Ayana sat curled up on the leather couch, one of Ethan’s silk robes draped over her shoulders. The city lights flickered through the tall glass windows of the penthouse, casting golden shadows across the floor. It was silent. Peaceful. For once, her mind wasn’t racing not about work, bills, or broken trust.
Then her phone buzzed.
One message.
Zara ❤️
> “Sis… where are you? Don’t tell me you’re with HIM again. The one from Carter something. NairobiGossip just dropped a photo. Tell me it’s not you.”
Ayana’s heart jumped. She stared at the screen like it might disappear if she blinked.
Another buzz.
> “You're trending, Ayana. Congratulations or condolences?”
She almost dropped the phone.
Ethan walked out of the bedroom, a towel draped around his neck. “Everything okay?” he asked, his voice still thick from the shower.
Ayana nodded too quickly. “Yeah… just Zara.”
He tilted his head slightly. “Is she alright?”
She gave a half-smile. “She’s being… Zara.”
But deep down, panic rose in her chest. If Zara had seen the gossip blogs, that meant the story was spreading. Ethan had warned her this would happen "Once you step into my world, you don’t get to leave quietly," he’d once said.
Ayana locked her phone and tried to pretend the world wasn’t watching her through a screen.
