Chapter 4

1992 Words
Several hours later, we eventually came to a stop. I'm ready to get out of this cattle trailer. The nerve of vampires to think it's acceptable to transport humans like this. The door to the trailer rolls up, and I notice that it's now dark outside. Well, that's just perfect, I scold inside my head. Like it isn't creepy enough as it is. Walking around in the dark with vampire's is just what I want to be doing right now. “Girls. Girls. Hurry it up. We have many things to get done, and we have to get to bed before sunrise.” headmistress snapped her fingers together. “We have much to go over before my students arrive tomorrow night. Follow me.” The four of us follow behind the Headmistress. It's foggy and hard to see. She is leading us towards the woods, and all I can see is half of the trees cloaked in fog. Yeah, I was right. This is creepy. “Is there another road to the school headmistress?” Asked Karly, sounding frightened. “No, silly girl. Why would we take another course? I guess your lessons start now,”the headmistress sighed before continuing. “The school has been here for thousands of years. Much before we came out to you humans, we had our children going to school. We were not as uncivilized as you all thought. This school is carefully hidden and so thoroughly guarded that no human has ever stumbled upon it. The fog helps scare your kind away, I suppose. So no, to answer your question, we will not be leading a different way. We do not have a different way. Even the students roam through this ancient forest to get to the academy.” The Headmistress kept her stride, her long legs causing the four of us to practically speed walk to keep up with her. Vampires don't have super acceleration like we have seen in the movies, but that doesn't mean they still are not faster than us humans because they are. The explanation about the forest didn't seem to help with the uneasiness that the other girls were feeling. Karly would shriek every few minutes because she thought she saw someone standing in the fog. “It's just a tree,” I whispered for the fifth time. The Headmistress didn't comfort her, but I guess she wouldn't bother. To vampire's we are the bottom of the food chain, their food chain. We are nothing to them but juice bags. Part of me wishes humans had agreed to give blood to live in peace with the monsters. I know it sounded horrific and sadistic, but look at what that war brought us. Enslavement. My family was one that didn't want to cooperate either, but now, thinking back on how my parents died, I wish they did. The Vampire's that first appeared on the news were kind. Soft-spoken and tried explaining that they were tired of hiding and wished to live among us freely. All we humans had to do was welcome them with open arms, and we would have been able to live in peace. The prideful men, the groups who started the revolution, are the ones that were not okay with becoming blood bags for leaches. It felt like close to an hour until I took my first step out of that haunting forest, and when I did, I was shocked. It wasn't just a building hiding behind the forest. It was an honest to God castle. It's huge. My eyes roamed around, taking everything in. It is a sight to see. Candles hung across the darkened stone walls along the walkway heading towards the school. Dark-colored flowers covered the ground, heading up to the castle steps. The castle itself was gloomy grey stone. No windows could be seen, and I guess that was for the safety of the students going here. Vampires cannot go into the sun. It damages their body. They will not die right away, but it will severally burn them, and they will need blood to repair their body before the healing process could begin. I counted five towers standing high and proud above the school, each connected to a different area of the castle. It was like I was back in time. This castle must be, like the Headmistress said, thousands of years old. “Alright girls. First things first, we will head to the orientation hall. I will go over the school rules as well as what your duties will be as blood pets. You will also learn a few lessons in our history. The kind that wasn't taught to you in those simpler schools,” she hummed while shaking her head. “They call those places schools. I'd be ashamed. They do not instruct what they need, just about jobs and what's expected of you according to your role. They should teach about our history. That way, you are all prepared once you get picked by your master.” Once she finished her little rant, we followed her inside the school. As soon as we walked through those huge wooden double doors, my eyes scanned the walls. Pictures of the previous teachers and a few students hung on the walls along the hallway. I didn't have time to read them all, but they all had names under the pictures. They are all smirking and grinning in their pictures, wearing black and red suits. “The pictures you see on the walls are of our past professors and a selected few of our past senior classes. The high-ranking families always get to be shown on our blocks once they graduate. This year, the prince and the Lord have that right at the end of the year. It is the proudest