Chapter 2

I take slow steps while glancing through the library, utterly amazed by how many books are actually carefully arranged and organized in this library. Still not over the excitement my whole body is feeling after discovering the library, nevertheless, I explore other parts of my new apartment, searching every nook and cranny. And just when I was about to take a break, I needed a little bit of rest, but suddenly, I remembered that the house agent had made mention of a basement situated on the ground floor. I quickly got up, determined to search for this basement, and thinking of what I could turn it into—maybe a storage room wouldn't be so bad. I'm running out of ideas for what I could use the basement for. I finally arrive at a thick, gigantic wooden door, twisting the doorknob and peering through the door. I gasp at how large the space down here actually is. Moving further into the basement and not being mindful of my steps, I lose my balance and accidentally hit my left foot on a large wooden box, which I failed to take notice of. Tripping and falling face-first on the floor, I cursed under my breath at just how clumsy I was. Pain shooting through my left foot had me lying on the ground a little longer than I should have. I finally got up, with the pain still lingering on my left foot, and quickly dusted off the dirt on my dress. And suddenly I felt a sharp pain on my neck; it felt like sharp needles were sinking deep into my neck. The sudden pain on my neck made me abandon the pain I was feeling on my left foot. With my hand placed on my neck, trying to rub off the pain, I turn around with the intention of finding whatever object was responsible for this new, sudden pain. O boy was I wrong! for the object responsible for my pain had hands and legs, but what scared me the most were those sharp fangs of his. I must be hallucinating; vampires aren't real; maybe that fall made me lose my brain in the process, and now I'm seeing things. Because what other logical explanation could explain what was happening right now? The pain was quickly forgotten as I was filled with terror, shock, and confusion. He gazed at me intensely, his fangs disappearing back in. His hands move forward to caress my cheeks gently, and I'm taken aback by his sudden action. If he truly is a vampire, why is he not sucking dry my blood yet, and why is he looking at me strangely with a strange expression that I truly find hard to decipher? Still scared and terrified, but I however manage to bring myself to ask that question, which has been lingering on my mind. Stuttering with each word and desperately praying in my heart to be wrong, I ask, unable to fight my curiosity. "Are you a vampire?" A deep chuckle escapes his mouth, and he glances at me, clearly amused by my question, "What makes you think otherwise, or do humans have fangs too?" His words confirm my assumptions; my brain instantly goes fuzzy as I pass out. I open my eyes, feeling exhausted and tired. I had the weirdest dream ever, something quite unusual and disturbing—there was a freaking vampire in the house. My head turned abruptly at the sound of movements in the far corner of the room—freaking hell, that wasn't a dream! "You have to calm your nerves down, or you might end up passing out again," he said while placing a cold towel on my forehead. The next words leave my mouth before my brain can comprehend what my mouth is about to say: "Why are you not sucking me dry, and why are you being gentle with me?" His eyes stare at me intensely, and his next words made my heart pound at an uncontrollable rhythm: "No need to be scared, love, I can't suck my mate dry." He must be mistaken; this can't be, "I can't be your mate, there has to be a mix-up somewhere." This can't be happening; "anyone bitten by me as soon as I'm awoken must be my mate; this is something neither you nor I have any control over." Tears streak down my face. This was just too much to take in. I needed a fresh start, not this. How can I be a vampire's mate? This is absolutely ridiculous and terrifying at the same time. He suddenly looked at me with a confused expression: "You know crying won't change anything, and believe me when I say I won't hurt you." I wiped my tears away, trying to fathom how this union can even work out. I stand swiftly and start pacing around the room, pulling at my hair with frustration. My existence seems to be cursed; why do bad things keep happening to me? He kept staring at me as I continued pacing back and forth around the room, and just when I was about to pull out my hair once more in frustration, he stood up and quickly grabbed my hand, preventing me from causing further pain to my already aching scalp. "You have to stop doing that," he hissed. I stared at him blankly, my mouth trembling, and a loud sob threatened to escape my lips. "You really don't have to process everything at once, let's start with baby steps, like knowing your name, how does that sound?" He asks as he brushes strands of hair from my face and lifts my chin up, in a manner that our eyes stay at the same level, i whisper hoarsely, my throat feelinng dried up , "Jade, my name is Jade" a smile grace his lips as he repeats my name slowly "Jade, I'm Damien, it's good to know we are making a bit of progress." My throat still feels dry, so I stand up in an attempt to get something to quench my thirst. Right before I could leave the room to head down to the kitchen, a glass cup filled with water to the brim was being held up right in front of me. "How did you do that? That was really fast." I take the glass from him hesitantly, sipping the water and my throat feeling gradually relieved. "Well, I can be really fast. Perks of being a vampire." He smiles while scanning my outfit. Feeling quite uncomfortable under his intensifying gaze, I became self-conscious and a little embarrassed about my outfit. I was in such a rush while packing my things that I didn't give much thought to my outfit. He noticed my discomfort and turned his gaze elsewhere, "so tell me a little more about yourself, that might help you feel more
