Three hours earlier…
Zara Mwende sat in the back row of her economics class, legs crossed, nails tapping rhythmically on her desk. She wore oversized sunglasses indoors not for fashion, but to hide the puffiness around her eyes from a restless night. She hadn’t told anyone, not even her roommate, that she hadn’t slept. Her mind had been buzzing ever since she’d seen the cryptic stories from gossip pages the night before.
She told herself she wouldn’t check again.
That she was being paranoid.
But curiosity won.
She unlocked her phone, scrolled to i********:, and tapped on a trending reel. The video was shaky, probably taken from a distance with a phone camera, but the caption was loud and clear:
> “BREAKING: Billionaire Ethan Carter seen entering The Haven Hotel with mystery woman. 👀 Who is she? #EthanCarter #MysteryGirl”
Zara leaned in, frowning.
A silver sports car pulled up in front of the luxurious hotel.
The camera zoomed in slowly.
And then she saw her.
A woman stepped out, hair in a high puff, soft brown curls catching the light. Same gold hoop earrings Ayana always wore. The way she walked confident, head held high. Then the camera caught Ethan Carter, unmistakable in a tailored suit, placing his hand gently on the small of her back.
Zara’s heart dropped.
It was Ayana.
The comment section was already exploding.
> “Ayana Mwende?? I know her from Westlands!”
“Salon girl turned billionaire’s girl? Levels 😮🔥”
“Sis upgraded QUICK. Respect.”
She blinked rapidly, scrolling faster. Her thumb hovered over the “send message” button. Instead, she opened w******p.
Zara: Aya? What’s going on?
Zara: Is this true? You and him?
Zara: Why didn’t you tell me?
The ticks stayed grey.
No response.
Her stomach twisted as a hot wave of emotion crashed into her. Betrayal. Anger. Sadness. But the most overwhelming of all… jealousy.
It wasn’t just about Ethan.
It was about being left out.
About always being the one in the background.
About Ayana always shining while she struggled just to feel seen.
She stormed out of class halfway through, her professor calling after her but she didn’t look back. She needed air. She needed answers.
Zara sat under a tree near the student center, watching couples walk by, laughing and holding hands. She used to dream of a love like that. Of finding someone who would protect her, choose her.
Instead, she'd ended up in a mess she couldn’t even talk about with a man who promised her the world but left her heart in ruins. Ayana didn’t know the full story. No one did.
She opened i********: again.
This time, not to check Ethan’s photos.
But to read every word people were saying about her sister.
> “She’s too pretty to be a side piece. Hope she knows what she’s doing.”
“Billionaires don’t do forever, only fun.”
Zara bit her lip. Her fingers hovered over the screen. She wasn’t going to watch this happen silently. If Ayana was walking into a trap, she’d drag her out if she had to.
But deep down, a dangerous voice whispered...
Or maybe you just want to be the one in the spotlight for once.
