Chapter Four: The Truth Uncovered When Mia and Alexander slipped into a quiet part of the building, the lights from the ballroom seemed to be miles away. The promise of late-night secrets glittered in the city beyond, but inside the shadows were nothing but stress. The flash drive Victor had brandished in their faces, his derisive laughter still echoing in her ears, made Mia's heart race. "Alexander, what could he have on that drive?" Mia inquired, her tone low but full of desperation. His silence spoke louder than words as she felt his hold tighten on her hand. A beat later, his face was stormy as he turned to face her. Enough to make everything fall apart. My business, the foundation we have established—everything. Mia experienced a wave of empathy, but the underlying emotion was rage. How could his own brother Victor act in such a way? She was unable to fathom Alexander's suffering. Her voice was firmer than she felt when she continued, "We'll find a way to stop him." Alexander gave a headshake. "Victor doesn't care who he harms in order to achieve his goals. He has resented me all of his life and is waiting for an opportunity to ruin everything I have created. His face was shadowed by bitterness as he paused. "He is aware of my weaknesses and will take advantage of them." Sensing that there was more to the story, Mia examined him. "What aren't you telling me, Alexander?" He appeared conflicted for a time, looking down at the ground. "I have taken certain actions and made concessions in order to establish this empire. decisions I regret. Mia sensed the weight of his past pressing down on him as his voice faltered. "Victor can manipulate that history because he has access to it." Despite her tense heart, Mia maintained her composure and put a hand on his arm. "Then allow me to assist you. We have this in common. His face softened as he looked into her eyes. "Mia, you don't have to do this. You could leave all of this now and walk away. I wouldn't hold it against you. She gave a headshake. "I'm not going anywhere. Not right now. She made a vow she didn't intend to breach, and her voice was unflinching. "No matter what, I want to be there for you." He briefly let his guard down, allowing her to see the hurt and weakness hiding behind his gruff demeanor. But before he could continue, there was a loud clang that reverberated down the corridor, and then he heard heavy boots coming. Alexander's instinct for protection took over right away. He moved, putting himself in between Mia and the noise. His voice was strained as he murmured, "Stay behind me." They saw Victor emerge at the end of the hall, his grin icy in the low light. "Oh, brother, are you and your new little friend running off to hide?" His voice was brimming with derision as he scoffed. "How heartwarming." Alexander tightened his jaw. "Victor, what do you want?" Victor gave a slow, sarcastic laugh. "Alex, I believe you are aware. Everything our father left behind—the business, the legacy. I'm only taking everything back because you stole it all. Alexander retorted in a furious tone, "You have done nothing but destroy everything our family has worked so hard to achieve." "This is not your legacy; it is mine." Victor gritted his teeth. Do you tell yourself that? Because it appears that you are the one who is lying, in my opinion. His grin widened as he turned to face Mia. "And bringing her into this situation... Thank you. Is she even aware of the reality? Mia resisted Victor's attempts to intimidate her and stood her ground. "Victor, I don't fear your threats." "Oh, you ought to be," Victor said with ease, turning back to Alexander. "Because I have all the evidence I require to demonstrate to the world your true character. The vicious businessman who will go to any lengths to achieve his goals, even if it means going against the grain. Alexander took a step forward, his face unblinking. "I took the necessary actions to safeguard the business. However, you wouldn't comprehend that. You are only capable of destruction. Victor laughed icily. "Alex, such beautiful words. You cannot ignore the skeletons in your closet, though. With a menacing smile, he took a tiny flash drive out of his pocket and waved it. "And now, all of them in one small file." Alexander's clammy yet solid fingers tightened its hold on Mia. She looked into his eyes and saw the conflict between fear and rage. Everything Alexander valued was at risk from whatever Victor had on that drive. She took a step forward mindlessly. "Give it to me," she commanded in a firm voice. Victor, obviously amused, lifted an eyebrow. "Why would I do that, too?" Because what you're doing isn't about family or justice," she retorted in a disdainful tone. This is about straightforward, unadulterated retaliation. Out of jealousy, you're prepared to destroy your own brother. That tells you something about the true villain, doesn't it? Victor's face twitched, but he put a fast laugh over it. Isn't she feisty, then? His grin remained fixed as he pocketed the flash drive. "I am nearly impressed." Alexander softly drew her back. "Mia, don't interact with him. He isn't worth it. Victor hissed, "Oh, but she's right, brother." "My sole purpose is to level the playing field. And the reality? Your small dominion will be torn to pieces by the truth. Alexander clinched his hands and spoke in a low, menacing whisper. "If you even attempt to make that information public—" "Or what?" Victor cut in with a derisive tone. "Will you prevent me? Alex, you're not strong enough for that. You have always been. As Mia watched Alexander battle his rage, her heartbeat sped. His eyes were filled with a hatred she had never seen before, and they were fixed on Victor. At that moment, she understood that this was more than simply a rivalry; it was a wound that had accumulated over years between them, a resentment brought on by treachery and broken familial bonds. Alexander's voice trembled with hardly contained anger as he shouted, "Victor, I'm warning you—" Victor's grin broadened as he glanced at Mia. "Alex, your warnings are meaningless to me. However, I wonder... Is she even aware of the type of man she is actually standing next to? Or are you merely presenting her with the aspect that supports your narrative? Even though Mia's stomach turned, she remained firm and didn't let Victor's remarks weaken her determination. She answered steadily, "I know enough." Victor's face grew serious. "We'll see how long that lasts after that." Before continuing, he paused and let the silence to linger. "Alexander, the world will learn the truth about you tomorrow. And nobody will be left who is willing to support you. There was a noticeable hush as he turned and strode down the corridor. Alexander's shoulders slumped as the realization of Victor's threat set in, and Mia felt his hand loosen a little. She spoke softly as she turned to face him. "Alexander, this is something we can overcome. Your identity is not defined by what's on that drive. However, his voice was empty and his eyes were far away. "Mia, you have no idea what I have done. The individuals I had to shove aside, the lengths I went to... It's over if that information is made public. Everything I've worked so hard to build and everything I value is gone. With a quiet conviction in her words, she took a step closer. After that, we'll figure out how to stop him. Alexander, I'm not going to give up on you. whatever occurs. For a minute, she could see the fear and uncertainty in his eyes as he gazed at her. But it was gone as fast as it had come, replaced with a hard resolution. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe if you're willing to take this risk." With a tight grip, she reached for his hand. "We have this in common." They heard footsteps reverberating from across the corridor as they turned to go. A security man showed there with an envelope in his hand and a pallid face. With a shaky voice, he gave it to Alexander. "Sir, this just got here for you. There was no name left by the sender. Unable to read his face, Alexander accepted the packet and opened it. It contained a single photograph—a picture of Mia taken moments before at the banquet, with Victor standing right behind her, his gaze glaring at her. As Mia gazed at the picture, her heart stopped. It was an obvious message. Four words were written beneath the picture in a hurried, nearly unreadable hand: "She's next." After you. Alexander's gaze hardened, rage and protectiveness boiling just beyond the surface as the full weight of Victor's warning hit him. With a deadly calm in his voice, he said, "Mia, we have to stop him." "Prior to it being too late."
