When Joshua did not come downstairs, she assumed he’d gone to bed. Extinguishing the oil lamp, she tiptoed past their houseguest’s door. It was the first time since she’d been sleeping with Joshua that she felt the impropriety of the arrangement. And though their guest, whoever he was, was dead asleep, she felt the need to sneak into the blacksmith’s room on the sly, as if she had to hide the truth. “Where were you, sir?” was the immediate question, Fiona ask her lover.
