Chapter 4: The Money-Hungry Rebirth

"Get the contract ready," Oliver commanded coldly. "Vance Sterling is going to a party." "Then you had better learn how to walk like a god among wolves in less than twelve hours," Laura replied, her sharp voice slicing through the heavy atmosphere of the study. She tossed a thick silk pocket square onto the glass coffee table, right beside a pair of custom platinum cuff links and a tailored black Italian tuxedo. Across the room, four financial analysts from the Kiel Group were frantically tapping away at glowing holographic trading terminals, their faces illuminated by cascades of green and red stock tickers. Oliver stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror, his bare upper torso wrapped in tight, white medical bandages. Beneath the cloth, the newly installed titanium plate over his shattered shoulder throbbed with a dull, constant heat, but he did not allow his posture to slump for a single second. The weak, desperate orphan named Oliver Christ was dead. In his mirror reflection stood a predator reborn from blood and steel. "We do not just show up to Ethan's gala with cash, Oliver," Laura said, stepping up behind him and adjusting the collar of the silk shirt she handed him. "We enter as an unstoppable force. The offshore accounts in Zurich and Singapore have finalized the transfer. You now command the Sterling Global Syndicate, a fictitious private equity giant with five hundred million dollars in liquid leverage." "And who is my first target?" Oliver asked, his dark eyes fixing on hers through the glass reflection. "Ethan is too paranoid to sell his direct holdings right now." Laura smiled, a cold, sharp expression that made her look like a high-society assassin. She tapped her glass tablet, beaming a corporate hierarchy chart onto the main wall screen. "We strike his foundation," Laura declared, pointing her finger at a rotund, middle-aged man with slicked-back hair and a smug smirk displayed on the screen. "Marcus Vance. Ethan's chief financial officer and his most loyal attack dog in the Iron Basin. Marcus controls the Christ Logistics Network, the lowest financial branch of the family empire. He handles Ethan's off-the-books embezzlement schemes and launders the money through offshore shell banks." "Marcus," Oliver muttered, a dark memory flashing in his mind. "He was in the slaughterhouse. He was the one who handed Ethan the poison." "Then he pays first," Laura said smoothly. "Marcus has leveraged ninety percent of his personal equity into short options, betting that Christ Financial stock will double after tonight's announcement. He borrowed heavily from shadow lenders to maximize his profits. If the stock drops even eight percent before five o'clock trading closes, his lenders will call in his margins." "Which triggers an automatic liquid sell-off," Oliver realized, a sinister smile creeping across his lips. "And who holds the short-debt contracts?" "Sterling Global," Laura said, handing him a sleek gold digital pen. "Sign the authorization, Vance Sterling. Let us bankrupt your first lieutenant." Oliver took the pen without a moment of hesitation. He dragged his signature across the digital tablet, unleashing a silent, devastating tidal wave of predatory short sales directly into the Opal-Vane financial network. Within minutes, the screens across the room flashed violently red. "Short sell order executed!" one of the analysts shouted, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "Fifty million dollars in Christ Logistics debt dumped onto the open market! Market panic is spreading in the lower sector!" "Marcus Vance's margin call has been triggered!" another analyst called out, grinning triumphantly. "His personal holdings are collapsing! He is down seventy percent in three minutes!" Oliver adjusted his black silk tie, stepping away from the mirror as he pulled on the immaculate tuxedo jacket. The dark fabric hid the heavy bandages beneath, transforming him into a picture of absolute wealth, power, and untouchable sophistication. He slid a sleek silver mask over the upper half of his face, a common accessory worn by ultra-wealthy offshore investors attending high-society masques in Opal-Vane Metro. "He will be desperately searching for a bailout," Oliver said, his voice dropping into a dangerous baritone. "He will run straight to Ethan before the gala starts." "And Ethan will turn his back on him," Laura added, taking her fur coat from a valet. "Because Ethan Christ never saves a drowning dog. He only steps on its head." Three hours later, the rain-slicked streets of the Aether Tier the sky-high luxury district reserved for Opal-Vane’s elite were packed with black armored limousines. The Opal-Vane Grand Ballroom towered over the city like a palace made of crystal and gold. Giant holographic banners stretched across the skyscraper façade, displaying Ethan Christ's face alongside glowing letters that read: A NEW ERA OF SUPREMACY: CHRIST FINANCIAL IPO. Inside the private VIP lounge behind the main ballroom, classical orchestra music filtered through the soundproof glass doors. Marcus Vance, sweating profusely through his three-thousand-dollar suit, slammed his fists onto Ethan Christ’s polished mahogany desk. His eyes were bloodshot, his hands trembling as he stared at his glowing phone screen. "You have to cover my margin, Ethan!" Marcus panicked, his voice high-pitched and hysterical. "Some ghost syndicate out of Singapore just shorted Christ Logistics! My personal accounts are completely frozen! The shadow lenders are threatening to break my legs if I do not settle thirty million by midnight!" Ethan Christ stood near the window, casually sipping a glass of rare vintage champagne. He did not even turn around to look at his loyal CFO. "That sounds like a personal management failure, Marcus," Ethan said softly, his voice devoid of a single drop of warmth. "Personal failure?" Marcus shrieked, taking a step forward. "I helped you purge Oliver! I forged the shipping manifests! I forced the poison down his throat in that damn slaughterhouse! I did your dirty work, Ethan! You owe me!" Ethan slowly turned around. His eyes were icy, devoid of any human empathy. He gestured to two massive, suit-clad bodyguards standing near the door. "You are loud, Marcus. And loud men are a liability to a multi-billion-dollar floatation," Ethan sneered, tossing his empty glass into the marble fireplace, where it shattered into dust. "You served your purpose. But now you are broke, compromised, and useless. Get out of my sight before I have my men throw you into the same river Oliver drowned in." "Ethan, please!" Marcus sobbed