THE TWIN'S GAMBIT

1291 Words
The twin didn't die in the void. Jayden learned this three days after the bridge collapsed. He was in the gym, sparring with Viktor, when the air grew cold. The lights flickered. And standing in the corner, watching, was himself. Black eyes. Star-speckled skin. A smile that wasn't his. "You're not real," Jayden said. "I'm as real as you. More real, maybe. The bridge is gone, but I am not. I was never in the bridge. I was in you." Viktor spun, saw nothing. "Who are you talking to?" Jayden's twin laughed—a sound like breaking glass. "They can't see me. Only you. We're connected, you and I. Two halves of the same whole." "Get out of my head." "I can't. I'm part of you now. The seed made sure of that." The twin vanished. Jayden stood in the center of the ring, breathing hard. Viktor lowered his fists. "What just happened?" "Nothing. Keep sparring." --- The twin appeared again that night. Jayden was in the basement, meditating, trying to quiet the seed's pulse. The twin sat across from him, legs crossed, mirroring his posture. "You're trying to shut me out," the twin said. "You can't." "I can try." "Trying is failing. Accept me. Embrace me. Let's be what we were meant to be." "Which is?" "The new source. The new Crown. The new beginning. Together, we could remake the world." "I don't want to remake the world." "Then watch it burn." The twin vanished. --- Leah noticed the changes. Jayden's vitals were fluctuating—heart rate, blood pressure, brain activity. The seed's energy signature was spiking at random intervals. "It's like you're fighting someone inside your head," she said. "I am." "Who?" "My twin. The shadow. The thing the seed created." Leah frowned. "The scans don't show anyone else." "Because he's not physical. He's... metaphysical. A thought. A possibility. A version of me that could have been." "Can you kill a thought?" "I don't know." --- Daniel had a vision. He was in the basement, meditating, when his body went rigid. His eyes rolled back. "The twin is feeding," Daniel said. "Not on Essence—on doubt. On fear. On every moment of weakness Jayden has ever had. The stronger the twin gets, the weaker Jayden becomes." "How do we stop it?" "Jayden has to face him. In the void. In the place where the twin was born." "That almost killed him last time." "This time, he might not come back." --- Jayden agreed to the journey. Leah set up the containment circle. Daniel sat across from him, ready to guide. Andrew stood by the door, arms crossed. "I don't like this," Andrew said. "You never like anything." "This time, I have reason." Jayden looked at his brother. "If I don't come back—" "You'll come back. You always do." --- Leah threw the switch. The world dissolved. Jayden stood in the void—no floor, no ceiling, no walls. Beside him, Daniel's spirit-form glowed. "The twin is here," Daniel said. "I can feel him." "Where?" "Everywhere. Nowhere. He's part of this place." The twin appeared—walking out of the darkness, black eyes gleaming. "You came back," the twin said. "I was hoping you would." "This ends today." "No. This begins today." The twin raised his hand. Dark light exploded. --- The fight was not physical. It was mental. Emotional. Every doubt Jayden had ever felt, the twin weaponized. Every fear. Every failure. "You should have died in that grave," the twin said. "You're not a hero. You're a survivor. There's a difference." "I know the difference." "Do you? Heroes sacrifice themselves for others. Survivors sacrifice others for themselves. How many people have died because of you? Because of your choices?" Jayden thought of Carlos. Of Agent Chen. Of all the hosts who had fallen. "That wasn't my fault." "Wasn't it? You led them into battle. You made them fight. You could have walked away. Any time. But you didn't. Because you like fighting. Because you're good at it. Because without it, you're nothing." "You're wrong." "Am I? Look at yourself. Look at what you've become. A leader? A protector? No. You're a weapon. A weapon that doesn't know when to stop." --- Jayden staggered. The twin's words were cutting deeper than any blade. Because they were true. Or close enough. Daniel's voice: "Jayden. Don't listen to him. He's feeding on your doubt. If you believe him, he wins." "How do I stop believing?" "By remembering who you are. Not what you've done. Who you are." Jayden closed his eyes. He thought of the grave. The dirt. The feeling of being buried alive. But also the feeling of clawing his way out. The determination. The will to live. He thought of Andrew. Of Marcus. Of Zoe. Of everyone who had stood by him. He thought of the hosts he'd saved. The lives he'd changed. He opened his eyes. "I'm not a weapon," Jayden said. "I'm a man. A man who made mistakes. A man who lost people. A man who kept going. Not because I like fighting—because I had to. Because someone had to." The twin's form flickered. "You're lying to yourself." "No. I'm finally telling the truth." --- Jayden walked toward the twin. Not fighting. Not attacking. Just walking. The twin raised his hand. Dark light gathered. "You can't hurt me. I'm part of you." "Then I'll accept you." "What?" "I'll accept that you exist. That you're part of me. That I have doubts. Fears. Weaknesses. But I won't let them control me." He reached out, touched the twin's chest. The twin screamed. Dark light exploded—but this time, it didn't harm. It merged. The twin's form dissolved, flowing into Jayden, becoming part of him. The void faded. --- Jayden woke in the basement. Daniel was beside him, gasping. Leah was at the controls, monitors stabilizing. "The twin is gone," Leah said. "Absorbed. The seed's energy signature is steady." Jayden sat up. He felt different. Lighter. Complete. "The twin wasn't my enemy," he said. "He was my shadow. My doubt. My fear. By accepting him, I took away his power." "So you're... whole now?" "For the first time in years." --- The unknown number sent a message. *"You have integrated your shadow. This is a rare achievement. Most hosts who face their twin are destroyed by it. You are stronger than you know."* Jayden typed back: *"What now?"* *"Now you prepare. The source of the source is still waking. The origin is still coming. But you have taken the first step toward being ready."* *"What's the next step?"* *"You will know when the time comes."* --- The days that followed were peaceful. The seed was quiet. The twin was gone. The hosts were stable. Jayden trained. Taught. Led. But something was different. He could feel it—a presence at the edge of his awareness. Not threatening. Just... waiting. Daniel felt it too. "The origin. It's not hostile. It's curious." "Curious about what?" "About you. About what you'll become." --- One night, Jayden stood on the roof, looking at the stars. The sky was clear. The city was quiet. His phone buzzed. Unknown number: *"The origin is closer now. It will arrive within the year. You need to be ready."* Jayden typed back: *"How do I prepare for something I don't understand?"* *"By understanding yourself. The origin is a mirror. It will show you who you truly are. If you are afraid of what you see, you will be destroyed. If you accept it, you will be transformed."* He lowered the phone. The stars seemed brighter. The night seemed colder. Somewhere in the darkness, the origin was watching. And Jayden Cross was ready.
