The first test arrived not with a bang, but with a whisper.
Jayden was in the command center, reviewing reports, when Leah's monitors flickered. A message, untraceable, appeared on every screen.
*"The origin watches. The seed grows. But the world does not wait. There are others who seek the source. Others who want what you have. Beware the Alliance of Shadows."*
Jayden read the words twice. "Alliance of Shadows?"
Leah shook her head. "No record. No known hosts. No known organization."
"Then we need to find out."
---
The first attack came three hours later.
Not on the gym—on a host safe house in Chicago. A group of masked figures, their systems active, their eyes black. They killed three hosts and vanished.
Hall called with the news. "Witnesses say they were looking for something. Asking about the source. About the seed."
"Did they find anything?"
"No. But they'll try again."
---
Jayden flew to Chicago.
The safe house was a wreck—walls torn, floor stained with blood. The bodies had been removed, but their outlines remained in chalk.
Agent Davies met him at the scene. "We've seen this before. Professional. Efficient. They knew exactly what they were looking for."
"A piece of the source. A Crown fragment. Anything they could use to track the seed."
"That's what we figured."
"Any leads?"
"One. A name. Someone who might know who's behind the attacks." Davies handed him a file. "Her name is Kaelen. She's a host. Used to work for the Assembly, but went rogue. She's been hiding in the tunnels beneath the city."
Jayden opened the file. A woman's face stared back at him—sharp features, dark eyes, a scar across her left cheek.
"Where can I find her?"
"She'll find you. If you're lucky."
---
The tunnels were the same ones where Jayden had fought the Wardens, where he'd found the Crown's chamber.
He walked through the darkness, the seed's warmth guiding him. The Alliance of Shadows had been here—he could feel their residue, their hunger.
Kaelen found him at the old station.
"You're Jayden Cross."
"I am."
"I've heard about you. The grave-crawler. The source-sealer. The seed-carrier." She stepped out of the shadows. "You're braver than I expected, coming here alone."
"I'm not alone. I have the seed."
"The seed is why they're hunting you. They want it. Want to cut it out of you and use it to control the source."
"Who are they?"
"The Alliance. Former Assembly members who didn't like the way things were going. They've been building their power for years, waiting for the right moment."
"And now?"
"Now the source is waking. The seed is growing. The moment is here."
---
Kaelen agreed to help.
Not because she trusted Jayden—because she hated the Alliance more. She'd seen what they did to hosts. What they planned to do.
"They have a base," she said. "In the mountains. The same range where the source was sealed. They've been excavating, looking for fragments, building something."
"Building what?"
"A weapon. Something that can cut the seed out of a host without killing them. Something that can transfer its power to someone else."
"To who?"
"Their leader. A man named Corvus. He used to be Ezra's assistant. He knows more about the source than anyone alive."
---
The mission to the mountains took three days to plan.
Jayden, Andrew, Viktor, Sera, and Kaelen. Five people against an army.
Hall provided satellite images, showing a compound hidden in a valley, camouflaged against the rock.
"They have defenses," Hall said. "Automated turrets. Motion sensors. Patrolling hosts. Getting in won't be easy."
"Then we don't go in. We draw them out."
Kaelen nodded. "Corvus is arrogant. He can't resist a challenge. If you call him out—personally—he'll come."
"And if he doesn't?"
"Then we find another way."
---
The challenge was issued at dawn.
Jayden stood at the edge of the valley, a camera drone hovering beside him. His face appeared on every screen in the compound.
"Corvus. I know you're in there. I know you want the seed. I'm offering you a chance to take it. One fight. Me and you. Winner takes all."
Silence.
Then a voice, amplified through speakers: "You're either very brave or very stupid."
"Both."
"Fine. The clearing, north of the compound. One hour. Come alone."
Jayden lowered the camera. "He took the bait."
---
The clearing was a killing ground.
Open space. No cover. Corvus stood in the center, surrounded by his lieutenants. He was tall, thin, with pale skin and cold eyes. His system—whatever it was—pulsed with dark light.
"You came alone," Corvus said.
"I keep my word."
"Then you'll die alone."
Corvus raised his hand. Dark light gathered.
Jayden didn't move.
The light struck—and passed through him. The seed had made him intangible, like Sera.
Corvus's eyes widened. "How—"
"The seed gives me abilities you can't imagine."
Jayden became solid, lunged, and drove his knife into Corvus's shoulder.
The man screamed, staggered, but didn't fall. His system was healing him—fast.
"You'll have to do better than that."
Corvus punched Jayden in the chest.
---
The impact threw Jayden across the clearing.
He hit the ground, rolled, came up gasping. The seed healed him, but slowly. Corvus was strong—stronger than any host he'd faced.
"Your system," Jayden said. "What is it?"
"Essence absorption. Like the Revenant, but better. I don't need to touch you to drain you. I just need to be near you."
Jayden felt it now—a tugging at his core, the seed weakening.
He ran.
Not away—toward. He tackled Corvus, drove him to the ground, and pressed the knife to his throat.
"Drain me now, and you die."
Corvus laughed. "You won't kill me. You need me alive. To find the weapon. To stop the Alliance."
"You're right. I won't kill you." Jayden pressed harder. "But I'll hurt you."
---
The lieutenants attacked.
Andrew and the others emerged from the treeline, engaging them. Viktor took down two with his rebar. Sera phased through a third, disarming her. Andrew provided cover fire.
Kaelen fought her way to Jayden's side. "The weapon is in the compound. We need to destroy it."
"Go. I'll handle Corvus."
Kaelen ran.
---
Corvus struggled, but Jayden held him down. The seed was pulsing—stronger now, feeding on Corvus's Essence.
"You're draining me," Corvus gasped.
"You're draining yourself. Your system is trying to absorb the seed, but the seed is fighting back."
"Impossible."
"Nothing is impossible."
The dark light around Corvus flickered, dimmed. His system was failing.
Jayden released him.
Corvus lay on the ground, gasping, powerless. "Kill me."
"No. You're going to prison. You're going to spend the rest of your life thinking about how you failed."
---
Kaelen found the weapon.
It was in the compound's central chamber—a machine, like the one Mira had built, but larger. More complex.
"This is what they were building," she said. "A seed extractor. It would have killed you."
"Can you destroy it?"
"I can try."
She placed explosives on its core, set the timer, and ran.
---
The explosion shook the mountain.
The compound collapsed. The weapon was gone.
Jayden stood outside, watching the smoke rise. Corvus was in custody. The Alliance was broken.
Kaelen walked up beside him. "It's over."
"For now."
"You always say that."
"Because it's always true."
---
The unknown number sent a message.
*"You passed the first test. The Alliance is broken. But there are others. The origin will continue to challenge you. Prepare."*
Jayden typed back: *"I'm always prepared."*
*"No one is always prepared. But you are learning."*
He lowered the phone.
The sun was setting over the mountains. The world was still standing.
But somewhere in the darkness, something else was watching.
And Jayden Cross was ready.
