The evening breeze was calm, but Daniel’s heart was not. He sat under the same tree, alone this time, staring at the empty space beside him. “I miss you too.” Isabella’s voice echoed in his mind. He shook his head slowly. “This girl…” he muttered. “She will put me in trouble.” ⸻ “Daniel!” He turned. Emeka was running toward him, slightly out of breath. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” “I’m here now,” Daniel replied calmly. “What happened?” Emeka bent over, catching his breath. “That girl—your rich girl—problem dey o.” Daniel’s expression changed immediately. “What do you mean?” “I hear say her family don already arrange one big man for her. Some rich guy that just came back from abroad.” Daniel felt something drop in his chest. “Are you serious?” “I no dey joke with this kind thing,” Emeka said. “People like her, their life no be their own.” Daniel looked away. Silent. Thinking. ⸻ Meanwhile… Inside the mansion, tension filled the air. “Sit down, Isabella.” Her father’s voice was calm—but firm. She obeyed slowly, sitting across from him in the large living room. Her mother stood nearby, watching quietly. “The Okafors are coming tomorrow,” her father said. Isabella’s heart sank. “So soon?” “Yes.” She took a breath. “Dad… I’m not ready for this.” “You don’t need to be ready. You just need to cooperate.” She looked at him, her eyes pleading now. “I don’t love him.” Her father’s expression didn’t change. “Love comes later.” “No,” she said softly. “Not always.” Silence. Then— “There’s someone else, isn’t there?” he asked. Her heart skipped. She hesitated. And that hesitation was enough. Her mother stepped forward. “Isabella… who is he?” She looked down. “I…” “Answer me!” her father’s voice rose slightly. She closed her eyes for a second. Then whispered— “His name is Daniel.” Silence filled the room. Heavy. Dangerous. “Daniel who?” her father asked coldly. She swallowed. “He… sells pure water.” Her mother gasped. Her father slowly stood up. “You must be joking.” “I’m not.” He let out a dry laugh. “A street hawker?” Isabella said nothing. “Is this some kind of rebellion?” he continued. “Or are you trying to disgrace this family?” “No!” she said quickly. “He’s a good person—” “I don’t care!” he snapped. The room fell silent again. Then he spoke slowly, each word sharp. “You will never see that boy again.” Isabella’s eyes filled with emotion. “You can’t control my feelings.” “I can control your actions,” he replied. She stood up. “I’m not a child.” “No,” he said. “You’re someone who is about to make the biggest mistake of her life.” She shook her head. “No… I think I’ve finally found something real.” He looked at her—long and hard. Then said coldly— “If you continue this nonsense… you will regret it.” ⸻ That night… Isabella sat on her bed, tears rolling quietly down her face. Her phone lay beside her. She picked it up. Then dropped it again. “I don’t even have his number,” she whispered. Frustration. Helplessness. Fear. Everything mixed together. “I need to see him,” she said firmly. ⸻ The next morning… Daniel stood at his usual spot—but his energy was gone. “Pure water…” he said weakly. Emeka watched him. “You don hear wetin I tell you yesterday. You still dey wait?” Daniel sighed. “I just want to see her.” “Why?” Daniel paused. Then said honestly— “Because I don’t think I can walk away.” Emeka shook his head. “This thing go pain you.” Daniel nodded. “I know.” ⸻ Hours passed. No sign of her. The sun grew hotter. The crowd louder. But Daniel remained distracted. Then suddenly— “Daniel!” He turned immediately. And there she was. Running toward him. Breathing heavily. “I’ve been looking for you,” she said. Daniel stepped closer. “What’s wrong?” She looked around nervously. “Can we go somewhere?” He nodded quickly. “Come.” ⸻ They rushed to their usual quiet spot. This time, there was no calm. Only tension. “What happened?” Daniel asked. She took a deep breath. “My parents know.” Daniel froze. “Know… what?” “About you.” Silence. Then— “And?” he asked slowly. “They’ve already chosen someone for me,” she said, her voice shaking. “A rich man. Someone ‘acceptable.’” Daniel looked away. His jaw tightened. “I see.” She stepped closer. “Say something.” He laughed bitterly. “What do you want me to say?” “I don’t know… anything!” He turned to her. “This is what I was trying to avoid.” She shook her head. “No. Don’t do that.” “Do what?” “Don’t push me away.” Daniel’s voice dropped. “I’m not pushing you away… I’m being realistic.” She stepped even closer now. “I don’t want realistic. I want you.” Those words hit him hard. Deep. Dangerous. “You don’t understand what you’re saying,” he whispered. “I do.” “No, you don’t,” he said. “Your world will never accept me.” “Then I don’t want that world!” she replied. Silence. Heavy. Emotional. Daniel looked into her eyes. And for the first time— He saw fear. Real fear. “I’m scared,” she admitted quietly. “They want to control my life.” He softened. “You should listen to them.” Her eyes widened. “What?” “They want what’s best for you.” “No,” she said firmly. “They want what’s best for them.” Daniel didn’t respond. Because deep down— He knew she was right. She reached for his hand. This time, he didn’t pull away. “I don’t care about money,” she said softly. “I care about how I feel when I’m with you.” His heart pounded. “And how do you feel?” he asked. She held his gaze. “Free.” That word stayed between them. Powerful. Honest. And impossible to ignore.
