Anna's pov
My eyes traveled to the door for the umpteenth time, then drifted over to the wall clock. Where was he? He saw me and told me he was going somewhere to have supper and it's been 3 hours now. The sun has set and there was still no sight of him.
He wasn't answering my calls either.
This wasn't like him, even though he was still uncomfortable around me, we at least called each other. He’d sit at the table while I cooked, would expertly handle the laundry while I vacuumed and whenever we were both around, we would always share a meal. It was strange how naturally we coexisted together, like it was meant to be.
I shook those thoughts out of my head instantly, grabbing my phone until my knuckles grew white.
“This is all to further my revenge, I'll reap the fruits when he becomes the alpha King and–”
I was mumbling under my breath until the door suddenly opened and I stood up to my feet in an instant, walking over so quickly that I was standing in front of him by the time the door was fully open, arms crossed.
“Where have you been? I've been calling…you could have at least sent me a text or something, you know?”
He grunted something beneath his breath, then held my arms by the side, gently maneuvering me out of his path before walking towards the couch and crashing down like falling bricks.
“Give me a moment,” he said through an exhausted sigh, guilt pricked at my skin. The poor man looked like he had the weight of the whole world on his firm shoulders and was trying not to collapse.
“I baked some cookies,” I said loud enough for his hearing as I walked past and went to the kitchen, coming back with a plate that held a ton of chocolate cookies.
His lips moved to let out an appreciative mumble, then he reached out for a cookie without looking and I handed him one. He chewed away at the cookie like it was the last meal he was going to have before suddenly taking a deep breath and sitting up.
“I met with the Alpha, said he wanted to see me.”
My appetite died away and I placed the plate of cookies aside on the coffee table.
“Why?” I tried to bury the tone of worry deep inside my voice but it slipped through some cracks and Lucas caught on to it.
“He said he wanted to give me a promotion,”
Relief found its way into my heart and I placed my hand on my chest.
“Oh, that's a good thing then…why did you have to–”
“My new job is being his son's bodyguard,” it took a moment or two for this little bit of information to truly sink into my mind.
“What? No–He did what?! And what did you say?” I asked him desperately, hoping that he did the opposite of what I expected but he ended up confirming my fears.
“It was a direct order from the Alpha, so of course all I could say was yes,” I brushed my palm over my face at his down to earth answer. I couldn't really blame him. Coming from the Alpha, it was less of a job promotion and more of an order, he couldn't refuse even if he wanted to but still–
“Let me talk to the Alpha, I–”
“No,” he said without anger or annoyance, just calmly and straightforwardly.
“I don't want you to do that,”
But I was pissed and stubborn. That darn Ray! He already had a dozen personal guards assigned specially to him, what did he need one more for?! This wasn't just at Lucas, it was aimed right at me and I couldn't take It lying down.
I got up, gave my outfit a once over to see if I could be spotted in public wearing it, then started stomping over to the door. Just as I reached out for the door handle, I was suddenly lifted off my feet, as light as a feather. My legs dangled several inches above the ground as I fought over my surprise to speak.
“Lucas, what are you doing?”
“Stopping you from throwing a tantrum…”
“T-tantrum me?! What do you take me for? A pup?! Put me down this instant!”
“No.”
“NO?”
His next response was to turn me around and throw me over his shoulders like a sack of potatoes, taking me upstairs to the bedroom that he had not set foot in ever since I moved into this house. I wasn't going to make it easy for him even though I knew I couldn't overpower him. I made sure to kick and scream every step he took. Finally, he plopped me down on the bed and sighed; “Oh my goddess! Are you drunk or…?”
He brought his face close enough so that he could sniff to either confirm or deny his suspicion. It should have only taken a moment or two to measure my alcohol intake if there had been any but strangely enough, he didn't budge, remaining fixed to the spot.
“I-i didn't drink,” I told him as the room suddenly grew hotter for some reason, he didn't pull away, just came closer in the blink of an eye his nose was pressed against the crook of my neck. I fell back on the bed but his touch followed.
I gulped, I had been careless. Mates naturally give off pheromones that send each other crazy and in a blurry haze to mate.
I've never had to worry about that ever since I came under this roof because Lucas had avoided physical touch with me like I was the plague or something. When he grabbed me earlier, I had tried to use anger to cover up the sudden shiver that slid across my skin as his calloused hands brushed my tummy, trying to hold me to his broad chest.
My body wanted him, my wolf had been crying out for him and now…
Now he had me.
