Chapter 8 - Engaged

I was almost left gaping and standing from my seat after hearing what Isles said. What did he just say? He wants me to live with him? Wait a second! That wasn't part of the agreement we made! "What did you just say, Isles?!" He looked up at me without even moving from his seat. I forgot that I didn't really know this man. I don't know how he plays or pulls tricks. We hadn't even started yet, and he had already outplayed me! How dare he! He proposed a deal to me, and I agreed! Then it turns out this was the condition he wanted? I looked at Dad, laughing sarcastically and nervously. "Dad! That can't be..." Before I could finish, Dad let out a sigh. He looked at Isles, and my jaw nearly dropped when he simply nodded. What kind of magic did this guy use on him for him to agree to something like that! "It's up to you, Mr. Privello. Besides, it's favorable for me. I can finally get rid of another headache in my house," Dad replied as he continued eating. I looked at Mom for help, but she only looked away. I stared at them in disbelief before letting out a laugh and shaking my head. They're all the same. None of them care about me or how I feel. What they want is all that matters! My eyes met Isles's. He seemed amused watching my reaction while I glared at him angrily. I didn't know he'd pull this trick on me! I never saw it coming. Especially now that the engagement had already been announced and there was already a ring on my finger! As much as I wanted to say something, I held myself back. I clenched my fists to stop them from trembling. I felt like they were all ganging up on me, and there was nothing I could do. I had no one on my side. No one wanted to understand how I felt. Dad and Mom were already leaving, but I still couldn't say a word. It felt like no matter what I said, it would be wrong. "We'll head ahead, hijo. Please take care of Nathalia," Mom said as she stroked my hair and gently patted my shoulder. I didn't even know how I managed to force a smile at her. Dad looked at me, still disappointed, but he was clearly throwing me out of his house now. Just as he had said, it was favorable for him. "Take care, Dr. Sandoval," Isles said goodbye as Dad got into the car and the door closed. I had no choice but to watch their car drive away. When it finally disappeared from sight, I looked back at Isles. He was already looking at me. I gritted my teeth in anger. My hands were trembling too, but I hid it all from him. I am tired of his insults and of looking pitiful in front of him. "Shall we go?" he asked emotionlessly, not even bothering to explain what he had said earlier. Instead of following him, I walked straight past him. I tried to push his hands away from me, but it didn't work. Isles blocked my way, so I glared at him. "I'm going home. I still have a lot of things to do." "You'll come with me," he ordered. I looked at him irritably. With the strong wind blowing strands of my hair and the cold air brushing against my skin, he should be the one getting chills from what he wanted to happen and from what he had said earlier! "I said I'm going home." "Yes, you are. We'll go home," he said as if he couldn't care less. He's really unbelievable. He's deliberately provoking me, and I don't like it! "You know what? You can't be trusted," I said, unable to hold back any longer as I faced him. "I don't know why I believed you and agreed to your deal!" He refused to move out of my way, so I did what I had to do! I shoved him in the chest so I could storm off, but he simply caught my wrist. "Then why are you walking away? Why don't you wait for my explanation?" "Explanation?! I don't need your explanation! That's enough for me to know that all you wanted was to fool me and play with me! Is this your revenge for the mistake I made?" I asked bluntly. I don't want to play his dirty game like this! "I could still talk to Dad. I could beg him! You shouldn't have shown up today. Maybe there was still another way." "What's the problem? We made a deal. We already agreed," he said firmly. I shook his hand off my wrist. I arched my brows and glared at him. "We agreed to accept the engagement so this would all be over. That we'd pretend we're on good terms! But you never mentioned that your condition was for me to live with you!" Isles let out a sigh. He looked away for a moment before looking back at me seriously. "You don't know how serious this is? Do you think we're just playing games, Nathalia? You know what? I'm starting to think I know your father better than you do," he said seriously. I laughed sarcastically. I really couldn't believe him. "And now you're claiming you know Daddy better than I do? Who do you think you are?" I sighed and tried to calm myself down. I didn't want to argue with him anymore. My mind is