Chapter4

The library was empty. Except for us, only two or three students were there. The silence made me more nervous and I wonder if he was nervous too. "Name? I began to ask in a low voice. "Lawrence Lopez." "Age? "19" "Address?" "Is this all your questions?" He said, irritated "I need general info" I answered. " House #32, Forestville. "You're the one moving to the mansion?" "It's not a mansion, it's just a big house." "A mansion is a big house." I said matter of fact. He glared at me. We continued the banter, I mean the interview, with him judging my every question. "So, why did you move here? He sat upright, "It's personal" I waited, and when he realized I was waiting for an answer, he exhaled,"My dad wanted to" "Why?" "He loves it here." I leaned back on the seat, I noticed he was uncomfortable with the question, and I thought it was because of his father. "What does your father do?" " I said no personal questions" "Cmon, I could just Google that you know." " then go ahead. " Fine",I said giving up,"then just answer this, what's your ideal type?" "Why do you wanna know?" "I don't wanna know, but the rest of the girls does." He thought for a while before answering,"Someone who would love me for who I am." " That's cliche," " But it's the truth. Not everyone can do that. It takes true love." "I didn't know you were quite the romantic." "What about you?,what's your ideal type." I rolled my eyes at him, "I'm the interviewer. You don't get to ask." He smiled. It was the first time I have seen him smile and it looks good on him. I had few more questions and this time he answered them thoughtfully. When he doesn't like the question he would raise his brows, but he'll answer them after a while. The interview wasn't bad , in fairness it was fun. "Last question" I said He checked his watch, "okay" " Why were you late? It caught him off guard, " There was an emergency" "What?" " Pesonal matter". My eyes followed the bruises on his left hand, and he deliberately covered them with his right. "Are we done?" "Yes". He rose from his feet and just walked away. He was obviously hiding something. Something that got to do with his bruises. Maybe he got into a fight, I thought. I cleaned my things and followed him outside. I was just a few steps behind him, but he didn't bother to look back. We walked in silence. When we got outside, he made his way to the parking lot., while I went straight. I was almost at the main gate, when I noticed a group of police officers across the streets. They were talking to someone, an old lady. I recognised her as the owner of the bakeshop few blocks from school. In a town this small, you usually recognise everyone. I was about to move closer to eavesdrop, but a car honk from behind startled me. I looked back and saw a black car. When the windows rolled down, it was Lawrence. "Get in. I'll take you home." I was shocked, "Why?" He shook his head, "just get in" I looked at him and then at his car contemplating if I should accept the offer. "Cmon" I thought about it for a few seconds before getting in. His car was neat and clean. No accessories, no stickers or pictures, not even a freshener, but it smelled really good. We were quiet on the car, which made me wonder why he offered me a ride if his not gonna talk. Does he feel bad at the thought of me walking home. Probably. " Where to?" I told him the directions. "Thank you by the way." He just nod in response. I gave up in trying to make a conversation. Instead I looked out the window, into the vast forest. The forest seemed peaceful. The trees were swaying lightly while I noticed little rain drops falling. I was busy staring at the trees that I didn't realized we already arrived. "Thank you again." I said "You're welcome." I got out of the car, and waited for his car to be gone in sight before entering the house. When I entered, Toby was waiting at the living room. "You won't guess what has happened." He excitedly said. "What?" "There's a monster in town." I knelt down to look at him straight at the eyes. "What do you mean, monster?" " Someone saw a monster at the..." "Toby" it was mom who emerged from the dining area. "I'm telling her about the monster." "There is no monster" my mom said sweetly. "But I heard dad talking to Tito Jes," "That what you get for eavesdropping. Now, why don't you finish your homework." Toby look sad but immediately obliged. I followed mom to the dinning table where she was already preparing dinner. "What's going on? What monster is he talking about?" "Well, that was nothing. Go upstairs now and freshen up, well be having dinner soon." I didn't believe her, but I followed anyways. I went upstairs and took a bath. All the time thinking about what Toby said. At dinner, Toby didn't say anything more, he has obviously been reprimanded already. But something about what dad said when we were finishing up, struck me. He reprimanded us from staying out late, especially me. I asked him why, but he didn't said anything. Back in my room, I got even more curious about the "monster". Is there a serial killer going around? That's scary. Maybe it's just an unfounded news. While I think about the monster my brain suddenly shifted to Lawrence. What was he hiding? Why does he have scars on his hands? Why he doesn't wanna answer questions about his father? I fell asleep thinking about those questions and no surprise I ended up dreaming about him.
