Chapter 11- Unraveling

386 Words
Élise had always found comfort in clarity—clear skies, clear intentions, clear hearts. But nothing about Luca was clear anymore. He had pulled back lately. Subtly. Softly. But she felt it. The way his fingers lingered less when they held hands. The way his mind wandered mid-conversation. The way his smile, once pure sunlight, now felt rehearsed under clouded skies. She told herself not to spiral. Maybe he was tired. Maybe the weight of relocation, of blending cultures and dreams, had simply worn him thin. But then again, Élise had grown up reading people—reading silences more than words. One night, while lying beside him, her hand resting on his chest, she whispered, “Is there something you’re not telling me?” Luca didn’t answer right away. His eyes stared at the ceiling as if searching for a constellation to guide him. His heartbeat didn’t quicken—if anything, it slowed. And that terrified her more. Élise didn’t push. She just lay there, her heart aching in the quiet. That ache stayed with her the next day. And the next. Until Luca finally broke. It was raining when he spoke—of course it was. Luca always said he found peace in the rain. That day, he met her at their usual spot, beneath the old stone bridge by the water. “I never told you everything,” he began, voice low. “Before I moved here… before us… I wasn’t someone I’m proud of.” He looked away, ashamed. “There was a girl. A life I left behind. Not because I stopped caring. But because I ran. I’ve been running ever since.” Élise didn’t speak. Not yet. Her breath caught, chest heavy with the pieces of this man she loved. “I never lied to you,” he added quickly. “But I didn’t know how to carry the past into the future. I didn’t know if you’d still want me… if you saw all of me.” The silence stretched, fragile and loaded. Finally, Élise stepped closer, her voice trembling, “I didn’t fall in love with your perfection, Luca. I fell for your honesty, your soul—even if it’s scarred. But don’t ever shut me out again.” He reached for her hand, uncertain. But she didn’t flinch.
