“Just water for me, thanks.” Rose called Bill to the table where she’d set the pans of stew and garlic toast. Apparently, she lacked both the desire and the serving dishes to bedeck the meal. At supper, Lauren took a small serving of stew and a piece of toast. The stew was passable. The toast had too much garlic. She took her mind off the meal by quizzing them about Kathy. “What were her favorite foods growing up?” Rose tilted her head, thinking. “She loved spaghetti. She had it every birthday. And she liked fried chicken and sweets of any sort of sweets.” Lauren nodded. “I noticed how much she liked sweets.” They ate in silence for a moment.
