THE FIRST RIPPLE

Chapter 4: The First Ripple The morning sun filtered softly through the window. Adrian sat at his desk, eyes fixed on his laptop screen. Numbers. Trends. Patterns. Everything was moving exactly as he remembered. Too exactly. That was the problem. In his past life, this small investment had grown steadily over time. It was safe. Predictable. But now— It suddenly wasn’t. Adrian frowned. “This shouldn’t be happening…” The numbers had shifted overnight. A deal he was certain would succeed… had taken an unexpected turn. Loss. Not massive—but enough to disrupt his plan. Adrian leaned back in his chair, his expression darkening slightly. “The butterfly effect…” he muttered. Changing even one small decision had already started affecting the future. And this was just the beginning. He closed his laptop slowly. Panic wasn’t an option. If anything, this only proved one thing— He couldn’t rely completely on his past memories anymore. “I’ll just have to adapt,” Adrian said calmly. His eyes sharpened. After all… Experience was still on his side. Later that afternoon, Adrian stepped out to clear his mind. The city felt different now. Or maybe— He was the one who had changed. As he walked past a familiar street, his steps slowed. There she was again. Elena Rivers. Standing near a small café, holding a cup of coffee, her gaze drifting absentmindedly toward the street. Adrian hesitated. Coincidence? Or something else? For a moment, he considered walking away. Getting involved with people… Was risky. But before he could decide— She noticed him. “Oh—Adrian?” she called out, slightly surprised. He paused, then walked over. “Elena.” She smiled, that same simple, genuine smile. “I didn’t expect to see you again so soon.” “Neither did I,” Adrian replied. And that was the truth. They stood there for a moment, an awkward silence settling in. Then Elena tilted her head slightly. “You look like you have a lot on your mind.” Adrian raised an eyebrow. “Is it that obvious?” “A little,” she said with a soft laugh. “You were frowning from all the way over there.” Adrian let out a quiet breath. “I guess I wasn’t paying attention.” She studied him for a second, then lifted her coffee slightly. “Want to sit for a bit? You look like you could use a break.” Adrian hesitated. In his past life, he would’ve refused. Too busy. Too focused. Too closed off. But now— Things were different. “…Alright,” he said. They sat at a small table outside the café. For a while, neither of them spoke. Surprisingly— It wasn’t uncomfortable. “So,” Elena began, “what do you do?” Adrian paused. That question… wasn’t easy to answer anymore. “I’m… starting something,” he said. “A business?” “Something like that.” She nodded, as if that was enough. No pressure. No probing. Just acceptance. Adrian found that… strange. And refreshing. After a moment, Elena spoke again. “Whatever it is, I think you’ll do well.” Adrian glanced at her. “You don’t even know what it is.” She smiled. “Maybe. But you don’t seem like someone who gives up easily.” Adrian froze slightly. In another life… He did give up. On people. On himself. On everything that mattered. But she didn’t know that. “…Maybe you’re right,” he said quietly. As the conversation continued, Adrian felt something shift. It wasn’t dramatic. Not overwhelming. Just— Peaceful. A feeling he hadn’t experienced in a long time. No lies. No hidden intentions. Just a simple moment. But peace… Never lasted long. As Adrian stood to leave, his phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen. Unknown number. For some reason— A strange sense of unease crept into his chest. He answered. “Hello?” There was a brief silence. Then— “Adrian… it’s been a while.” Adrian’s expression instantly turned cold. That voice. He would never forget it. Ryan Carter.
