Chapter 4: A Dangerous Proposition

1445 Words
A Desperate Gamble Lyra sat in the dimly lit room, her mind racing. Vanessa’s venomous words still echoed in her head. "Once Lucian grows tired of you, there won’t be anyone left to save you." The thought of being discarded, tossed aside like she was nothing—it made her stomach churn. She wasn’t going to let that happen. If Lucian wanted to keep her here, then he had to prove he actually wanted her. And if he didn’t? Then she’d find a way out. Her fists clenched at the thought. She heard footsteps approaching. A second later, the door swung open, and Lucian stepped inside. His towering frame filled the space, his golden eyes locking onto hers instantly. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, Lucian’s lips curled into that dangerous smirk. "You’ve been quiet, little human," he murmured. "Planning another foolish escape?" Lyra inhaled sharply. She knew what she had to do. She stood, lifting her chin. "No," she said. "I have a proposition for you." Lucian raised a brow, intrigued. "You?" He chuckled, stepping closer. "What could you possibly offer me?" Lyra swallowed but forced herself to stay strong. "You say I’m your mate," she said. "You say I belong to you. But I think fate made a mistake." Lucian’s smirk vanished. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Lyra pressed on before she lost her nerve. "So let’s make a deal," she continued. "Give me a chance to prove that I don’t belong here. If I fail, I’ll stop fighting you. I’ll… I’ll accept this." Lucian’s golden eyes darkened. "And if you succeed?" he asked, voice low and dangerous. "You let me go." A tense silence stretched between them. Lyra held her breath. For a second, she thought he would laugh in her face. But then— Lucian moved. In a blink, he was in front of her, his large hands gripping her waist, pulling her against him. Lyra gasped, her hands instinctively pressing against his chest—a futile attempt to create space. His body was warm, solid, unyielding. "You think you can win against me?" Lucian whispered against her ear. His voice sent a shiver down her spine. "You think you can fight fate?" Lyra forced herself to meet his gaze, even though her heart was hammering against her ribs. "Yes," she whispered. Lucian was silent for a long moment. Then— He smiled. But it wasn’t kind. It was wolfish, predatory. "Fine, little human," he murmured. "Let’s play your game." His fingers trailed slowly down her spine, making her shudder. "But understand this," he continued. His grip tightened, his voice dropping into a possessive growl. "I never lose." A Deadly Wager Lucian stepped back, releasing her abruptly. Lyra staggered slightly, breathless. She hated how her body reacted to him—how the heat of his touch lingered. Lucian walked to the door but paused before leaving. "You have three days," he said, without turning around. Lyra’s stomach twisted. Three days? "To do what?" she asked cautiously. Lucian glanced at her over his shoulder, golden eyes gleaming. "To prove you don’t belong here," he said smoothly. "And if I fail?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper. Lucian smirked. "Then you’ll submit to me completely," he said. Lyra’s breath caught. Before she could say anything else, he was gone. The door closed behind him with a soft click. Silence filled the room. Lyra’s fingers curled into fists. Her heart pounded. She had three days to outsmart a ruthless Alpha. And if she failed… She would belong to him forever. Meanwhile… In the Shadows From deep within the forest, another pair of eyes watched the events unfold. Alpha Darius stood at the edge of Lucian’s territory, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "So, the great Alpha Lucian has taken a human mate… Interesting." His Beta, a large, scarred man named Rowan, shifted beside him. "Do you think she’ll survive?" Rowan asked. Darius chuckled. "That depends," he mused. "On whether she’s strong enough to survive Lucian’s obsession… or if she’ll break under it." His smirk deepened. Either way, it would be entertaining to watch. And if she did break? A Battle of Wills The moment Lucian left, Lyra collapsed onto the bed, her heart still racing. What have I done? She had just challenged an Alpha. A ruthless, dominant, possessive Alpha. Her fingers trembled as she clenched the blanket. She wasn’t stupid—Lucian wasn’t going to make this easy for her. She had three days to prove she wasn’t fit to be his mate. But how? Her mind raced with possibilities. Could she prove she wasn’t strong enough? No—that might only make him more possessive. Could she convince the pack that she didn’t belong? Doubtful. The wolves already saw her as weak. Could she— Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. Lyra stiffened. Before she could answer, the door swung open, and Elias stepped inside. Lucian’s Beta. She had seen him before, always at Lucian’s side—silent, observant, dangerous in his own right. His dark eyes scanned her for a moment before he leaned casually against the doorframe. "You’re either incredibly brave," he said, his voice smooth, "or incredibly foolish." Lyra swallowed. "Which one do you think I am?" she asked. Elias smirked. "A little of both," he admitted. "But mostly foolish." Lyra scowled. "Thanks for the vote of confidence," she muttered. Elias chuckled. "You don’t understand Lucian, do you?" he asked. Lyra crossed her arms. "I understand enough." Elias shook his head. "No, you don’t," he said. "You think this is a game. That you can make a deal with him and walk away. But Lucian… he doesn’t let go of what’s his." Lyra’s heart skipped a beat. "I’m not his," she said firmly. Elias tilted his head, studying her. "Tell that to the mark on your neck." Lyra’s fingers instinctively touched the spot where Lucian had marked her. She clenched her jaw. "I didn’t ask for this." Elias sighed. "Maybe not," he said. "But now that it’s done, you need to be careful." Lyra frowned. "Why are you warning me?" For the first time, something unreadable flickered in Elias’s gaze. "Because I’ve seen what happens to people who try to defy Lucian," he said. "And I don’t think you’re ready for what’s coming." The Alpha’s Game Begins The next morning, Lyra was jolted awake by the sound of her door slamming open. She sat up, heart pounding, only to find Lucian standing in the doorway. His golden eyes burned as they landed on her. "Get up," he ordered. Lyra frowned. "Excuse me?" Lucian stepped forward, his presence commanding. "You wanted to prove yourself," he said. "Then get up. Your test starts now." Lyra hesitated. "Test?" she echoed. Lucian smirked. "You have three days, little human," he reminded her. "Let’s see if you survive them." Lyra’s stomach twisted. Something told her that this wasn’t going to be fair. And she was right. Trial by Fire Lyra was led outside, where the pack had gathered. Lucian stood beside her, his expression unreadable. "This human thinks she can prove she doesn’t belong here," he announced. Murmurs spread through the crowd. Vanessa, standing near the front, smirked. "Oh, this should be fun," she purred. Lyra glared at her before focusing on Lucian. "What exactly do I have to do?" she asked. Lucian’s eyes gleamed. "Survive," he said simply. Lyra barely had time to react before she was shoved into the training ring. The crowd roared. A figure stepped forward—a massive werewolf warrior. "You want to prove you don’t belong?" Lucian said smoothly. "Then fight." Lyra’s blood turned cold. "Fight?" she repeated, staring up at her opponent. Lucian smirked. "Try not to die, little human." The First Blow Before Lyra could process what was happening, the warrior lunged. She barely dodged in time, falling hard into the dirt. Pain shot through her palms, but she scrambled to her feet. The warrior smirked. "Is that all you’ve got?" Lyra’s heart pounded. She had no training, no strength, no chance. But she had to survive. She had to. The warrior came at her again. This time, she did the only thing she could—she ran. Laughter erupted from the crowd. Vanessa’s voice rang out. "Pathetic!" Lyra ignored her, dodging another attack. Lucian watched her from the edge of the ring, arms crossed. His golden eyes gleamed with something unreadable. Was he… amused? Lyra gritted her teeth. She wasn’t going to let him win. She wasn’t going to let any of them win. She had three days. And she was going to survive.
