Chapter Two:
Entering the Shadows
As Mia followed Alexander through a side door and left the glamour and lights of the gala behind, her heart raced. They entered a silent hallway that was softly lighted by wall sconces as the hefty oak door closed behind them. She felt that this was a turning point; she was entering Alexander's world, which was seductive yet rife with unspoken peril.
She asked in a firm voice, "Why did you bring me here?"
Alexander stopped, staring intently. "I assumed you were interested in learning more about me. However, you're about to see a side that may cause you to reconsider if that's the case.
He inhaled deeply and appeared to have trouble speaking for a little while. But then his voice softened and his resolve tightened. "Miss Sullivan, my life is a fortress—it was constructed to guard everything that is important to me. To intervene is to cross uncrossable boundaries.
Mia looked up at him, her eyes glimmering with defiance. "I came here not to be intimidated. To find the truth, I came here. Are you not concealing that behind those walls?
He moved in her direction, enclosing her with his powerful yet protective presence. He lowered his voice to a near whisper and said, "Mia, this isn't a game." Furthermore, it's more complicated than truth and lies. I can't guarantee that if you insist on remaining close, the darkness here won't affect you.
Her chest tightened with a mixture of fascination and anxiety as her heart skipped a beat. However, she resisted, not wanting to appear hesitant. Then demonstrate for me. Tell me what it is you're so terrified of.
As Alexander looked into her face, his expression softened. "All right," he murmured softly, his voice a mix of acceptance and caution. "Remember, I gave you an opportunity to leave."
He turned on his heel and gestured for her to follow before she could reply. Their footsteps reverberated in the quiet as they proceeded along a little corridor. They round a few corners and came out into a large study with leather-bound books, dark wood paneling, and one elaborate desk.
Alexander's face was unreadable as he approached the window, the faint light from the surrounding cityscape framing his silhouette. Before he eventually spoke, he appeared to be deep in thought. "My brother is Victor, the man you saw before. However, in the truest meaning of the word, we are not family.
Mia was taken aback, remembering the icy animosity that had existed between them at the dinner. "If you're so distant, why would he be at your event?"
"Because he likes to cause trouble." Alexander's tone was abrasive. "Victor has always been motivated by ambition and jealousy. He sees only an empire that he feels is rightfully his, not loyalty or family.
Mia moved in closer, noticing the tension in Alexander's face as he talked about his history. "And you believe he intends to hurt you?"
A sarcastic sneer twisted Alexander's mouth. "Harmed me? To say that would be an understatement. He will do whatever it takes to seize what I have created. He believes he has a right to all of this company's assets and wealth. And he will probably target you as well now that he sees you with me.
Mia's determination simply grew stronger. She looked him in the eye and raised her chin. "I am capable of managing myself."
"Are you able to?" His face changed from one of amusement to one of real concern as he gazed at her. "His ruthlessness is beyond your comprehension. I have witnessed him deceive, manipulate, and break those who dared to oppose him.
As Mia took in what he had said, a thick stillness descended between them. It was evident that underlying Alexander's calm façade was a traumatic, intensely personal past that he made an effort to conceal behind his tough exterior. A part of her softened as she felt his pain, despite her need to dig deeper for the story.
"Alexander," she said, "why haven't you retaliated? stopped him?
He looked off into the distance. "I believed it was sufficient to keep him out of my life. I was mistaken. As if revealing this weakness hurt him more than he wanted to, his voice faltered.
She was surprised by the vulnerability in his comments. He felt raw and human because of the fracture in his armor. Impulsively, she extended her hand and found his. They were both taken aback by the touch, which sent a shockwave through their relationship.
"You're not alone in this," she said in a steady but sympathetic murmur. "Everything doesn't have to be carried by you alone."
Something flickered in his eyes, making him uneasy as he glanced down at their connected hands. However, he strengthened his hold rather than releasing it. There was a hint of panic in his voice as he whispered, "You don't understand what you're offering." "Those who are close to me often suffer harm. Even bad at times.
Despite the obvious warning, Mia remained steadfast. "Perhaps the risk is worthwhile."
His countenance was seething with something deep and stormy as he looked at her. However, a loud crash and the clinking of broken glass came from the hallway before anyone could say anything. Alexander's expression grew gloomy.
"Remain here," he commanded in a stern voice. "I'll go take a look."
However, a rush of excitement had already overcome Mia's prudence and she was heading for the door. "I'll accompany you. I'm not going to wait around for answers any longer.
Although Alexander's eyes glowed with rage, there was also admiration for her fortitude. "All right," he responded in a deep, ferocious voice. "But keep in close proximity."
Side by side, they made their way down the hallway until they arrived at the main hall, where the guests had started to reassemble and were muttering incoherently. Victor was standing in the corner of the room, staring at them with a smug look that made Mia shudder.
Alexander positioned himself between Victor and Mia, his body tensing. "Victor, what do you want?"
Victor's smile broadened as his eyes shifted uncomfortably to Mia. "Brother, I just wanted to say congratulations. What a find. He nodded at Mia mockingly. "A journalist who believes she can enter here and play the hero."
The suggestion infuriated Mia, but she made herself stand her position. With a firm voice, she stated, "This is between you two." "All I want to see is the truth."
Something gloomy replaced Victor's amusement as his demeanor changed. "The reality?" he scoffed. "Miss Sullivan, the game of truth is perilous. You would be wise to keep it in mind.
With a low, threatening voice, Alexander took a step forward. "You're doing something wrong if you believe you can intimidate her."
Victor squinted his eyes. "Well, Alexander, I believe you are the one who made the error. Including her in this merely reveals your frailty. You are aware that you are endangering her.
Alexander's hand closed protectively over Mia's. His eyes never left Victor's, but she could feel his internal conflict between protecting her and allowing her to fight with him.
With a deadly calm in his voice, Alexander continued, "Victor, this ends here." "You're not obtaining what you believe you're after. Never, ever tonight.
With a cunning gleam in his eye, Victor's eyes darted between them. "We'll check on that." He took a step back and spoke louder for the benefit of the audience. "It appears that there is some family drama going on tonight, ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully, it won't get messy.
The crowd erupted in laughter, but Mia sensed the tension rising. The purpose of Victor's taunt was to test Alexander's limits and provide a challenge. She could tell it was effective by the way Alexander's palm clenched around hers.
Victor gave one last arrogant look before disappearing into the throng, leaving a tense quiet in his wake. Mia saw Alexander's rage bubbling beneath his composed appearance as he stared at the spot where Victor had vanished.
"Are you alright?" She looked up at him and inquired in a quiet voice.
He nodded, but his face stayed gloomy. "I'm all right. However, you should avoid him at all costs.
Mia shook her head, determined. "I won't be leaving. Whether you like it or not, we are all in this together.
For a brief moment, she saw his guard drop as he looked into her face, revealing something raw and vulnerable. "Then, Mia, you must be prepared. Victor will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Additionally, he will not hesitate to pursue you.
She was chilled by the warning, but she looked him in the eye with equal ferocity. "He is not a threat to me."
A tiny, melancholy smile curved Alexander's lips. "Then you're more courageous than most." His voice was hardly more than a whisper as he moves closer. "Remain near me. Make me a promise.
She answered, "Promise," with a sense of warmth coursing through her despite a pa
rt of her wondering if she had just crossed a line that she would never be able to reverse.
