Chapter 20: Taking a Break

198 Words
When the summer break finally arrived, Liam left for his internship, and the distance between them grew even more and they felt even more separated than before . The calls became less and less frequent, and the time apart felt longer than ever before. One evening, after a particularly tough day, Mateo called Liam with something on his mind. “I’ve been thinking,” Mateo said carefully. “Maybe we should… take a break. Just for the summer, while we figure things out.” Liam’s heart dropped, the words hitting him like a punch to the gut. “A break? Are you… are you breaking up with me?” “No, no,” Mateo said quickly. “Not breaking up. Just… some space. I don’t want to keep hurting each other because we’re not able to be together like we want.” Liam didn’t know what to say. He understood, but the thought of being without Mateo, even temporarily, terrified him. “Okay,” Liam said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. “If that’s what you think is best.” They ended the call with uncertainty hanging between them, both unsure of what the future held.
