Maisie looked around the room. Her heart was racing. She had made it into the clan. She was both relieved and scared at the same time. The Alpha did not seem to believe her story, although he did not throw her out of the castle gates. His Luna seemed to be a sympathetic woman. Maisie made a mental note that she might be able to lean on that later.
It was the Alpha's twin that worried her. Liam. When he had walked her upstairs to the room, she had been surrounded by the smell of the forest. The scent of pine had surrounded her. It brought her comfort and helped to calm her racing heart. Even if just for a moment. The feeling had surprised her. She was unsure what that could mean. Maisie rubbed her hands together. She had also had a strange sensation shoot up her arm when she had touched him. It was a faint tingling feeling. It had started in her fingers and then her whole hand. Maisie shook her head. She could not allow herself to get distracted. She needed to start thinking about how she was going to get the Alpha to Kai.
Kai Maclean, Alpha to the Maclean Clan. Kai had taken control over Clan MacLeod when Duncan had been killed at the Alpha counsel meeting. Maisie had been told the story by her parents. They had told her that the way that they lived had not always been so. Her parents had told her stories of being under Alasdair MacLeod's rule. He expected his warriors to be ruthless, but was not unfair in his treatment of his pack.
When Aladair had been murdered by his son, Duncan, his parents had worried about their clan. However, Duncan's rule was short-lived as he was too consumed by being wronged by the Douglas Clan. He had gone to a Alpha counsel meeting and lost control. He had been put down because of it.
After Duncan was no longer able to rule Clan MacLeod, his cousin, Kai Maclean, took over the clan. He absolved it into his own clan. Maisie's father was one of Kai's warriors for many years. Up until her parent's death a few years prior. Maisie had not lied. Her parents had died in a fire, but Maisie was not the only one who was left behind. Her younger sister, Amelia, was only eleven years old.
Kai had been kind enough to take the two girls into the castle. They worked for their living among the servants of the castle. They had never been treated ill until recently. Kai seemed to be agitated more and more. It wasn't until a week ago that he confronted Maisie. He had asked her to meet him in his study. He had a very important task that he needed her for. Maisie hesitated, but did as her Alpha commanded.
Maisie had knocked lightly on the study door. "Come in." She had heard from the other side. Maisie silently pushed the door open. She was surprised to find Amelia standing by the side of his large desk. She looked scared and it made Maisie skeptical of what Kai was going to ask of her.
"Please close the door, Maisie," Alpha Kai had said. Maisie turned around long enough to make sure that the door latched properly. She turned back around. Alpha Kai regarded her intently. Maisie shifted uneasily from one foot to the other.
"I called ye here because I have an assignment for ye." Alpha Kai said as he sat up straighter in his chair. Maisie glanced at her sister in confusion. If the assignment was for her, why was Amelia there? Maisie's stomach began to grow uneasy.
"Yes Alpha?" Maisie asked when Alpha Kai did not continue.
"I need ye to infiltrate the Douglas Clan and get the Alpha to me." Maisie was confused. What did the Alpha have against the leader of the Douglas Clan? Other than was he related to the previous Alpha?
"May I ask why?" Maisie dared to ask. It was very risky to go into another clan's territory. Especially with a hidden agenda.
"I am avenging my cousin, Duncan MacLeod," Alpha Kai had stated as a matter of fact.
"That was some time ago, Alpha." Maisie tried to reason with Alpha Kai. However, rather than see reason, her questioning only angered him.
"I ken how long ago it was. Ye will do as ye are told. If ye refuse there will be consequences," Alpha Kai yelled. Maisie shied away from the Alpha and his anger. Maisie understood now why Amelia was in the study. Alpha Kai would use her little sister as an assurance to make Maisie agree to his task. Maisie spared a glance at her sister. Her sister was still standing by the desk. Her head was low and Maisie could see tears trailing down her cheeks. Maisie suddenly became angry. How dare he? Had they not been through enough already with losing their parents?
Alpha Kai noticed the anger that flashed over Maisie's face. Her nostrils flared. Kai would make sure to stomp that anger and bit of defiance quickly on the ground.
"I am yer Alpha. Ye will do as instructed or I will torture yer little sister while ye watch. Am I making myself clear?" Alpha Kai stared at Maisie. His eyes were squinting at Maisie in challenge. Maisie knew when she was defeated. She worried about her little sister. Amelia let a sob escape her.
"Shut it." Alpha Kai said to Amelia. He turned his attention back to Maisie. "Well? Are ye going to be smart about this?" he said slowly. Maisie balled her fists. She held her fists closed so tightly she could feel the blood pooling in them from her nails. She silently nodded her head once.
"Good," Alpha Kai said. He then began to inform Maisie of all that he knew about the Douglas Clan and how he was going to get her within their walls. The rest was going to be left up to her.
