Jayden dreamed of stars.
Not the stars in the sky—the stars in the thing's skin. The thing in the Crown. It was still there, at the edge of his consciousness, waiting. Watching.
He woke in his cot at the Iron Pit, drenched in sweat.
Andrew stood by the door, coffee in hand. "You were screaming."
"I don't scream."
"You do now."
Jayden sat up, rubbed his face. The Nexus link pulsed at the back of his skull—a constant awareness of Crown activity. He could feel it now, faint but present. Somewhere in the world, a host was fighting. Somewhere else, another host was dying. The Crown fed.
"How long was I out?"
"Eight hours. Leah's been monitoring the council. Magda made her move."
Jayden stood up. "What move?"
"She consolidated power. Killed two rivals. Took control of the council's remaining hosts. She's declared a new Purge—not waiting for the natural cycle. She's going to force it."
"How?"
"That's what we need to figure out."
---
The command center was buzzing.
Leah had multiple screens up, showing news feeds, satellite images, intercepted communications. Viktor was there, his broken arm in a sling. Sera sat in the corner, eyes closed, meditating.
Leah looked up when Jayden entered. "Magda issued a public challenge. She's calling out all hosts in North America. She wants a tournament."
"A tournament?"
"A fight to the death. Winner gets the Crown fragment you absorbed. She thinks if she claims it, she can control the Purge."
Jayden stared at the screen. "That's insane."
"That's Magda. She's arrogant. But she's also smart. She's using the tournament to draw out every host on the continent. While they're all in one place, she'll eliminate them."
"Where's the tournament being held?"
"Abandoned military base in Nevada. Middle of the desert. No witnesses. No interference."
"When?"
"Three weeks."
Jayden turned to the group. "We can't let that happen. If every host in North America gathers in one place, the Crown will feast. The lock will weaken further. The thing inside will get closer to breaking free."
"Then we stop the tournament," Andrew said. "Kill Magda before it starts."
"Her compound is in Krovograd. Surrounded by loyal hosts. We'd never get close."
Viktor spoke up. "You don't need to get close. You need to draw her out."
"How?"
"Challenge her. One-on-one. She can't refuse—her followers expect her to be strong. If she runs from a challenge, she loses authority."
Jayden considered. "Where would we fight?"
"Neutral ground. Somewhere she can't set traps. The old Sterling estate—it's empty now, seized by the feds. No council presence."
Sera opened her eyes. "She won't come alone."
"No. She'll bring guards. But so will we."
---
The next forty-eight hours were a blur of preparation.
Leah coordinated with Agent Chen's replacement—a man named Davies, skeptical but cooperative. The FBI agreed to secure the perimeter around the Sterling estate, keep out unwanted observers.
Jayden trained. Fought. Studied Magda's system.
The Shadow Weave allowed her to manipulate darkness—create shadows, move through them, blind her enemies. Her weakness was light. Bright, sudden light.
He packed flares. Flashbangs. A high-powered tactical light mounted on his rifle.
Viktor drilled him on her fighting style. "She's patient. She'll try to exhaust you, then strike. Don't let her control the pace."
"What if she does?"
"Then you're dead."
---
The day of the challenge arrived.
Jayden drove to the Sterling estate with Andrew and Viktor. Sera stayed behind to guard the gym. Leah monitored from the command center.
The estate was a sprawling mansion outside the city, surrounded by gardens and iron gates. The feds had cleared the area; no civilians for a mile.
Jayden parked the car, walked to the center of the courtyard.
Magda was already there.
She was tall, thin, with pale skin and dark hair pulled tight against her skull. Her eyes were black—no iris, no white. Shadows clung to her like a second skin.
"You came," she said.
"You challenged."
"I challenged all hosts. You're just the first to answer." She smiled—thin lips, no warmth. "Brave. Or stupid."
"Both."
Jayden raised his rifle, clicked on the tactical light. The beam cut through the shadows around her.
Magda hissed, stepped back. "Bright. But not bright enough."
She raised her hands.
Darkness exploded from her body, swallowing the courtyard. Jayden's light flickered, dimmed. The shadows pressed against him, cold and heavy.
The Crimson Trial pulsed.
