THE CORRUPTOR'S TOUCH

1718 Words
The network was healing from the Illusionist's attack when the second wave hit. Not with fear or false images—with corruption. Hosts began turning on each other, not because of hallucinations, but because their personalities were being rewritten. A gentle host became violent. A loyal host became a traitor. A peaceful host started a brawl. Jayden felt the shifts through the seed—not physical pain, but something deeper. The network was being poisoned from within. Leah's monitors showed a pattern. "It's not random. The corrupted hosts are all in the same region. The Midwest." "Another experiment?" "Worse. It's a host who can manipulate the seed's influence. Twisting the connections, turning the network's own bonds into weapons." "What's her name?" "Not a her. A him. He calls himself the Corruptor. He was an Assembly scientist who experimented on himself. He can infect the network like a virus." Jayden stood up. "Where is he?" "Chicago. He's hiding in the same building where we found Vera." --- The flight to Chicago was tense. Jayden sat in the private plane, reaching through the network, trying to locate the source of the corruption. It was like tracking a disease—symptoms everywhere, but the patient hidden. Andrew sat across from him. "You're going to confront him alone?" "I'm taking Dorian. He can sever corrupted connections." "And if the Corruptor infects you?" "The seed will protect me. It has before." --- Chicago was gray and wet. The building where Vera had nearly died was now a hub of dark energy. Jayden could feel it from blocks away—a sickening pulse, like a heartbeat made of poison. Dorian walked beside him. "He's strong. I can feel his power from here." "Can you sever him?" "Not from outside. I need to get close. Touch him." "Then let's get close." --- The building was abandoned, but not empty. Corrupted hosts stood guard at the entrance—their eyes black, their movements jerky. They didn't attack, just watched. "The Corruptor wants us to come in," Jayden said. "It's a trap." "They're all traps. We walk in anyway." --- The Corruptor was in the basement—the same room where Vera had been found. He sat in a chair surrounded by monitors, his hands connected to tubes filled with dark liquid. His eyes were completely black, and his skin was pale, almost translucent. "Jayden Cross," he said. "The seed-carrier. I've been waiting for you." "You've been hurting innocent people." "I've been evolving them. The network is a cage. I'm setting them free." "By turning them into puppets?" "By showing them what they really are. Animals. Predators. There's no peace, no community, no love. Only power and the will to use it." "You're wrong." "Am I? Look at history. Look at the Assembly. Look at the Crown. Everything hosts have ever built has crumbled because of greed, fear, betrayal. I'm just accelerating the inevitable." --- Jayden stepped closer. The dark liquid in the tubes pulsed. "The network is different. It's built on connection, not control. On support, not domination." "That's what you tell yourself. But deep down, you know the truth. You're the center. Without you, the network collapses. That's not connection. That's a throne." "You're wrong about me. And you're wrong about the network." Jayden reached out. The seed pulsed. Dark light shot from the Corruptor's hands, toward Jayden's chest. Not to harm—to corrupt. He could feel the poison trying to seep into the seed, to twist his connection to the network. The seed resisted. Pulsed. Pushed back. "You can't corrupt me," Jayden said. "I'm not just connected to the network. I am the network." "Then the network is vulnerable." The Corruptor pressed harder. --- Dorian stepped forward, his hands glowing with severing energy. "I can cut his connection to the corrupted hosts. But I need you to distract him." "Do it." Jayden walked toward the Corruptor, ignoring the dark light washing over him. The seed pulsed, protecting him, but the poison was strong. He could feel it trying to find cracks, weaknesses. "You're immune," the Corruptor said, surprise in his voice. "The seed chose me because I can't be corrupted. Not by power. Not by fear. Not by lies." "Everyone can be corrupted." "Try me." --- Dorian reached the Corruptor's chair. His hands touched the tubes, the monitors, the dark liquid. Severing energy exploded, cutting the Corruptor's connection to the hosts he had infected. Across the city, corrupted hosts blinked, shook their heads, came back to themselves. The Corruptor screamed. "You're destroying my work!" "You're destroying lives." Dorian severed the last tube. The Corruptor collapsed, his body convulsing. The dark liquid drained from his veins, leaving him pale and weak. Jayden caught him. "It's over." The Corruptor looked up, his eyes flickering between black and human. "You should have killed me." "Maybe. But I'm not a killer." "You're a fool." "Probably." --- The corrupted hosts recovered. The network healed. Leah coordinated with local authorities, bringing the victims to safety, monitoring them for side effects. The Corruptor was taken to the gym, sedated, contained. Dorian stood over him. "He's dangerous. Even without his powers, he knows too much about the network. He could be a threat." "Then we rehabilitate him. Like we did with you." Dorian was silent. --- The unknown number sent a message. *"The Corruptor was a test of the network's resilience. The seed resisted. The network survived. But the Deep Origin is not satisfied. It wants to see if the network can withstand an attack from within—not from an outsider, but from one of its own."