Jack
I managed to avoid Lucy's questions about her parents. She fell back into sleep before she could argue further, which gives me time to figure out how I am going to explain things to her. The problem is, I dont have all the answers myself. It's like we are in some kind of endless trap that we can not escape from. Are we trapped inside some alternate universe that is preventing us from reaching our Destiny? Just the thought of it sounds crazy.
As far as I know, I am a Vampire and Lucy in this lifetime is Lucky Lucy, the courageous Pirate Captain who leads her faithful crew on adventures for gold and plunder. Well, I'm hoping it's gold and plunder, because it really does sound pretty cool. I don't know who Lucy's parents are or who my parents are. I just know that the Captain that raised her is not her father but sort of like a projection of a person and I'm assuming that the projection is coming from her true parents somehow.
Maybe they have special powers or something. I don't know this all sounds stupid and ridiculous. In all the years, Lucy and I have been going in circles with this life and death cycle. We have never come one step closer to finding out the truth about either Lucy or myself.
I dont remember anything about my life before the age of twelve. I just woke up one day as a fully grown child alone by a river. I remember waking up to the sound of howling, so I ran in the opposite direction. That's where I met Lucy for the first time in the woods with the sounds of wolves and wind circling around us. I felt immediately drawn to her like Fate had pushed us together. Lucy had also woken up alone, she was lost and afraid, so from that moment on we cared for each other.
That first lifetime was beautiful. We lived, loved and then, eventually, Lucy became old and died, but I didn't. I kept living and kept meeting Lucy and kept living lifetimes with her over and over.
There were some lifetimes that were awful where Lucy was hunted down, persecuted, executed, murdered and even tortured. It wasn't all love and romance, some of it was traumatic and painful. Some of it I would do anything to forget.
I'm glad Lucy doesn't remember, because I don't think she would be able to cope with knowing everything that has happened in all those lifetimes. I think its better not to tell her everything either, I want to protect her and she doesn't need to know all those awful things. It will only hurt her more. I pray to Destiny that maybe in this lifetime Lucy can find peace.
Why do we pray to Destiny anyway? Is destiny a God or just a concept? Everyone is always praying to Destiny, but you never hear anyone praying to Fate or Chance or Luck. They sound like they could be Gods too. In any case, it's probably just a saying and doesn't mean anything at all.
The other thing I don't understand is, if I am a Vampire, then why doesn't the sun affect me and why don't I feel the urge to drink blood? The closest I've come to drinking blood is eating freshly hunted deer. Nothing really adds up. Maybe when Lucy wakes up we can figure some things out. Maybe in this lifetime we can finally find out the truth.
But for now there was no peace to be had. Right now was the time to find answers, they needed to figure this all out and figure out how to escape this endless cycle. There had to be more to it, all he could remember was that it had always been just him and Lucy, he never met any other Vampires or supernatural beings.
Everyone just always seemed lost all the time, they had never clearly seen the sun, there always seemed to be a gloom that distorted everything all the time.
Sometimes he wondered if he was already dead, maybe they were caught in some endless penance for a sin that they no longer remembered. Maybe it was time to start asking questions. Surely there was someone who knew them or something about them that could give them the answers they were looking for. He couldn't possibly be the only Vampire in existence and also he didn't remember anything from before he was twelve, so that means he must have been someone else before.
Lucy
When I awoke, it was dark but it still felt like early evening. I sit up. Most of the pain in my head and body had subsided and now I just felt incredibly hungry and a little cold. I looked around the dimly lit room and noticed a fireplace. I get up out of bed and set some logs and then try to light them. With a little persitance, they finally catch alight and I sit and enjoy the crackling flames and the warm glow that radiates over me. It's so nice and warm, I start to feel relaxed and I feel the stress of recent events dissolve in my mind for a moment.
Then reality hits me. I'm in a strange room that I've never seen before. I have no idea where I am, where my ship is or where my crew is. Suddenly, as if sensing my panic, Jack burst into the room. 'Lucy, are you ok? I sensed you were awake from the next room' Jack sounded flustered and concerned but appeared calm and in control. 'I'm ok Jack, I'm just confused. Where is the ship and the crew? How long have I been asleep?' Lucy asked him calmly, almost unconcerned, Jack's presence had a way of making me feel safe.
'Oh the ship, I asked the crew to take it back to harbour. It took a significant amount of convincing seeing as the crew didn't remember me as much as I thought they would after restoring their memories. In fact, Pete and Harry would have near killed me had I been mortal.' Jack seemed perplexed.
This was unusual for Jack. He was always so calm, almost detached. From the memories that had been revealed to Lucy she couldn't remember a single time she had ever seen Jack this nervous. 'Jack? Are you ok? You seem unusually restless. Is there something you are worried about?' her voice was gentle and sincere.
Jack sighed. It felt so good to have Lucy back. He felt whole and complete. His concern was how long it would last? Would they get closer to finding out the truth about who they are? 'I'm ok' he muttered quietly 'I just missed you it wasn't easy to be away all this time'. Lucy studied his face.
She detected the lie but did not press him further. She knew better than to push him for answers. Jack was always full of secrets. Maybe it was his way of protecting her or maybe there was a truth he just didn't want to face. But just because she knew not to push Jack for answers didn't mean that she couldn't search for answers herself, she just needed an excuse, a reason to have time alone so she could explore and maybe figure out a few things.
Maybe if she had more information then Jack might be willing to talk about things and give more information about what was going on because, up until a few days ago, all she knew was she was the daughter of a pirate destined for boundless adventures and now she was practically no one. If her whole life so far had been a lie, then what was it all for and how come she couldn't remember everything?
She remembered lifetimes of memories but they were missing large pieces of time, also none of the memories occurred before the age of thirteen. Were these memories even real or were they all fake? Was Jack really her companion or was that also a lie? What to believe in proved to be an impossible question. There was no answer. There was no way to figure out what was real with the information she had. The only way was to find out more information and she wasn't getting that information from Jack, so it was time to figure it out for herself, but where to start?
The only place is where this all started on the ship and the crew. Certainly they have something to say about things. Maybe there was a clue or information hidden somewhere in the ship that would lead her to the answers she was looking for. Then she would be able to find out who she and Jack really were.
Well, at least she wasn't bored anymore and would finally have the adventure she had been craving. A shiver of excitement ran through her body, she felt as though her life was just beginning and it was it sort of was. For the first time she felt like she was her own person, she had a sense of freedom and independence she hadn't experienced before. She just wished that she didn't need to go behind Jack's back, but it was too important to ignore.
She had to find out the truth. It might be her only chance to do so.