moment of their youth.” headmistress informed us before adding, “Come along pets” We followed her through the long hallway until she stopped in front of a door. She opened it and motioned us through. “Take your seats, and we will get started. We have much to go over.” We all did as we were told and took our places. I had expected the other girls who were taken to become pets for the academy to be here waiting for the class to begin, but I guess they already had their orientation. “Now let's go over a little about the school first. Once you are selected by your new master, you will stay in the room with them. It will be up to your master on how you sleep in that chamber. I am told some will bring cages and others will bring dog beds,” she smiled like she was so proud of her students. Dog beds? Are they bringing dog beds? I hope the master I get is one that is bringing a cage. I do not wish to sleep on a dog bed like an animal. Just because we're slaves now doesn't mean we should be treated like brainless animals wagging our tails, waiting for our owners to show us attention. “All students sleep in the towers. We have five of them,” she continued while I ranted inside my head, trying to keep my facial expression blank. “Now the rules. You will attend lunch when it is your master's time. You will only eat what he or she allows you to eat. You will not roam around the school freely. You are only granted out of your master's suit unless he or she permits it. You will attend classes with your master if he or she wishes it. You will give them your blood when they demand it. If you do not, the first time you protest, I will lock you in our dungeons. If you reject a second time, we will take away your food and if you keep refusing, you are going to wish you didn't because your master may punish you anyway he or she may be fitting for your crime. Do you understand?" she asked softly, as if her saying us being punished for not wanting to be blood bags isn't a big deal. “Yes Headmistress,” we all whispered. “Excellent now we do things differently here at Vampire Academy. We do not attend classes during the day. Instead, you will be sleeping. School hours start at nine pm and do not end until three am. You will all need to get adjusted to those times that are required in your duties. It is also a security precaution that you do not leave your room without your master. We can't control your safety. Some students are still young and still have a hard time controlling their thirst for blood. If your master sends you out the suit for any reason, you will need to be mindful of your surroundings. They may or may have not gone over the abilities that us vampires possess at those simpler schools. I will go over them just in case. We are indeed faster than you humans. Those silly movies about us overexaggerated our speed. We can control minds once we are older. Some students here that come from old bloodlines may already execute that ability. We encourage them not to because they are still young and have not learned to understand how to use that power, but as I said, they are still young, so accidents happen. Garlic will not harm us, in fact, one of my favorite human dishes contains garlic. Sunlight will not kill us. We do not turn into ash or have special jewelry to keep us out of the sun. It is ridiculous how many times I have been asked that. The only way to kill a vampire is to drain us of all our blood and then cut off our head with a stake in the heart. Just in case one of you thought about trying, I advise against it. You will be dead much before we bleed out,” she snarled the last words, eyeing each of us. “If one of you thinks about harming one of my students, I will slaughter you. Do you all understand?” “Yes Headmistress,” we all mumbled. “We vampires also go through what we call the heating once every few months after we come of age seventeen. Your master will need to breed with a fellow vampire, and while they do that, you are to be present, ready to allow them to feed during that time," she explained. The what? I never learned about this. We have to watch those leaches have s*x and just stand there until they are ready to drink our blood? That is insane. I gathered that vampire mating could get a little dangerous, and for them to even allow humans around them during that time is uncalled-for. We could be killed. The Vampire could drink us dry. “Also, as you may or may not be aware of, we have mates. Once we become of age eighteen, the mating progress begins. We do not know who our mates will be. It's left up to fate, but once we see them, it's like our world turns upside down, and all we see, smell, and hear is them until the mating is complete. Mating is until death. Vampires do not get divorced like you silly humans. The male vampire is protective and possessive about his mate and will go into a deep rage when their mate is harmed or threatened. If you come across a mated pair while here, I'd advise you to keep your distance.” “Yes Headmistress,” we whispered. She is right about one thing, the schools they send us to when we are young do not go over the things that they should. I didn't know half of the things she just explained to us.
