Chapter 2

830 Words
Nathan pulled me into his arms, his face tight with anxiety, "Is your depression acting up again?" I did not answer him but instead, I looked straight into his eyes and asked, "Do you want a child?" His expression flickered for a moment. "Your current health… you're not fit to carry a child," he answered. Was it really my body that wasn't fit for childbearing, or did Nathan just not want me to have a child at all? I broke free of his embrace and slapped the photos I had taken down in front of him. Tears streaming down my face, I gritted my teeth and said, "Don't you owe me an explanation for what's going on between you and Vivian?" Nathan froze for a second, then his features turned cold. "You've been following me?" A thought seemed to cross his mind, and his gaze at me filled with mockery. Then he continued, "Your call today was all about this, wasn't it? What do you want me to explain? I cheated. I've fallen for my apprentice. What happened between us was an accident. "She's still young. I can't ruin her whole life. I've been supporting her all this time. The girl knows her place, she never bothered you. You're the one who had to drag this all out into the open." Nathan's calm accusations fell like a sharp sword, piercing through my chest until it ached. I knit my brows in agony, and Nathan instinctively reached to get my medication for me. I swatted his hand away hard. "Stop putting on that fake act of kindness. You make me sick!" Nathan's face darkened, and just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly rang. He answered it immediately, then looked at me with cold indifference. "I have to go now. Take some time and calm down." Nathan left in a hurry, and I followed behind him. I stood there helpless as I watched him buy a large bouquet of roses, with a box of strawberries in his other hand. I remember when I was pregnant with my first child, I was miserably sick from morning sickness, when I suddenly got a fierce craving for strawberries. Back then, Nathan was busy preparing for an international race, run off his feet. He only sent his assistant over with a fruit basket for me. There were all kinds of fruits in it, but the one I had been craving, strawberries, was nowhere to be found. And then I watched Nathan walk into the villa in the south of the city, wash the strawberries himself, and feed them to Vivian. I completely broke down. I ran over impulsively, pushed the half-open door open, and slapped him hard across the face! "Evelyn, have you gone mad?" He pulled Vivian into his arms to protect her, his eyes blazing with fury. "If you have a problem, take it out on me! Vivian is innocent!" I stumbled back two steps, unable to believe that these words could come out of his mouth. When I first found out I was pregnant, Nathan didn't care what anyone around us thought. He lifted me up and spun me around in pure joy. "Eve, I'm finally going to be a dad!" We couldn't even tell the baby's gender back then, but he still got so excited and bought a whole pile of model cars, saying he would raise our child to be a race car driver just like him. But now. "Do you want her to pay for it with her life!" Nathan's voice rose sharply, but when he saw my red, tear-filled eyes, it dropped low again. "Once Vivian has her baby, you'll be its godmother." Watching Nathan shield Vivian like this, my heart shattered completely. Vivian stepped forward and hooked her arm through mine, her nails digging into my flesh so hard it felt like she was about to tear my flesh off. "I have always felt so sorry for what happened all those years ago. I hope you can forgive me…" "Don't touch me!" I shook her off from the pain, but Vivian fell straight to the ground. "My baby…" Clutching her stomach in agony, she just fainted straight away on the spot. Nathan's face turned dark, and he glared at me furiously. "You know exactly what it feels like to lose a child, how could you try to hurt Vivian the exact same way?" He shoved me hard, picked up Vivian, and strode out the door. I stumbled and fell to the floor, my tailbone slamming hard against the ground, but the next second an excruciating pain exploded from my abdomen. "Nathan, help me, I'm preg—" Those lovely eyes that once looked at me with such tenderness were now filled with icy coldness. He cut me off and said, "The doctor said your body can barely conceive again. Evelyn, don't lie to me to wear out what little feeling I have left for you."
