CHAPTER FOUR Steve inspected his grandfather’s bungalow, looking for signs of tampering. When he got to the last window he’d not found footprints or jimmied locks anywhere. Though someone might have passed through the property, there was no sign they’d tried to break into the house. He shivered and spun to look behind him, anxious he was being watched. It was ridiculous. It had to be combat fatigue. Nonetheless, he scanned the yard, fearing someone might have materialized while he was bent over the ground. Yet only flickering shadows moved beneath the towering pines as sunlight played through the branches. With nothing else to check on, he might as well leave.