as the two bodyguards grabbed him under his arms, lifting him off his feet and dragging him violently toward the service exit. "I made you! You cannot throw me away like this!" "Throw him into the street," Ethan commanded coldly. "And make sure he doesn't mar the entrance before my guests arrive." The bodyguards dragged the screaming, ruined man out into the rainy alleyway behind the grand ballroom, dumping him unceremoniously onto the wet asphalt beside the trash bins. Marcus lay in the rain, coughing, his life's savings wiped out, his status erased in a single afternoon. He hit his fists against the wet ground, weeping hysterically. Slowly, the heavy black tires of a custom armored Rolls-Royce pulled into the narrow alley, stopping mere inches from where Marcus lay. The rear passenger door opened. A polished leather shoe stepped out onto the wet pavement, followed by the towering, immaculate figure of Oliver Christ now Vance Sterling, draped in his black tuxedo and silver mask. Marcus looked up through his blurred vision, shivering in the cold rain. "Who... who are you? Please, I have nothing left!" Oliver stepped forward, his dark eyes gleaming cold beneath the silver mask. He reached into his inner pocket, pulled out a thick envelope stamped with the golden seal of the Kiel Group, and dropped it onto the ruined CFO's wet chest. "Inside that envelope is a ticket out of this city, Marcus," Oliver said, his voice smooth as velvet and dangerous as a loaded gun. "And five hundred thousand dollars in cash." Marcus gasped, clutching the envelope to his chest like a lifeline. "What... what do you want from me?" Oliver bent down, leaning in so close that Marcus could smell the faint scent of rain and expensive ozone. He lifted the edge of his silver mask just enough to reveal the jagged, fresh scar running along his left collarbone. Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. The color drained completely from his face as his breath hitched in his throat. "You... it’s not possible... you died in the shredder..." "I survived, Marcus," Oliver whispered, his voice slicing through the rain like a razor. "And now, you are going to give me the master access codes to Ethan's private offshore accounts." Marcus trembled violently, staring at the scarred man he had helped torture just forty-eight hours ago. Panic and survival fought in his mind, but his hatred for Ethan's betrayal won instantly. "He betrayed me..." Marcus wept, handing over a small, encrypted black flash drive from his coat pocket with shaking hands. "The codes are all in there... every bribe, every illegal transaction... he ruined me..." Oliver took the drive, his fingers closing tight around the weapon that would begin Ethan's total destruction. He stood upright, looking down at the broken man in the gutter. "You played your part well, Marcus," Oliver said coldly, turning back toward the warmth of the limousine. "Now go hide in the dark before I decide to collect the rest of my flesh debt." As the limousine door closed, Laura turned to Oliver with a dangerous, admiring smile. "Phase one complete. Ethan’s lowest flank is broken, and we hold his financial secrets." Oliver slotted the black drive into his portable terminal, watching millions of encrypted data lines unspool across the screen. "Now comes phase two," Oliver said, his dark eyes reflecting the neon lights of the grand ballroom as they approached the front gates. "Let us go interrupt my brother's crowning moment." Inside the grand ballroom, classical music played softly as hundreds of Opal-Vane’s most powerful politicians, billionaires, and media moguls mingled under crystal chandeliers. Heavy gold drapes hung from the balconies, and security guards with earpieces lined every exit. Ethan Christ stood on the elevated main stage, holding a wireless microphone. Beside him stood a podium bearing the official merger documents that would seal his economic monopoly over the city. "Ladies and gentlemen of Opal-Vane Metro," Ethan’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, captivating the entire room as camera flashes blinded the stage. "Tonight, we do not just celebrate the public stock floatation of Christ Financial. Tonight, we forge an empire that can never be broken!" The crowd applauded enthusiastically. Ethan smiled, taking a deep breath as he prepared to deliver his final, crushing move. "To ensure absolute market stability," Ethan announced with supreme confidence, "I am proud to reveal that Christ Financial has officially acquired the voting proxies necessary to merge with our greatest rival. By midnight tonight, I will officially sign the union papers alongside Miss Laura Kiel!" The room erupted into shocked murmurs and frantic hushed whispers. Ethan grinned, pointing toward the grand velvet doors at the back of the ballroom. "And now, I invite Miss Kiel to step forward and sign our shared destiny!" The massive double doors swung open with a heavy bang. But Laura Kiel did not walk in alone. Framed by the grand entrance, flanked by six towering, heavily armed private security guards in dark suits, stood Oliver Christ. His silver mask glinted under the chandeliers, his tall, imposing posture radiating an aura of terrifying authority and limitless wealth. In his hand, he held a sleek black leather folder containing twenty percent of Christ Financial stock. The music stopped instantly. The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Ethan’s smile instantly froze on his face. His eyes narrowed into slits as he stared down the long marble aisle at the masked stranger who walked with the terrifying grace of a ghost. "Who the hell are you?" Ethan demanded through the microphone, his voice echoing harshly across the silent ballroom. "Security! This is a private event! Remove this man immediately!" Oliver did not stop walking. He marched down the center aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before his commanding presence. Laura Kiel stepped into lockstep beside him, her head held high, her hand resting gracefully on Oliver’s arm. Oliver reached the foot of the main stage, looking up at his adoptive brother with eyes that burned with cold, lethal vengeance. He slowly reached up, taking the wireless microphone from a stunned master of ceremonies standing nearby. "You are in no position to give orders, Ethan," Oliver spoke into the microphone, his voice booming across the entire ballroom, broadcasted live to millions of viewers on national television. Ethan pales as "Vance" removes his mask slightly to reveal the collarbone scar, whispering into the microphone: "Did you really think rusty steel could hold me, brother?"
