Chapter 11: The Return of the Queen
Arthur Kingston had no idea who I really was. To him, I was just Maya—a replaceable, low-level associate from a modest background who could be easily crushed and tossed aside to protect his family’s corporate interests. He had no clue that the very ground he walked on belonged to my family.
The next morning, I didn’t dress for a job interview, and I didn’t dress to fit into the background. I wore a tailored, midnight-black power suit, my hair styled perfectly, and stepped into a pair of designer heels.
A sleek, black luxury sedan pulled up directly in front of my apartment building. The chauffeur hurried out to open the door, and as I slid onto the leather seat, I looked over at the man sitting next to me.
My father.
He looked exactly as he always had—imposing, sharp-eyed, and carrying an undeniable aura of absolute authority. He looked at me, a soft, proud smile breaking through his usual stern expression. He reached over and placed his hand over mine.
"You look just like your mother," he said softly. "Are you ready to take back what belongs to you, Maya?"
"More than ready, Dad," I replied, my voice completely steady. The fear was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, sharp determination.
The drive to the Kingston Industries headquarters was short. When the car pulled up to the main entrance, security guards immediately recognized the vehicle's registration plates. The entire front lobby went into a frenzy. The head of security ran down the steps to open the door for my father.
We walked into the building side-by-side. The whispering among the staff started instantly, but this time, the glances weren't filled with pity. They were filled with sheer confusion and awe as they saw the girl they had watched pack her desk in disgrace just days ago walking alongside the most powerful billionaire tycoon in the country.
We took the private executive elevator straight to the top floor.
Today was the final board meeting to ratify the merger and cement Julian’s forced alliance with Sophia’s family. When the elevator doors slid open on the boardroom floor, my father’s personal security detail moved ahead of us, pushing open the heavy double doors of the main conference room without knocking.
Inside, the entire board of directors was seated around the massive mahogany table. Arthur Kingston sat at the head, looking smug and victorious, while Julian sat a few seats down, staring blankly at the paperwork in front of him, looking like a ghost. Sophia and her father were seated across from him.
The sudden intrusion made everyone freeze. Arthur looked up, his face instantly twisting into anger when his eyes landed on me.
"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur barked, slamming his hands on the table as he stood up. "Security! I thought I made it clear that this woman was banned from the premises! How dare you show your face here, Maya—"
"Watch your tone, Arthur," my father’s deep, booming voice cut through the room like thunder.
Arthur’s jaw dropped. The words died in his throat as his eyes shifted from me to the man standing right beside me. The arrogance drained from Arthur’s face in a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, sickly paleness.
"Mr... Mr. Sterling?" Arthur stammered, his voice losing all its power as he looked at my father. He looked between the two of us, his mind desperately trying to connect the dots. "What... what are you doing here? And why are you with her?"
My father walked forward, placing his hands firmly on the back of the heavy leather chair at the head of the table, looking down at Arthur with pure disdain.
"You are speaking to my daughter, Arthur," my father announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "And you are standing in the building that I built, running the company that I gifted to your family. I think it’s time we discuss who really owns this empire."
Across the room, Julian’s head snapped up. His dark eyes locked onto mine, wide with an absolute, breathless shock as the truth finally exploded into the open.
Arthur stood frozen at the head of the table, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The absolute silence in the boardroom was suffocating as the weight of my father's words crashed down on every director present.
"Your... your daughter?" Arthur managed to choke out, his eyes darting frantically from my father to me. The smug, untouchable facade he had worn for years was completely gone.
"My only daughter," my father corrected coldly, stepping up to the table. "The daughter you called a 'nobody.' The daughter you threatened to blacklist from this industry. The daughter whose career you tried to destroy because you thought she was an easy target."
Julian stood up slowly from his seat, his gaze locked entirely on me. The heavy, hopeless shadow that had been over his face for days seemed to fracture, replaced by a mixture of profound shock and a sudden, burning spark of realization. He took a step toward me, but stopped, respecting the boundary of the room.
"Mr. Sterling," Sophia’s father spoke up, his voice tense as he tried to assess the damage. "We were under the impression that this merger was a private agreement between Kingston Industries and our tech group. We didn't know your family had a personal stake."
"My family is the stake," my father replied, leaning forward and placing his hands flat on the mahogany table. "Arthur, you seem to have forgotten the fine print of the original trust agreement from twenty years ago. The voting shares of Kingston Industries were granted to you on the condition of absolute corporate and ethical stability. Under Clause 14, if the majority owner—which is my family's holding company—deems your leadership a liability to the brand's legacy, we have the right to revoke your executive control effective immediately."
Arthur's face turned completely white. "You... you can't do that. The merger is finalized. The marriage contracts are signed."
"A marriage contract signed under duress and extortion is legally voidable, Arthur," I spoke up, stepping forward. My voice was calm, clear, and carried the weight of someone who finally held all the cards. "And as for the merger data? The compliance override patch I coded last night belongs to me personally, not to Kingston Industries. If I pull that patch right now, your entire international valuation collapses, and your partner's tech group walks away."
Sophia looked at her father, her expression turning to panic as she realized her family's empire was suddenly tied to a sinking ship.
Arthur sank back into his leather chair, looking smaller than I had ever seen him. He looked up at my father, his voice trembling. "What do you want?"
My father looked down at him, then turned his gaze to me, giving me a nod. The stage was mine. The push and pull was finally over, and it was time to dictate the final terms.
I stood tall, looking directly at Arthur, my voice echoing with absolute clarity. "I am only doing this for Julian. Whatever he wants, that is what happens next."
The entire room turned toward Julian. The heavy, defeated look he had carried for days was completely gone, replaced by a fierce, unshakable resolve. He stepped out from behind the desk, walking past his father without a second glance, and stood right by my side.
He looked directly at Arthur, his voice steady and resolute. "Dad, I don't love Sophia. It's Maya I love. So I would like you to cancel everything about the marriage we just did."
Sophia’s father immediately stood up, his face red with anger. "This is an outrage! The paperwork is signed!"
"A contract built on extortion is no contract at all," my father intervened, his powerful voice cutting through the room. "The legal team is already outside. The annulment papers for Julian and Sophia are being processed as we speak, and the voting shares of this company are being transferred today."
Arthur looked down at the table, completely defeated, realizing that his grip on the empire—and his son—had shattered completely.
Julian turned to me, his dark eyes filled with an emotion he no longer had to hide. The push and pull that had kept us apart for so long was finally over. He reached out, his hand wrapping firmly around mine in front of the entire boardroom, signaling a brand new beginning.
