UNSPOKEN FEELINGS

515 Words
" The chemistry grows undeniable. A storm traps them in the mansion overnight. The twins asleep, the house quiet. In the dim firelight, they finally let their walls down and share a tender moment that changes everything". Days after the gala, something quiet but undeniable lingered in the air between Ava and Adrian. They spoke the same way as before - polite, careful , professional - but the small glances, the long silences, the unspoken warmth said everything words could not. The twins noticed it first. " Daddy smiles more when you're around", Emma whispered one morning as Ava brushed her hair. Ava laughed softly, pretending not to blush. " Maybe he just has more reasons to smile now". Ethan looked up from his drawing. " You should stay forever ". Her heart squeezed at the innocent words. " We'll see", she said quietly. That afternoon, the sky darkened with storm clouds. Rain came fast, heavy and wild. The house lights flickered and Mrs. Lane rushed about closing the windows. Ava checked on the kids in their playroom. " It's just thunder ", she said, pulling them close as lightning flashed. " Nothing to worry about". Adrian appeared in the doorway, phone pressed to his ear. " The power lines are down", he said. " We'll have to wait it out". " Everything's fine here", Ava assured him, her calm voice steadying the children. Hours passed and the storm refused to stop. When the kids finally fell asleep on the couch, Ava covered them with blankets and sat by the fire. Adrian entered quietly. The power was still out, so the room glowed with the golden flickers of flames. " You're good with them", he said. His voice was lower than usual, softer. Ava looked up. " They just need love - and someone who doesn't give up on them". He studied her face for a long time. " You've done more for them in weeks than I have in years". She shook her head , " You're trying, Adrian, That's what matters". It was the first time she'd used his first name. He noticed. The sound of rain softened, and the silence that followed was filled with something heavier - a pull neither of them could deny. Adrian moved closer, his gaze searching hers. " You make this house feel alive again", he said quietly. Ava's breath caught. " You've always had that life in you. You just forgot where to look". Their eyes locked, the firelight painting gold across their faces. For a heartbeat, it felt as if the world outside didn't exist - only them, standing too close, wanting what neither dared to say aloud. Then a soft sound - Ethan turning in his sleep - broke the moment. Ava stepped back, her pulse racing. " I should check the windows". she whispered. Adrian nodded, his voice rough. " Good idea". As she walked away, she didn't see him watching her - the man who'd built walls around his heart now realizing one woman had found a way through every single one.