* Jayden typed back: *"What do you mean?"* *"One of the hosts in your network is a sleeper. Planted by the Assembly. Programmed to turn when the time is right. You need to find them before they activate."* Jayden's blood went cold. *"Who?"* *"I don't know. But they are close to you. Someone you trust."* --- Jayden called a meeting. The council gathered in the command center: Elias, Morgan, Kira, Daniel, Vera, Calder, Dorian, Lenore, Vance, and Roman. Jayden looked at each of them—people he had fought beside, bled beside, trusted. "One of you is a sleeper agent," he said. "Planted by the Assembly. Programmed to turn when the time is right." The room went silent. Morgan spoke first. "That's insane. We've all been vetted." "The Assembly is thorough. They could have planted someone years ago. Before any of us even knew about the network." Elias crossed his arms. "How do we find them?" "I don't know. But we need to figure it out. Fast." --- The investigation took days. Leah ran background checks, psychological profiles, network connection logs. Everyone had a history, everyone had secrets, but nothing conclusive. Jayden watched his friends differently now. Every word, every gesture, could be a clue. Or a lie. Andrew noticed. "You're pulling back. Distancing yourself." "I don't know who to trust." "You trust me." "Do I?" Andrew's face tightened. "After everything we've been through?" "I trust you. But I trusted everyone in that room. And one of them is a traitor." --- The unknown number sent a message. *"The sleeper is close. They will activate soon. You need to be ready."* Jayden typed back: *"How will I know?"* *"You will feel it. The network will scream."* --- The scream came at 2 AM. Jayden woke with a spike of betrayal—not his own, but the network's. A host was turning, their connection to the seed twisting, becoming something dark. He ran to the command center. Leah's monitors showed chaos. The sleeper was in the gym, in the basement where the seed's resonance was strongest. "Who?" Jayden demanded. "It's... Vera." --- Vera stood in the basement, surrounded by dark light. Her eyes were black, her hands crackling with corrupted energy. The Assembly's programming had activated, turning her against the network. "You should have known," she said. "I was never really healed. The Assembly made sure of that. They planted a trigger deep in my mind. And now... now I destroy everything you've built." "Vera. Fight it." "I can't. It's too strong." She raised her hand. Dark light shot toward Jayden. --- The seed pulsed. Jayden dodged, rolled, came up behind her. He didn't attack—he grabbed her shoulders, held her still. "Remember who you are," he said. "Remember Marcus. Remember the grief. Remember why you came here." "I came here to destroy you." "You came here to heal." The seed pulsed—not with power, but with warmth. Jayden channeled the network's love, its support, its hope, directly into Vera. She screamed. The dark light flickered. "Fight it," Jayden said. "You're stronger than their programming." Vera's eyes flickered—black to human and back. "I... can't..." "You can. I believe in you." --- The dark light exploded. Jayden was thrown back, hit the wall, slid down. But Vera stood in the center of the room, gasping, her eyes human, her hands clean. "It's gone," she whispered. "The programming. It's gone." "The network burned it out." Vera looked at him, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I didn't remember." "It's not your fault. The Assembly made you." "I still hurt people." "Then you help them heal. Like I helped you." --- The unknown number sent a message. *"The sleeper has been neutralized. The network is secure. But the Assembly's influence runs deep. There may be others. You must remain vigilant."* Jayden typed back: *"I will."* *"The Deep Origin is watching. It is... impressed. You have turned a weapon into an ally. Again."* *"That's what I do."* --- The days that followed were a process of rebuilding trust. Vera worked with Dorian and Lenore, learning to control her programming, to recognize the triggers. The network welcomed her back—cautiously, but warmly. Jayden sat on the roof, looking at the stars. Andrew climbed up beside him. "You saved her." "She saved herself. I just gave her a push." "You always say that." "Because it's true." They stood in silence, watching the lights of the city. The seed pulsed—warm, steady, resilient. Jayden smiled. The war wasn't over. There would be more tests, more threats, more broken people to heal. But for now, the network was safe. And that was enough.