**[SHADOW WEAVE ACTIVE – VISIBILITY REDUCED BY 90%]**
**[HEAT SIGNATURES: 1 – MAGDA, 15 FEET AHEAD]**
Jayden fired.
The bullets tore through the darkness, but he couldn't see if they hit. The shadows swallowed the sound, the light, the impact.
Magda's voice came from everywhere. "You can't fight what you can't see."
"I don't need to see you. I just need to blind you."
He pulled a flashbang, pulled the pin, and tossed it at the heat signature.
The explosion was deafening, even through the shadows. White light pierced the darkness.
Magda screamed.
The shadows retreated. She stood in the center of the courtyard, hands over her eyes, dark blood seeping between her fingers.
"You blinded me," she said, almost wondering.
"Temporarily."
Jayden ran at her, rifle raised. She swung blindly, caught him in the chest—not hard, but enough to stagger him. He recovered, drove the butt of his rifle into her face.
She fell.
He stood over her, aimed at her head.
"Call off the tournament," he said.
Magda laughed—a wet, broken sound. "It's already started. Even if I die, the hosts will gather. The Crown will call. You can't stop it."
"Then I'll kill them one by one."
"You'll try. And you'll fail."
She raised her hand. Shadows leaped from the ground, wrapping around Jayden's legs, his arms, his throat. He couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.
The Crimson Trial pulsed.
**[CROWN FRAGMENT: ACTIVE]**
**[ESSENCE RELEASE: 2000 UNITS]**
**[LIGHT BURST: 30-FOOT RADIUS]**
Light exploded from his chest—not from a weapon, but from the fragment. Pure white, hot as the sun.
The shadows vaporized. Magda's body convulsed, burned, crumbled to ash.
The darkness fled.
Jayden stood alone in the courtyard, gasping.
The Crimson Trial pulsed.
**[MAGDA NEUTRALIZED – SHADOW WEAVE SYSTEM]**
**[ESSENCE GAINED: 2000 UNITS]**
**[TOTAL ESSENCE: 11,410 UNITS]**
**[NEXUS LINK: COUNCIL THREAT LEVEL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED]**
Andrew ran to him. "Is it over?"
"One battle. The tournament is still happening."
"Without Magda, it might fall apart."
"Or someone worse will take her place."
---
The drive back was quiet.
Jayden sat in the passenger seat, staring at his hands. The Crown fragment's light had faded, but he could still feel it—a warmth under his skin, a hunger at the edge of his thoughts.
"You're changing," Viktor said from the back seat.
"I know."
"The fragment is eating you. Ezra's journal said prolonged exposure would kill the host."
"Ezra also said the process would take years. I have time."
"Do you? The Purge is in 174 days. The tournament is in three weeks. The thing in the Crown is getting impatient."
Jayden didn't answer.
---
Leah met them at the gym with news.
"The tournament is still on. A man named Anton has taken Magda's place. He hosts the Warp system—can teleport short distances. He's dangerous."
"Can we challenge him?"
"Not directly. He's hiding. But we know where the tournament is being held. We could send a team to disrupt it."
"That's what they want. They'll be waiting."
"Then we send someone they're not expecting."
Leah looked at Sera.
Sera's eyes widened. "Me?"
"You can turn invisible. Intangible. You can walk through their defenses, plant explosives, and get out before anyone knows you were there."
"And if I'm caught?"
"Then you're dead. But you knew the risks when you came back."
Sera was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded. "I'll do it. But I want something in return."
"What?"
"When this is over, I want the council's records. Everything they have on other hosts. I want to find the ones who are like me—people who were forced into this life. I want to help them."
Jayden nodded. "You'll have it."
---
Sera left that night.
Jayden watched her car disappear into the darkness. Andrew stood beside him.
"You trust her?"
"I trust her to do the job. After that..." He shrugged. "After that, we'll see."
"You're getting soft."
"Or I'm getting smart. There's a difference."
---
The next three days were quiet.
Too quiet.
Jayden trained. Read Ezra's journal again. Meditated, trying to understand the Nexus link.
The thing in the Crown didn't speak to him again, but he could feel it—watching, waiting, growing stronger.
On the fourth day, Leah called him to the command center.
"Sera made contact. She's inside the tournament grounds. She says there are over fifty hosts gathered. Many of them are innocent—just people who were chosen by systems, trying to survive."
