Chapter 4

My mind went blank with a sudden buzz. I'm a kid from a poor mountain valley who got into college on my own scores. I have no family connections or influence to rely on. When I was doing my master's, my advisor was convinced I'd never dare resist him, so he started groping and harassing me. Even though he was eventually fired for academic misconduct, the deep trauma he left me still haunts me to this day. Nathan is the only person who knows about this. Now, Vivian has also spoken out publicly, "Sir Nathan and I have known each other since we were kids. He promised to marry me when we grew up. But Evelyn drugged him. She wants to use her baby to steal my place and climb the social ladder!" Vivian cried her eyes out, and the internet instantly flooded with abuse against me. A: [How can someone like this be a university teacher? All mistresses deserve to die!] B: [Even heaven can't stand her, that's why it killed Evelyn's baby!] The overwhelming barrage of abuse left me barely able to breathe, and a dull ache began to throb deep in my lower abdomen. Very soon, I received a notification that I was suspended from my job pending investigation. A suffocating feeling washed over me like a wave. I slumped to the floor, and my mother suddenly called. "What on earth is all this stuff online? Come home right now and explain this clearly!" She has a heart condition. She can't take this kind of shock! The moment I stepped through the door, a slap came flying straight at my face. I stared blankly and cupped my cheek, only then realizing Nathan was there too. My mother was shaking all over with rage, "Get on your knees! Evelyn, I raised you all these years, not for you to become a homewrecker and destroy other people's families!" I tried to explain, but my mother cut me off immediately, "Nathan has already told me everything! It's been you forcing him this whole time, and you've even been sleeping around behind his back!" I turned my head in disbelief, and sure enough, I saw a mocking sneer on Nathan's face. Before I could even open my mouth to speak, my mother grabbed my hair in a hysterical rage, "Apologize to Nathan and Miss Vivian! If you don't, I'll stop considering you my daughter!" The searing hurt of all these false accusations washed over me in an instant. Gritting through the pain, I refused to yield, "I'm the victim here! I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize?!" "You… you won't be happy until you've killed me, will you!" My mom gasped violently for air, then suddenly clutched her chest and collapsed straight to the floor! "Mom!" I threw myself at her like a madwoman, but her face was already turning purple, and she could barely even speak. I fumbled for my phone with trembling hands, only for Nathan to snatch it away in one motion. "You can call an ambulance, but you have to apologize to Vivian first." I was already on the edge of a total breakdown, and I roared the words out, "I will apologize to Vivian! I beg you to get my mom to the hospital first!" Nathan furrowed his brow, but in the end he gave my phone back. The moment we arrived at the hospital with the ambulance, he stepped in front of me to block my way. "Apologize to Vivian! Otherwise, no doctor will dare to treat your mom without my order!" Vivian had just been dropped off by her driver. When she saw me, a flash of triumph flickered across her face. I had practically bitten through the inside of my own mouth until it was raw. Bearing the overwhelming humiliation and unwillingness, I crashed heavily to my knees in front of Vivian. "I'm sorry. I'm the homewrecker." "You keep going until Vivian says she forgives you!" Nathan exclaimed. I bent over, and slammed my forehead hard against the floor. I did it again and again, until the floor turned red with my blood, and a constant ringing buzzed in my ears. Nathan furrowed his brow, looking almost faintly soft-hearted. "Alright, that's enough. Go check on your mom." He turned to leave, but Vivian suddenly leaned in close to my ear, a vicious smirk on her face. "I just showed her videos of you sleeping with different men. She was absolutely furious, wasn't she?" My mom couldn't take any more shock! All my reasons completely snapped, I scrambled desperately to the emergency room door. Only to see the doctor shake his head. "The patient's emotional volatility was extreme, and we started resuscitation too late. There's nothing more we can do." My heart shattered into a million pieces. My whole body convulsed uncontrollably, a searing pain twisting my abdomen like it was tearing it apart, and bright red blood poured out between my legs. I was wheeled into the emergency room, with no anesthesia administered. The moment that flesh and blood was torn from my body, my soul was destroyed along with it. "Your uterus has suffered severe trauma from external impact, plus two previous miscarriages. The damage is extensive. You will likely never be able to have children again... Please accept my condolences." I lifted my head numbly, all hope extinguished. I arranged my mother's funeral all on my own, and dragged my tattered, broken self back home. This house was meant to be Nathan's and my marital home. Back then, he was worried I would not feel secure and had the deed put in my name specifically. Now, as I looked at our messy home, I laughed tears of bitter irony. After I sent the two documents to Nathan by rush delivery, I turned around and tossed the lit lighter toward the curtains. Staring at the raging blaze that filled the room in front of me, I closed my eyes in despair and threw myself from the window edge. Nathan, if we are fated to meet again in another life, I only wish we had never known each other at all. End of Evelyn's POV Across town, Nathan was sitting in his office when his assistant burst in suddenly. "President Leighton, a rush-delivered document has just arrived for you!"