tired. This will drive me insane! "Forget it. Let's not go through with the deal. I'm not marrying you!" I took off the ring on my finger that was only for show and shoved it against his chest. "Let's never see each other again, Mr. Privello!" His jaw clenched, and his hand refused to let me go. I froze when he pulled me closer, our clashing gazes locking. "What's the problem? We'll just be living in the same house. It doesn't mean we'll do what married couples do," he said with knitted brows and a deeply furrowed forehead. My eyes widened. What?! And he had the nerve to say that? "Then why do we need to do that? Why do we even have to live together? A-And why did you say that in front of them?" He sighed, clearly annoyed. He was the one acting tired and irritated even though he was the mastermind behind all of this! He was the one making everything complicated. "Your father approved it. I'm saving you too. Don't you want that? You'll finally be free from your father." I stared at him for a long time. In my eyes, he looked like a devil trying to lure me in. He knew exactly what I needed, and he knew exactly where I was easiest to trip. "Tell me the truth. What do you need from me? And why are we going to live in the same house? It's obvious that you tricked me. You never mentioned that earlier when we were talking! You only said it after everything was over." "You said it yourself. It's over. Your father allowed it." "But that doesn't change the fact that you tricked me! I thought we had a fair agreement, but what... what are you doing?!" Before I could even finish speaking, he suddenly lifted me up, making me scream. He lifted me off the ground and threw me over his shoulder like a sack. I hit his back and kicked the air. How dare he! This is kidnapping! I can sue him for this! "Isles! Put me down or I will put you in jail, you fucker!" I screamed. "I'll put you down later. In bed," was all he said as he carried me to his car. My eyes widened. I flailed in the air, but he refused to let me go. "This is kidnapping! You're kidnapping me! I'll have you thrown in jail!" "Even if you handcuff me, Nathalia." Shit! He's so annoying! So annoying! We were already on the road, heading to wherever he came from. Wherever he lived. Or wherever that house he was talking about was! "Why now? Couldn't it be tomorrow or in a few months? Why are you rushing this?" I asked accusingly while he kept his eyes on the road. I couldn't stop looking around. What if he was taking me somewhere else? How was I supposed to know what he wanted from me? At first, he couldn't stand the sight of me, and now he was the one saying we'd live under the same roof? "Why won't you answer me? What's the real reason you're doing this?" I kept asking even though I was already distracting him while he drove. "Stop it, Nathalia. We're going to crash if you keep doing that," he said calmly, but I refused to back down. "I'll snatch that steering wheel if you don't tell me!" I threatened, leaning even closer to him. He glanced at me, and despite the anger and irritation in my eyes, I still froze for a moment. Now, what is he looking at? "If you don't stop, I'll pull over," he warned firmly. We were already on a quiet road. It was nighttime too, and I had no idea where we were! "And then what? Are you going to throw me into a river? And make it look like I've been kidnapped by our family's enemies, or that I've gone missing because I tried to run away from this engagement!" He shook his head, clearly running out of patience. Just as he said, he suddenly pulled the car over to the side of the road. I thought he was getting out, but instead he rested one hand on the headrest of the passenger seat and turned to face me. "W-What are you doing?" I asked. He leaned even closer and placed his hand on the dashboard, trapping me between his arms. "I-Isles!" He answered with a smirk. His eyes were just absurdly... hypnotic. "If you don't stop that filthy little mouth of yours, I won't have any choice but to silence it the way I know how." We were only a few inches apart. Just a little closer, and if he didn't pull back, our lips would meet. "I-I hate you," I said with resentment. He stared at me. As his smile disappeared, his eyes turned serious and his gaze grew cold. He slowly pulled away without taking his eyes off me. "Don't worry, Miss Nathalia," he said. "The feeling is very much mutual." I took a deep breath and looked away. I needed to know what he wanted from me. And I would not stop until I got that information. I straightened in my seat. I fixed myself. "Why can't you just let me go?" I asked, trying to hold myself together. "I want to go home. Let me go home!" "We're going home. Relax over there and stop shouting. Why don't you save your energy for something more important?"
