Chapter one: The Gala Mia Sullivan felt the pressure of her first significant project bearing down on her shoulders as she tightened the strap of her plain black dress. Around her, the most influential players in the city were gathered in the opulent ballroom of the Kane Tower. She was merely a reporter, a young woman attempting to establish herself. Tonight, however, she was on a mission: to learn the truth about Alexander Kane, the mysterious millionaire who ruled his empire like a stronghold. She moved resolutely among the visitors, keeping a close eye out for him. However, he was the first to discover her. She was stopped in her tracks by a deep voice that glided through the air. "Why have you come here?" Mia turned and met Alexander Kane's gaze. He was more menacing up close than she had thought. She maintained a strong stance, but his intense stare held hers with a force that made her heart race. "Just here to cover the gala," she said, smiling slightly. reporting on the highlights of the evening. Unfazed, he simply raised an eyebrow in response to her strong emphasis. "Highlights," he repeated, his black eyes glimmering with a hint of humor. "You give the impression that you're looking for something more than a headline for the evening." "Perhaps I am." Although she maintained a neutral tone, the difficulty was obvious. People are interested. They are curious about the true Alexander Kane. One corner of his mouth lifted in a faint grin. And do you suppose he'll be here? Among empty cups and strangers? She was not backing down, as evidenced by the slight softening of her voice. "Perhaps the real Alexander Kane is not as hard to locate as he believes." His smirk disappeared, and his face briefly displayed a raw, suspicious look. However, it vanished as swiftly as it had appeared, to be replaced by a confident mask. He whispered, "Be careful, Miss Sullivan," in a foreboding tone. "Dangerous things can come from curiosity." And I've never been afraid of risk," she said, echoing his ferocity. They stared at each other until Clara, her best friend, came to her side and brought her back to the present. "Mia! I've been searching everywhere for you! The tension was relieved by Clara's upbeat interjection, and Mia looked to her friend with gratitude. "This is Alexander Kane, Clara," Mia stated in a lighthearted manner. As if understanding the implicit challenge that had gone between them, Clara's eyes widened as her gaze flicked back and forth between them. She smiled cautiously and said, "Mr. Kane." "I hope you haven't had too much trouble with Mia." Alexander nodded courteously to Clara, then returned his focus to Mia. "Is something wrong? "No," he answered in a surprisingly composed tone. "She's actually... fascinating." Mia made an effort to hide the heat that was seeping into her cheeks. She had no intention of leaving an impact. She had a goal she could practically taste: to tell a story. However, she was unable to ignore the excitement his words caused her. Clara whispered in her ear, "Mia, watch out." You don't want to play games with this person. Even though Mia nodded, her eyes remained curious. When Clara had fallen away, Mia looked back at Alexander. I would like to know what created your empire, Mr. Kane. What motivates you? He examined her while leaning against a marble column and crossing his arms. "You believe you can enter here and reveal secrets that people have kept hidden for their entire lives?" "That's my job," she said. "And I do it well." Alexander's eyes become stony. "Then prepare yourself for a challenging journey." She looked as hard as he did. “I don’t fear difficulty.” She hoped that the conviction in her voice concealed her nervousness. He let out a little giggle, but his concentrated gaze did not waver. "Then you're going to have a lot of adventures." He had just finished speaking when the sound of shattered glass filled the room. As the lights dimmed, Mia turned to see a tray of glasses fall to the floor, scattering the visitors. Alexander's jaw tightened and his eyes grew piercing as he saw the chaos. He said, "Pardon me," and then stormed off in the direction of the noise without saying anything more. Mia inhaled deeply, her thoughts whirling. She couldn't help but feel drawn to this man despite his enigmatic nature and distant authority. However, she ignored the idea and concentrated on her task. Instead of being embroiled in Alexander Kane's secrets, she had come here to uncover them. Clara returned a little while later, her face displaying a mixture of interest and worry. She looked at Alexander's retrenchment and questioned, "What was that about?" With her arms folded, Mia suppressed a sigh. "I'm not sure. He appeared to be intense. Clara's eyebrow went up. "Are you certain you understand what you're doing?" Mia's eyes become stony. "I need to learn more. I might get my big break from this. Despite her doubtful expression, Clara nodded. "Just swear to me that you will exercise caution. This man is different from the rest. Mia, he's dangerous. Mia nodded, but it only made her determination stronger. Alexander Kane was the key to the truth, and she was here to find it. No one, not even herself, was going to stand in her way. It took many minutes for Alexander to reappear. He approached her with a cautious expression on his face, the tension still evident in his posture. "We must speak." There was no space for debate in the way he stated it. Folding her arms, she questioned, "About what?" His voice was low as he answered, "About what you really want." "Because you won't find what you're looking for if you're here to pry." A wave of frustration swept through Mia. "Perhaps I'm searching for something you don't want me to find." Alexander's eyes gradually grew softer. I created my life to safeguard the things that are important to me, Miss Sullivan. I'm not willing to change that at all. She felt the weight of his words for a minute. "So maybe you need someone to remind you that life is about more than just secrets." His careful attitude broke as if he were surprised. However, he instantly regained his composure, hardening his eyes. "And perhaps you should realize that you don't want to be a part of my world." Unwilling to show him her indifference she lifted her chin. "You have no right to make that decision for me." They were at a standstill and neither of them was prepared to compromise when they heard laughter coming from the other side of the room. Mia spun around and saw a figure observing them with a sinister grin. When Alexander saw the stranger, he tensed up and his eyes darkened. "Victor," he said to himself in a cold tone. "Winner? Who is that? Mia noticed the stress in his voice and questioned. Alexander answered, his contempt scarcely disguised in his voice, "Someone who has no business being here." Mia saw Victor's eyes hover over her while a cunning smile twisted his lips. She whispered, "He doesn't seem like a friendly face." "He isn't," Alexander shot back. "Remain near. I have no faith in him. As Mia saw Alexander's attitude change from protective to guarded, her heart raced. This was more than just a story now; it was about something more profound, something she was still unsure of. She also couldn't resist the excitement of being pulled into his world, even though she knew better. His eyes narrowed with obvious malice as she turned back to face Victor. She had the depressing impression that her life was going to change in unexpected ways as a result of the encounter. "Are you certain you wish to be present?" Alexander inquired, his tone softening, a glimmer of sincere worry piercing his customary tact. "Yes," she said in a firm voice. "I am capable of managing myself." He looked at her for a long time , then nodded. "All right. But keep in mind that there is no turning back once you enter my universe.
