The Forbidden Path

600 Words
The forest was alive with the aftermath of the battle, the air thick with the scent of blood and the earthy tang of overturned soil.Leo stood over the defeated beast, his silver fur matted with sweat and blood, his breaths coming in ragged gasps.Princess Lia watched him,her heart pounding in her chest,a mix of fear and fascination warring within her. Leo's transformation back to his human form was slow and pained, his body contorting as the moonlight seemed to withdraw into his skin. When the change was complete,he stood before her,a young man with tousled hair and eyes that held the same silver gleam as before. He was clothed in tattered clothes, evidence of the violent shift he had just undergone. "Princess,"Leo said, his voice rough from the transformation."We should leave this place. It's not safe." Lia nodded, her gaze never leaving his face. She was torn between the royal duty to fear and the human instinct to trust."You saved my life,"she said, her voice barely above a whisper."Why?" Leo looked away, his eyes scanning the dark forest as if expecting more threats."I couldn't just let you be harmed,Princess. It's not in my nature." As they walked, the silence between them grew, filled only with the sounds of the night and their footsteps on the forest floor.Lia's mind raced with questions, but she was hesitant to break the silence.Leo,too, was lost in thought, his mind on the implications of what had just transpired. The path they took was narrow and overgrown,a forgotten trail that wound deeper into the forest. The trees seemed to close in around them, their branches forming a canopy that blotted out the stars. The only light came from the moon, its silver rays filtering through the leaves to cast a ghostly glow on their path. Lia shivered, not from the cold but from the realization of how alone they were. She glanced at Leo,who walked with a silent grace that belied his size. His presence was comforting, and she found herself drawn to him despite the danger he represented. "How did you become a werewolf?"Lia asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Leo's steps faltered for a moment before he continued walking."It's not something I chose,Princess. It's something I was born with." They came to a small clearing, where a stream babbled softly, its surface glittering under the moonlight.Leo motions Lia to wait while he checked the area.He moved with an ease that spoke of long hours spent in the wild, his senses sharp and alert. Satisfied that the area was safe,Leo returned to Lia."We can rest here for a while,"he said, his voice gentle. Lia sat on a large rock by the stream, the coolness of the stone seeping through her dress.Leo settled a few feet away, his back against a tree, his gaze never leaving the surrounding forest. "Why were you in the forest,Princess?"Leo asked, his curiosity piqued. Lia hesitated, then decided to trust him."I was escaping an arranged marriage,"she confessed, her voice filled with a desperation that she had kept hidden for so long. Leo's eyes widened in surprise."You were running away?" Lia nodded,a small smile playing on her lips."I wanted to choose my own path, not have it dictated to me." They talked late into the night, sharing stories and finding common ground in their desire for freedom and control over their own destinies. The moon moved across the sky,its light shifting as it sank lower, casting long shadows across the clearing. As the first light of dawn began to touch the horizon,Leo stood."We should go,Princess. The forest is less safe in the daylight without cover." Lia rose, her body stiff from sitting on the cold ground. She looked at Leo,her heart filled with a newfound respect and a strange sense of belonging."Thank you,Leo,"she said, her voice sincere."For everything." Leo nodded,a small smile on his face."Let's go home,Princess."
