Amelia stepped out of the examination room, her hands instinctively resting on her abdomen, her mind a whirl of disbelief.
Pregnant? From just that one encounter? How could it be?
Memories of that night's intense moments flooded back, coloring her cheeks with a flush.
Yet, worry quickly overshadowed her brief moment of reminiscence. She adored children, but the timing of her pregnancy couldn't be more inopportune.
Just when she had managed to secure a spot within the Kingsley family, the revelation of her pregnancy would surely drive Clay to get rid of her.
With a heavy heart, Amelia made her way to the reception desk of the obstetrics and gynecology department to inquire about an appointment.
Just then, she overheard a familiar voice. Marn was on the phone, saying, "Mr. Kingsley, I've gathered the documents. I'll bring them over now!"
She swiftly ducked behind a pillar, thankfully unnoticed by Marn, who hurried deeper into the hospital.
Curiosity got the better of her, and Amelia stealthily followed.
Inside the room, Marn handed over a folder to Clay. "Sir, here's the patients' information for the last two months."
Clay flipped through the papers before discarding them aside impatiently. "None of these are right."
"That was quick... Are you sure you've seen everything clearly?" Marn asked.
Clay shot him a withering glance. "Do you really think I need instructions on how to do my job?"
"But we've checked every hospital already. Smaller clinics can't perform these kinds of tests..." Marn scratched his head and then suddenly remembered something. "I see! What about those who've booked but haven't yet been seen?"
Amelia breathed a sigh of relief for not having made an appointment. Or else, she'd have been discovered by Clay for sure.
Amelia wondered who Clay was trying to find, but it seemed to be a pregnant woman...
The pieces clicked together in Amelia's mind, but her train of thought was abruptly interrupted by her phone's ringtone echoing through the silent hallway.
Frantically, she fumbled to silence it, but it was too late.
The door swung open, and a pair of polished shoes entered her sight.
"Ms. Hugh, what brings you here?" Marn asked, surprised.
Forced to confront the situation, Amelia straightened up. "I... I came to see a doctor."
Clay's skeptical gaze made it clear he wasn't convinced, his voice laced with mockery. "Was it my grandpa or Mars who sent you here to spy on me?"
"It's just..." Amelia stammered, seizing the moment Marn's attention was diverted to make a break for it.
"Catch her!" Clay's command rang out.
Panic sent Amelia darting forward, but only a few steps later, darkness encroached on her vision, her legs gave way, and she nearly collapsed.
Marn caught up and steadied Amelia, who had now fainted, and looked back at Clay helplessly.
Sitting in his wheelchair, Clay barked, "What are you waiting for? Get a doctor!"
In the ward, as Amelia's eyes fluttered open, she found her energy gradually returning.
However, nervousness kept surrounding her like a cage.
Clay was sitting by her bed, cold and ominous as ever. Out of fear, Amelia was too scared to make a move.
Then, Marn handed over a medical report, which made her sit up in shock.
"You're pregnant?" Clay inquired emotionlessly.
Drained of color, Amelia fought to maintain composure.
"Yes, but I only found out today myself."
Under Clay's scrutinizing gaze, Amelia felt a chill run down her spine.
"So, what's your plan? Tell your grandfather about it and have me thrown out?" She looked at him warily.
With a smirk, Clay asked, "What else?"
He wheeled himself aside, not willing to look at Amelia any longer.
"I'm hardly inclined to harbor a woman carrying another man's child."
Amelia caught her breath, her fingers digging into her palms.
"No, Clay, you can't do this to me!" Amelia's tears threatened to break through, yet she swallowed them back. "I don't even know who the father is. This isn't fair to me!"
"Fair? You're my wife, but now you're carrying another man's child!" Clay turned, his gaze dark and ominous.
Amelia's voice trembled, but she quickly composed herself, wiping away a tear. "Just tell me what I need to do to stay."
Clay observed her, the stubborn fire in her eyes igniting something unexpected within him.
"How dare you even ask? You shameless woman!" His stare remained frosty.
Amelia steadied her breathing, seeking a compromise. "Clay, please, let me stay. I can help you gain a foothold in your family!"
At that moment, Clay looked at her in surprise.
Amelia continued, "You need me. I'll be a decent wife!"
Clay looked away, his expression unreadable. After a while of silence, he signaled Marn to wheel him away.
"Clay!" Amelia tried to stop him.
Marn paused, and Amelia stared at Clay's back, yearning for him to change his mind.
"You have three days to deal with this child. Then you can stay."
Clay then left without another glance.
Amelia froze, her world spinning. She desperately wanted to keep the baby, but Clay was giving her no choice.
Her phone rang again. It was Jenny.
Clutching it helplessly, Amelia answered and sobbed, "Jenny, I'm at the hospital. I'm pregnant."
"Oh my, Amelia! That was quick! Congratulations!" Jenny's voice bubbled with excitement.
Jenny's blessing only made Amelia tremble. She said, "It's not like that. The baby's father isn't Clay."
