I walked as softly as I could. That was pretty hard because the ground had a whole lot of dried leaves and twigs. It was so quiet I could hear the blood rushing in my ears. Then, suddenly, a rustling in a bush to my left. I stopped dead in my tracks and slowly unsheathed my knife. I crouched low and stopped breathing so I could hear better. I heard voices. The first voices since the zombie virus had hit the world 2 month earlier. I heard bits of the conversation. "Zombies...army base...dead." What the hell where they talking about? Army base? There wasn't a army base anywhere around here. Those guys where talking crazy. Then I heard the familiar static of a radio. Then the person on the radio said "This is the commander of one of the last army bases standing in the U.S. We are located in Nevada state on exit 360 of the highway. We are taking in any survivors who can make it." Then the message repeated itself. "We should go." The first guy said. "And get eaten by zombies? Hell no." The second dude said. "We have guns and knives and we know how to survive in the wild. We'll be fine. Trust me." "The last time I trusted someone I lost my eye." My mind was spinning. I could go there. They could probably use my skills as a forager because I knew all the edible plants in Nevada state. My line of thought was interrupted by the sound of groaning and shuffling feet. "Zombies." The first guy said. "Time to go."Said Mr. one eye. No s**t Sherlock I thought. Instantly I heard them packing and then them running full speed. "RUNNER!!!" Oh no. Runners were the few zombies that could run as fast as Usian Bolt. The only difference was that they didn't tire or stop until they had their teeth in you. I ran as fast as I could, following the 2 men. We reached they highway and they started going faster. Like cars fast. "Damn those guys can run."I muttered to myself. Me, cleverly, had brought my car here. I got in turned the engine on and checked the tank. Full. Good. As I stepped on the pedal the zombie came out of the forest and I got my first good look. It looked totally human. Then it turned to look at me.I was shocked out of my mind. It's eyes were the color of blood. Bright blood. I stepped on the pedal as hard as I could. The thing chased me. Sweet zombie Jesus that thing was fast. It was catching up with me. The further down the highway I got though, the more it stopped chasing me until I couldn't see it and it had gone after an easier target. I breathed a sigh of relief. I had gotten away. That was when I started seeing the abandoned cars and zombies. The further down the highway I got, the more zombies and abandoned cars and trucks. As I turned down exit 360, I saw a family of 4 running from a group of zombies. I stopped right next to them and shouted at them to get in. As they got in, even before they had closed all the doors, I had stepped on the pedal and we where away. "Thank you." The father said. "Your welcome." I replied. "Are you going to the military base?" "Yup. You?" "Yes" The rest of the drive was quiet. Then we got to a line of cars a something that looked like a checkpoint. All the cars looked like they had seen better days. As we where called in, the man at the checkpoint asked for our names. "Ian." I said "Kevin, Audrey, Chesper and Cyril." Kevin said. The guard took the number-plate of my car and then waved us in. "That was too easy to get in. What if somebody's infected?" I asked. Silence was the answer I got. As we drove to the parking lot, there was a dead silence. As we got to the parking lot and got out, the family thanked me then headed off. I went into the building that everybody was headed into. As we got there I was ushered into a room with a nurse and was asked questions like where I was from and how I got here. Then he checked me to see if I had any cuts and then check my my blood pressure and listened to my heart and lungs "You are in great physical shape," He said,"one final question. What are you good at?" "I know edible and poisonous plants, I can hunt and track pretty well, and I can fish." "Would you like to become a Forager?" "Sure." The checkup was over and I was given dog-tags saying my name, my job and my ID. A man called Brandon showed me my room and then said he would be back just before dinner. I smiled and said,"Thanks." He gave a half smile and then went off to show somebody else their room. Ok people. How was this chapter?
