I couldn’t sit still. The need to do something—to be there for Leah—was eating at me. So, I found myself at the hospital. When I pushed the door open and walked into Leah’s room, I wasn’t expecting them to be there. But there they were—the same two detectives who had been grilling her this morning. They looked as stiff and uncomfortable as I felt. Their eyes flicked up at me when I entered, but they didn’t speak right away. Instead, they gave me the same look that had been all too familiar since the moment I arrived: the kind of look that said, What’s she doing here?
