Chapter Two: A Choice Written in Diamonds

538 Words
The ring glittered in Elena’s trembling hands as if it held the weight of an entire world. She sat on the edge of her bed that night, staring at it under the pale glow of the moonlight. Why me? The question kept repeating in her head. She wasn’t rich. She wasn’t powerful. She was just Elena Carter—an ordinary woman struggling to pay rent and take care of her younger sister. And yet, Alexander Knight, the untouchable billionaire, had asked her to be his wife. Her phone buzzed. A message lit up the screen. Unknown Number: You have twelve hours left. Her heart skipped. He wasn’t joking. --- The next morning, Elena arrived at her small coffee shop job exhausted, her mind clouded by the impossible decision. The smell of roasted beans and the cheerful chatter of customers usually calmed her. But today, nothing worked. “Elena? Are you okay?” her coworker asked, noticing her pale face. “I’m fine,” Elena lied, forcing a smile. But inside, her chest was tight. The bell above the door chimed, and when she looked up, her heart stopped. It was him. Alexander Knight walked into the tiny café, dressed sharply in a tailored suit that didn’t belong in this humble place. The entire shop went silent for a moment, the air thick with awe. “Mr. Knight?” Elena whispered in shock. He moved toward the counter with steady, confident steps. His gaze never left hers. “I told you. I don’t waste time.” Customers glanced between them, whispering. Elena quickly motioned for him to follow her into the storage room before the gossip exploded. Inside, she crossed her arms, trying to appear strong. “You can’t just show up at my job like this!” Alexander’s lips curved into the faintest smirk. “Why not? I came to see if you’ve made a decision.” “I—” she faltered. “I still don’t understand why me.” His expression hardened, but for the first time, she caught a flicker of something… vulnerable. “Because you’re the only one I can trust,” he said quietly, his voice edged with something raw. “And because appearances matter. My family… my company… they expect a wife at my side. But I refuse to marry someone who only wants my money.” Elena stared at him, stunned by the honesty in his tone. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Say yes, Elena. Not because of the diamonds. Not because of the wealth. But because you want to step into a life where you’ll never be invisible again.” Her heart pounded painfully against her ribs. He was offering her a world she could never reach on her own—a dangerous, glittering world where he stood as both her protector and her greatest risk. Alexander gently brushed a stray strand of hair from her face, his touch unexpectedly soft. “I’ll give you one last chance. Tonight. Midnight. My car will be waiting outside your apartment. If you come with me, you’ll become my wife. If not… I’ll never ask again.” And with that, he left, leaving Elena breathless, her world tilting on its axis.
