Chapter One – The Wrong Signature Lena Brooks had one rule: never be late. Every morning before the city fully woke, she was already on the bus, a steaming paper cup of cheap coffee warming her hands. The ride to Knight & Hale Group took almost an hour, giving her plenty of time to watch the streets come alive through the window. She wasn't born into wealth. She didn't have powerful relatives or influential connections. Everything she had, she had earned through hard work. For three years, she had worked as an administrative assistant at Knight & Hale Group, one of the country's largest corporations. It wasn't her dream job, but it was the first step toward the future she had promised herself—and her late mother. "One day," she often whispered to herself, "I'll be more than just an assistant." She carried a small notebook everywhere, filling its pages with goals, business ideas, and reminders to never give up. No one at work knew about those dreams. To them, Lena Brooks was simply the quiet girl who was always early. But this morning... Everything felt different. The moment the elevator doors opened onto the thirty-second floor, chaos greeted her. Employees rushed through the hallways carrying files. Phones rang nonstop. Someone was arguing with the legal department. "Where's the partnership contract?" a manager shouted. "The CEO will be here in five minutes!" "We're running out of time!" Lena blinked. She had never seen the executive floor this frantic before. Her supervisor hurried toward her with a black folder clutched tightly in his hands. "Lena!" She straightened immediately. "Yes, sir?" "I need you to deliver this to the executive conference room. Personally. Don't hand it to anyone else." He pressed the folder into her hands. "It contains the partnership contract." Lena nodded confidently. "I understand." She held the folder carefully against her chest. This was an important responsibility. She couldn't afford to make a mistake. Taking a slow breath, she walked toward the conference room. Her heels clicked softly against the polished marble floor. The closer she got, the quieter the hallway became. Everyone seemed nervous. Not because of the meeting. Because of the man leading it. Adrian Knight. The youngest CEO in the company's history. Brilliant. Demanding. Cold. People said he remembered every employee who disappointed him. Some whispered he had fired senior executives for making mistakes much smaller than losing an important contract. Others claimed he barely smiled. Lena had only seen him from a distance before. She prayed today wouldn't be the day he noticed her. Just as she reached the conference room doors— Someone slammed into her shoulder. "Oh!" The impact sent both of them stumbling. The folders flew from their hands, scattering papers across the spotless floor. "I'm so sorry!" the young employee exclaimed, dropping to his knees. "I wasn't looking where I was going." "It's okay," Lena replied quickly. They both scrambled to gather the papers before anyone noticed. Neither of them realized they were carrying identical black folders. In their rush, they accidentally switched them. Lena picked up the nearest folder. "Thank you," she said with a nervous smile before hurrying away. She never looked at the cover. Never checked the label. She simply assumed it was the same folder she had been given. One tiny mistake. One careless second. And her life quietly changed forever. She knocked gently. "Come in." The deep voice from inside sent a chill down her spine. The conference room was enormous. Executives in expensive suits sat around a long glass table. At the head sat Adrian Knight. He didn't even look up immediately. His attention remained fixed on several documents before him. Without raising his eyes, he spoke. "You're two minutes early." Lena blinked. "Yes... sir." "That's impressive." Only then did he glance at her. His sharp gray eyes met hers for barely a second, yet it felt much longer. He looked calm. Controlled. Impossible to read. Lena quickly placed the folder before him. "Your contract, sir." He gave a small nod. "Thank you." Relief flooded through her. She quietly excused herself and walked out, believing the hardest part of her morning was finally over. She couldn't have been more wrong. An hour later... The entire executive floor fell silent. The conference room doors burst open. "Who brought me this file?" Adrian's voice echoed across the office. Every conversation stopped. Every employee froze. Lena felt her heart skip a beat. Slowly... She stepped forward. "I... I did, sir." Adrian held up the black folder. His expression remained calm. Too calm. "This isn't the partnership contract." The silence became unbearable. Lena's face drained of color. She stared at the folder in disbelief. "What...?" "I'm sorry," she whispered. "There must have been a mistake." "There was." His voice remained steady. He closed the folder with a soft snap. "And now I want to know how it happened." Lena lowered her eyes. She had worked at Knight & Hale Group for three years without causing a single problem. Now... She might lose everything because of one accident. She turned slowly, hoping to leave before her embarrassment became even worse. "Miss Brooks." She froze. Her fingers tightened around the edge of her notebook. "Yes... sir?" Adrian's gaze never left her. "Don't leave
