In my dream, we were at the forest. We were seated on the ground while I trace my fingers around his bruises. He was smiling, like the one I saw at the library this afternoon. He held my face with his free hand, carressing, memorising every line. I was happy, like it was exactly where I should be. Lawrence stood up, holding my gaze, until he walked away. I followed him while calling his name. I saw him standing near a huge tree. He disappeared behind the huge tree, and when he came out, he turned into my savior. I watched, stunned. He moved towards me, interchanging between Lawrence and my savior. I tried to reach forward. But...
I woke up, panting. That was a wild dream. I thought about Lawrence and my savior. Seeing them both in my dream was weird.. I got out of bed and went outside. My dad was on the phone with my mom beside him. I overheard some of their conversation,
"There was a sighting again" it was my dad. " What's going on? Why is this happening again?"
I moved closer. But my mom saw me and she tapped my dad's shoulder as if to tell him I was around. My father ended his conversation and looked at me.
"Come here sweetheart, we have to tell you something."
"Is this about the monster" I said
"There are no monsters" my mom said looking serious.
"Actually, Mrs. Gomez, the owner of the bake shop, saw something at the forest."
Since the time I got lost at the forest, my parents have been careful bringing out the topic or anything related, thinking it might trigger my trauma. But they don't know I have been wanting to go back.
"What did she see?
"I don't really know. But word came out, and suddenly they started calling it a monster."
"It's probably just a wild animal." My mom said.
"But whatever it is, better to stay out of the forest. Okay sweetie?"
"Yes, dad".
We didn't talk about the "monster" again, but it was all I could think about whole day. What did Mrs. Gomez see? Was it the same as mine? Was it my savior? There were so many questions in my head and I needed answers. My dad won't talk about it anymore. And so is my mom. I wonder if Darren knows something, if his dad had told him anything.
"I don't know anything." It was minutes before our first class together and I immediately asked Darren what he knows. The whole school was talking about it. Some were scared, some don't believe it, others think it is just a prank or joke.
"What did your dad say? I asked again.
"He wouldn't go into details but he said they'll get to the bottom of it."
I was disappointed. I was hoping Darren could shed light to the whole thing, but apparently everyone is secretive about it, which I kinda understand. The teacher walked in and I shove those"monster" thought away. Only then did I realized Lawrence wasn't in class. Where is he? I thought. Has this something to do with those bruises. Did he go to the hospital? I shook my head. I shouldn't be looking to much into it. He probably just wanted to skip class.
My morning class went on. It was dragging and boring. I found myself doodling on my notebook, but when I noticed I drew an animal looking like the one I saw years ago, I immediately closed my notes. I really should know what Mrs Gomes saw and I know exactly how I would it.
"Hi, Mrs. Gomez" I greeted her warmly.
"Oh hello dear."
It was lunchtime. And I lied to Darren that I needed to go home because I forget my assignment for my philosophy class. In reality, I just really wanted to talk to Mrs. Gomez.
"How's your mom?" She knows my mom and she recognizer me as my mom's daughter. Well everyone does. I'm typically known as Anabelle's daughter.
"She's doing fine." I drummed my fingers on the counter, figuring out how to broach the subject.
"I'm glad she's doing fine, she continued to say, she's a great help to this community."
I smiled, "That's sweet of you".
"I'm just telling the truth, and I always say the truth." I took that as my cue.
"Not everyone thinks that though." I lowered my voice. "Some think you were lying about what you saw at the forest."
She glared, obviously mad."How dare they? Why would I lie? I'm still even scared up to now. I still remember that. monster clearly on my head."
"What does it look like Mrs. Gomez?
She paused, and for a while I thought she wouldn't respond.
"It looks scary. It was black and hairy. And it's eyes, it looked like it was ready to kill." She shrugged. Obviously traumatised by what she saw. And I felt guilty for having her describe it again. "I shouldn't be talking about it. I already told the police what I saw. If no one believes me,then that's not my problem anymore "
"Of course." And that was our last conversation about the "monster". But , I didn't realize she has a lot of other stories to tell. She talked about my mom when she was young. How she was so popular. And how she had a boyfriend who looked so good, she thought my mom would end up with him. I almost got late on my next class, that I needed to run to arrive in time.
During class, I remembered what Mrs. Gomez said. She was obviously talking about the creature that I saw before my savior came. So that means it's back, and that could also mean my savior is back. My heart raced at the thought. I have to know. I have to see for myself. And the only way, is to be at the forest.
