if she wanted to, and when she didn't, his fingers closed around hers with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the ferocity she'd witnessed from him at the boundary the night before. "Then let the pack witness it properly, this time," he said, loud enough now for the crowd to hear again. "Not a rejection. The truth." The Elder who'd presided over the original ceremony stepped forward from the crowd, understanding immediately what was being asked, and the Hollow settled into the same expectant hush it had held weeks ago, though the charge in the air now felt entirely different — hope instead of dread, anticipation instead of the awful uncertainty of watching a bond be severed. "Alpha Vale," the Elder said, "do you accept the bond?" "I accept it," Cassian said, no hesitation in it this time, his eyes never leaving Sienna's face. "Fully. Publicly. Without reservation." The crowd erupted — a mixture of cheers and relieved laughter and, from a few pack elders who'd clearly harbored their own private suspicions about the original rejection, knowing nods, as though some quiet worry they'd carried for weeks had finally been resolved. Sienna felt the bond settle into place fully for the first time since the Hollow, no longer wounded and suppressed but whole, warm, radiating through her chest with a certainty that made the weeks of careful performance and painful distance feel, for a moment, entirely worth it. Cassian pulled her into his arms in front of the whole pack, no restraint left in it now, and kissed her — not the brief, protective press of lips from her cabin doorway weeks ago, but something deeper, more certain, a promise made in front of two hundred witnesses instead of a lie told to protect her from a danger that had, in the end, found them anyway. "I'm sorry it took a public spectacle to fix a public spectacle," he murmured against her hair once the crowd's attention had shifted to their own celebration, wolves embracing and toasting and generally dissolving into the particular joyful chaos that followed any pack announcement of consequence. "I think I'm getting used to the Hollow being the site of major life events," Sienna said, something warm and a little wry in her voice now that the tension of the last three weeks had finally, blessedly, broken. "Might as well lean into it." "There's still Ashgrove to deal with," Cassian said, some of the earlier gravity returning even amid the celebration. "This doesn't end the danger. If anything, tonight makes the threat more immediate, not less." "I know," Sienna said, pressing closer against him despite the warning in his words, unwilling to let the looming danger fully eclipse the hard-won relief of the moment. "But we'll face it honestly, this time. Together, out in the open, instead of hidden behind careful performances. I think that matters more than either of us realized, going into this." Cassian looked down at her, something steady and resolved settling into his expression, the weight of command and the weight of love sitting, for the first time since the Hollow, comfortably alongside each other rather than in painful conflict. "Together," he agreed, and sealed it with another kiss, the Hollow around them alive with celebration, the truth finally, fully out in the open where it belonged.
