Chapter 008

Chapter 008: The Clean Break The silence of my apartment was deafening. For days, I sat on my couch staring at the walls, the echoes of the boardroom betrayal playing on a loop in my mind. Julian’s cold, detached voice saying I will sign the agreement cut deeper than any corporate threat his father could have made. But I couldn't let them destroy my spirit. I had built my career from nothing, and I wasn't going to let the Kingston family ruin my future. On Monday morning, I woke up early, put on a sharp new blazer, and decided to take control of my destiny. I spent the day pounding the pavement, sending out resumes, and setting up meetings at rival financial firms across the city. If I wanted to forget Julian, I needed to bury myself in work. By late afternoon, I found myself sitting across from the hiring manager at Vance Global, one of Kingston Industries' biggest competitors. "Your resume is impeccable, Miss Maya," the manager said, reviewing my saved files from the compliance emergency. "And your references from your time before Kingston speak volumes. We've been looking for someone with your exact expertise to lead our new international division." A spark of hope ignited in my chest. "I'm ready to start immediately." "Excellent. Let's get the paperwork started," he smiled, shaking my hand. Walking out of the building, a heavy weight lifted from my shoulders. I had a new job, a fresh start, and a path forward that didn't involve secret copy-room encounters or late-night corporate traps. I was finally building a wall between myself and the past. But as I stepped onto the subway to head home, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a message from an unknown number, but the text made my breath catch in my throat. Maya, please don't hate him. Julian didn't do it to save himself. He did it because Arthur was going to ruin you. He's miserable. It was from Sarah, Julian's loyal executive assistant. I stared at the screen as the train rattled down the tracks, the carefully built walls around my heart suddenly starting to crack. I stared at Sarah's text message as the subway train screeched to a halt at my station. My fingers trembled slightly over the screen. Part of me wanted to delete the message, block the number, and completely focus on my fresh start at Vance Global. But the words kept echoing in my mind: He did it because Arthur was going to ruin you. He's miserable. Instead of going straight back to my apartment, I walked into a quiet coffee shop near the station, sat down at a corner table, and typed out a quick reply. What do you mean, Sarah? He looked me in the eye and told me the merger came first. A few tense minutes passed before my phone buzzed again. Sarah’s response was long, detailing the closed-door conversation that happened right after I left the boardroom. Arthur had already contacted two major regulatory boards with fabricated reports to destroy your professional license. Julian knew that if he fought his father right then, Arthur would have pressed the button before you even made it to the lobby. Julian signed the arrangement exclusively to buy time and protect your name. He’s completely trapped now, Maya. The engagement gala is next week. I let the phone slip onto the table, a wave of complicated emotions washing over me. The coldness, the rejection, the ultimate "push" in the boardroom—it hadn't been an act of betrayal. It had been an act of protection. I looked out the window at the bustling city streets. Julian had surrendered his own future to ensure I still had one. The anger that had been keeping me strong for days suddenly evaporated, leaving behind a profound, aching sadness—and a fierce new spark of determination. I wasn't the helpless associate Arthur Kingston thought I was. I had a new position at a rival firm, my reputation was intact, and for the first time, I realized I didn't want to just run away and protect myself. If Julian had fought for me in the dark, it was time for me to find a way to fight for him in the light.
