CHAPTER THREE Lauren nudged the door and peered inside. Normalcy greeted her. She didn’t see any disorder that would follow a burglary. She called for Kathy. No answer. Cautious, she entered the living room. Perhaps Kathy had left a note. The couch and loveseat formed an L in the middle of the room. Dark hair splayed from behind the couch. Lauren’s heart lurched. Though an attacker could be in the apartment, armed with a knife or gun, she tossed aside her fears. Kathy was in trouble. Minutes could matter if she was injured. She slipped around the couch. Her heart galloped when she saw Kathy’s ashen face, eyes wide with shock.