"Can she get them out?"
"Not all of them. But she can disrupt the tournament. Plant explosives in the main arena. When the hosts gather, she can scatter them."
"Do it."
---
The explosion came at midnight.
Jayden watched the news feed—a live report from Nevada. The abandoned military base was on fire. Hosts were fleeing in all directions. Sera had done it.
His phone buzzed.
Sera: *"Tournament is over. But Anton escaped. He's coming for you."*
Jayden typed back: *"Let him come."*
Sera: *"He's not alone. He's bringing the remaining council members. Five of them. They'll be at the gym in two days."*
Two days.
Jayden called a meeting.
---
"We need to evacuate," Andrew said.
"No. This is our home. Our base. If we run, they win."
"We can't fight five council members on our own."
"We won't be on our own. Leah, contact Agent Davies. Tell him we need federal support. Viktor, call your old contacts—anyone who owes you a favor. Sera, get back here as fast as you can."
"And you?" Andrew asked.
"I'm going to the basement. I need to talk to the fragment."
---
The basement was cold.
Jayden sat in front of the lead-lined box—empty now, since he'd absorbed the fragment. But he could still feel it. Inside him.
He closed his eyes.
*"You want me to claim the Crown,"* he thought.
The thing's voice echoed in his skull. *"You are the only one strong enough."*
*"And if I refuse?"*
*"Then someone else will. Someone weaker. Someone who will break the lock immediately. The world will end within a year."*
*"If I claim it, I can reinforce the lock. Delay the end."*
*"For how long?"*
*"As long as I can survive."*
The thing was silent. Then: *"You are different. The others wanted power. You want to protect."*
*"Is that enough?"*
*"It is... unusual. I will consider."*
The presence faded.
Jayden opened his eyes.
---
Two days later, Anton came.
He arrived at dawn, alone—no council members, no followers. Just a man in a black coat, standing in the street in front of the gym.
Jayden walked out to meet him.
"You're Anton."
"And you're the grave-crawler." Anton was younger than expected, maybe thirty, with sharp features and restless eyes. "I've heard about you. You killed the Revenant. Took down Magda. Volkov. You're good."
"I'm lucky."
"Luck runs out."
Anton raised his hand. The air shimmered. He teleported—appeared behind Jayden, knife already swinging.
Jayden's combat precognition kicked in. He ducked, spun, drove his elbow into Anton's ribs.
Anton teleported again, appeared on the roof of the gym. "Fast. But not fast enough."
He threw a grenade.
Jayden ran, dove behind a parked car. The explosion shredded the vehicle, sent shrapnel flying.
He rolled to his feet, fired at the roof. Anton was already gone, teleporting to the street, to the alley, to the other side of the gym.
"You can't hit what you can't catch."
"I don't need to catch you. I just need to trap you."
Jayden pulled a flashbang, tossed it at his own feet.
The explosion was blinding. Anton screamed, covered his eyes—and for a second, he didn't teleport.
Jayden shot him.
The bullet caught Anton in the shoulder. He staggered, teleported—but the jump was short, uncontrolled. He appeared ten feet away, bleeding.
"You're hurt," Jayden said.
"So are you."
Anton teleported again—straight at Jayden.
Knife raised.
Jayden stepped into the attack, caught Anton's wrist, and drove his own knife into Anton's chest.
Anton gasped, looked down at the blade, then at Jayden. "Not bad."
He collapsed.
The Crimson Trial pulsed.
**[ANTON NEUTRALIZED – WARP SYSTEM]**
**[ESSENCE GAINED: 1500 UNITS]**
**[TOTAL ESSENCE: 12,910 UNITS]**
**[PURGE COUNTDOWN: 171 DAYS REMAINING]**
Jayden stood over the body, breathing hard.
Andrew walked out of the gym. "Is that all of them?"
"Anton was the last. The council is finished."
"Then why do I feel like we've lost?"
Jayden looked at the sky. Gray. Cold. The sun was hidden behind clouds.
"Because we haven't won. We've just survived. The Crown is still there. The Purge is still coming. The thing inside is still hungry."
"So what now?"
Jayden turned and walked back into the gym.
"Now we prepare for the end."
