Ayana stared at herself in the mirror, unsure if it was really her.
The black satin dress hugged her curves like it was sewn from a dream. Her makeup was light but flawless thanks to Ethan’s personal stylist who had appeared with a team that morning, calling her "Mrs. Carter" like it was the most natural thing in the world.
But nothing about tonight felt natural.
“Ayana, you ready?” Ethan’s voice echoed from outside the dressing room.
She took a deep breath. “As I’ll ever be.”
When she stepped out, Ethan’s eyes widened for a brief moment. It was quick almost unnoticeable but Ayana caught it. The way his jaw tightened. The way he momentarily forgot how to breathe.
“You look...” he began, but words failed him. “Beautiful.”
Ayana’s lips curled into a small smile. “So do you,” she teased, glancing at his tuxedo.
He offered his arm. “Shall we?”
The venue was a five-star hotel, dripping in gold and chandeliers. The dinner was being hosted by one of Ethan’s biggest investors, Mr. Caldwell a man with sharp eyes and an even sharper memory.
“This is my wife, Ayana,” Ethan introduced her with a smile so convincing, even she believed it.
Ayana forced her lips into a gracious smile. “It’s an honor.”
Caldwell raised a brow. “Wife? That’s a surprise. You’ve always been so... private.”
Ethan chuckled. “Some things are worth keeping secret.”
The evening went smoothly at first. Ayana stuck to short answers, polite laughs, and quiet sips of water. She let Ethan lead. It was his world, after all.
But when Caldwell’s wife leaned in and asked, “How did you two meet?” Ayana froze.
Ethan’s hand gently touched her back under the table reassurance
“We met in the most unexpected way,” she said, voice steady. “I was there for him at a time he needed someone. And now... here we are.”
It wasn’t a lie. Not entirely. Just edited.
Ethan looked at her, visibly impressed.
When the dinner ended, the two returned to the car in silence. The soft hum of the engine was the only sound between them.
“You did well tonight,” Ethan finally said.
She sighed. “I was terrified.”
He glanced at her. “You didn’t show it.”
Ayana looked out the window. “This world… it’s not mine, Ethan. I’m just pretending.”
His voice softened. “We both are.”
There was a pause.
“Do you ever get tired of pretending?” she asked.
Ethan’s jaw clenched. “Every day.”
Their eyes met in the reflection of the tinted glass two people, pretending in public… but starting to reveal the truth in private.
Ayana wasn’t sure how long this act could go on.
Because the more real it felt, the harder it would be to walk away.
And she could already feel herself falling.
