Chapter Three:
The Battle
As Mia and Alexander made their way to the exit, worry persisted despite the enormous ballroom's return to its elegant serenity. Mia's thoughts were still racing from their encounter with Victor. Alexander's hand was firmly on her lower back, his touch a strange combination of urgency and protection, and she could feel his quiet rage as he led her through the mob.
As they got closer to the outer hallway, she questioned, "What exactly did Victor mean back there?"
Alexander's stare was fierce, his jaw clinched. "Victor takes pleasure in inciting fear, particularly with threats he believes he can manipulate." His voice was tinged with frustration as he gazed down at her. "What makes him dangerous is that he knows how to push people to the limit."
Even as Mia's heart raced, she refused to back down. Then, Alexander, tell me. Why is he so hostile toward you?
His eyes narrowed slightly as he inhaled sharply. "Because I stole the business, the legacy, and the life he thought should have been his, but he was never able to accomplish it himself."
A heated quiet passed between them as their eyes locked. Mia felt a glimmer of vulnerability in his face that she had never noticed before.
Her voice grew quieter as she added, "I don't understand." "Why didn't you permanently cut him out of your life if you knew what he was capable of?"
He laughed without fun, his face growing serious. "You don't believe I've tried? However, family is like a wound that never really goes away. He hesitated, as if considering what else to say. "Victor is angry with me for taking everything my father built because he always felt he was meant to inherit it."
"Did you?" Almost in a whisper, Mia asked.
He looked at her painedly. "No. He would never see it that way, though. I started this company from scratch, and he finds it incomprehensible that I was able to flourish without him.
Between them, a hush descended, laden with unsaid words. Mia experienced an unexpected mixture of rage and sympathy, but before she could react, a well-known voice reverberated across the corridor.
"Well, isn't this a pleasant little conversation?"
Mia's heart sank when she turned to see Victor approaching them with his sly smile as menacing as ever. A few steps away, he came to a halt, his eyes darting between her and Alexander with icy laughter.
Alexander moved forward, obscuring Victor's view of Mia. "Victor, what do you want?"
Victor's smirk grew as he lifted his palms in a faux surrender. "Calm down, sir. I'm merely here to converse. His eyes went to Mia and lingered there with a mix of curiosity and contempt. And to find out what kind of women you would put everything on the line for.
Anger flashed through Mia. "Victor, I'm not here for you or your games."
Victor's laugh was contemptuous and icy. "Oh, Mia. You're more involved than you realize. Despite his heroic persona, my brother is really just a thief—someone who took something that wasn't rightfully his.
Alexander clenched his hands and growled, "Stop it." She is not the subject of this. Do not involve her if you are at odds with me.
Victor's smile vanished as his eyes hardened. "Alex, that's the problem. By bringing her into your universe, you have included her in this. Do you not see? I'm just defending what belongs to me.
"Yours by right?" Mia laughed. "From what I've observed, you are the one attempting to demolish everything he has constructed."
Anger flashed in Victor's eyes. "Everything he's constructed? What a farce. With a poisonous look on his face, he turned back to Alexander. "You have taken away everything from me, including our father's business, his legacy, and the respect I was due."
Despite his placid demeanor, Alexander's words were sharp. Victor, I didn't steal anything. I merited it. Perhaps you might have something of your own if you worked more and resented me less.
Victor grinned again, but this time it was tinged with resentment. "Brother, you believe that you are untouchable? You believe that after she discovers who you are, she will stick by you?
Alexander's gaze grew strained. "Even if you threaten her once more—"
"Have you threatened her?" Victor cut in with a derisive tone. "Alex, I'm not threatening anyone. I'm just providing her an option. She should, after all, be aware of the type of man she is associating with.
As Mia listened to the conversation and sensed the tension building, her heart raced. She looked at Alexander and was uneasy when she noticed a moment of panic in his eyes.
With calculating eyes, Victor turned to face Mia. "Did Alexander share his past with you? Regarding the actions he has taken to maintain this empire? Does he just say what he wants you to hear, or what else?
Alexander's hands were clenched into fists as he growled, "Enough, Victor." "You have no knowledge of my life. Nothing.
"Oh, don't I?" With a sly smile, Victor stepped forward. "Mia, tell me. Are you aware of the number of people he has crushed to reach his current position? How many secrets has he buried in order to preserve his priceless reputation?
Alexander's hand closed around Mia's, his hold firm but reassuring. She raised her head and fixed him with a determined expression. "Victor," she responded calmly, "I don't care about his past." "I trust him, which is why I'm here."
Victor's eyes hardened as a flicker of rage passed across his face. "You're a fool, then." With a venomous tone, he turned to Alexander. "Brother, even if she may be loyal to you now, she will eventually see you for who you truly are. And I'll be there to pick up the pieces on that day.
Victor gave one last sneer, then pivoted on his heel and went back down the corridor, leaving a dense hush behind him. Even as Victor vanished, Mia's pulse slowed, the strain still present.
Keeping his hand firmly in hers, Alexander exhaled deeply. He said, "I'm sorry," while keeping his eyes on the ground. "That shouldn't have had to be seen by you."
Mia turned to face him completely and shook her head. I don't fear him, Alexander. Because I want to be, I'm here.
Something she had never seen in him before softened his expression as he looked up. vulnerability. "You have no idea what you're saying. Victor poses a threat to everyone who supports me, not just to me.
"Then allow me to support you," she answered firmly. "I'm not fleeing from you or from this."
He appeared to struggle with what she had said as he closed his eyes. His face was unreadable when he turned to face her once more. "You don't realize how much risk you're taking."
Mia put a palm on his cheek as she reached up. "Perhaps. However, I'm ready to take the chance.
Alexander's eyes grew gloomy as a struggle raged inside him. At last, though, he whispered, "You're too good, Mia," leaning in and pressing his forehead against hers. I'm pulling you into a world that is too good for you.
She breathed in his warmth while closing her eyes. "Then demonstrate to me why it is worthwhile."
The sound of approaching footsteps reverberated down the hallway before he could reply. Alexander stiffened, retreated, and positioned himself in front of her in a defensive stance.
Victor was back, his sneer much more self-satisfied than before. His eyes gleamed with victory as he held out a tiny flash disk. "Oh, there's more. I have shared the files since I believed you might be interested.
Alexander's voice was low and lethal, and his features stiffened. "Which files?"
Victor grinned more broadly. "The ones who tell you all of your empire's naughty secrets, brother. Everything you attempted to conceal.
Victor's smug look as he grabbed the flash drive sent a shiver down Mia's spine. "Alex, you believed you could keep me out of your affairs. However, you overlooked one point. I always come out on top.
Victor turned and left before Alexander could reply, his laughter resonating through the hallway. Mia looked at Alexander and saw the anger and frustration written on his face.
His face was dark as he gazed at her. "Mia, I won't allow him to do this. I will stop at nothing to keep you and everything I have created safe.
Mia nodded, a wave of resolve washing over her. "Then let's defend ourselves."
There was something vicious and unforgiving about the way his eyes met hers. With adoration in his voice, he whispered, "You're braver than I could have ever imagined."
As they stood there, their tension changed from dread to something more profound—a connection made via the furnace of trust and struggle. Although Mia was aware that she was entering perilous terrain, she felt for the first time that she was supposed to be there.
As they returned to the main hall, she was confident that they would confront any situation together.
